Grand Theft Auto 4 became tedious after the 3rd area was unlocked.

Gear of War 3 - my saves were corrupted after 10+ playing hours so I quit.

Skyrim - got pretty far with 2 characters but the story didn't motivate me to finish it

Borderlands - very repetitive

NV Lonesome Road - crashes every 5min :P

I actually consider Fallout NV a "finished" game even though I only did one complete play through and didn't purchase any DLCs. Just didn't grab me like FO3.

I was just looking at the various games I have that I've never finished or even started. I tend to get stuck in a rut playing something like Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3 or WoW for months/years and let these other games gather dust. I'll install them, try the tutorial and then go back to my old standbys. Some of them I get through the first 10-15 hours and then just stop (fully intending to go back to them, but never do). Do any of you guys have that problem? I'm always impressed by threads here asking what games people currently play and they read off a list of a half dozen.
Why don't you play more linear games?

I only ever buy a new game if the game I already own have started to become repetitive and/or boring. This way I always have 1 game I focus on.

Yes, I have -some- games unfinished, such as morrowind and of course MMO's since you can't really beat MMO's. However, I'm not planning to ever finish morrowind, not other games I've left unfinished, so it doesn't really bother me :P

I haven't been able to get into FONV. I feel bad, because I enjoyed FO3 so much, but... dunno. The setting, etc., maybe I just need to be in the mood for it and haven't been. I really do enjoy fantasy settings.

I have a growing backlog myself. But I am slowly getting to them 1 game at a time. The only bad thing is all these game sales, I am never going to get to the end of my backlog if I keep buying games. Buy how can you beat a $5 game?

With all the Steam sales I get new games more often than I finish them. It doesn't help that I like to replay a bunch of my favourite games too.

Steam sales and Humble Indie Bundles are pretty much the source of all the games that I have bought that I haven't got around to finishing- usually because they were so cheap on sale I don't mind leaving them untouched, or because I never was bothered about playing a particular game to begin with. Difficulty is another common factor though, especially if I'm having problems with tedious boss fights or similar set pieces, where I'm suddenly forced to do something that the rest of the game doesn't expect me to be able to do.

Games that I still have to finish at the moment include (but aren't limited to):

Aquaria - Not knowing where to go or what to do put me off once, but knowing what to do and still not being able to do it (i.e boss fight strategies) after multiple attempts has badly tried my patience.
SpaceChem - The learning curve is far, far, far too steep...and I'm bored.
Penumbra: Overture - I hate sudden-death mechanics.
Gish - I honestly can't see what everyone likes about it.
Grid - It's much harder than I was expecting- I barely even made it through the tutorial/qualifier! I guess I should go back to arcade-style racers...

I've noticed some of my earliest games aren't finished G.R.A.W 1 & 2 for example.
Newest ones aren't getting finished before I buy another new one.
I've not finished Skyrim, Duke Nukem Forever, FFXIII-2, Mass Effect 3, RE:ORC - noted the latter 2 have just been purchased, ME3 is 24+ hours in and RE:ORC is still in its wrapper.

Do any of you guys have that problem? I'm always impressed by threads here asking what games people currently play and they read off a list of a half dozen. Here's my wall of shame:

Morrowind GOTY (I know, pathetic - made it about 15 hours and stopped).
Lord of the Rings Online - have a lifetime subscription and never made it past level 32.
Gothic 3 - Never made it out of the area immediately around the starting village
Divinity 2: The Dragon Knight Saga - have never downloaded it after buying it. Supposed to be greatly improved over Ego Draconis (which I only played for about 20 hours)
The Witcher Enhanced Edition - I hear its great put I never got beyond the first little village
Sacred and Sacred 2 - Made it about ten levels or so with each.
Titan Quest and its expansion - I hear this is great, but only played a few hours.
Two Worlds II - played about 40 hours, but then Skyrim came out and now I'm scratching my head trying to remember the story.

I'm always looking at new PC hardware upgrades, but I could keep myself busy for a couple of years with these old games that run easily on my current system. /sigh. How the heck can I get motivated to get my money's worth out of them?
If those games are what you enjoy playing, I think that's fine, keep playing them. But if you feel you're stuck in a rut, make yourself put those games away and keep trying others. It's nice to break away from what you're used to and have a new gaming experience. I do have the same problem though. So many games, so little time. I get maybe 5-10 hours a week for playing games and of course I spend it all playing Skyrim. I'll take my own advice. Since I have Uncharted 3 and haven't played it yet, I'll put it in next time I get a chance to game.

I have a games collection of around 200 games the majority of which were bought pre 2005 ,since then i hardly buy any games these days. I have only ever completed a couple of games , the majority were too boring to keep me entertained or some that i liked were too difficult to finish. 2005 was the 'Eureka' year for me when i realised that i found that i preferred long term relationships with games that i loved, which i found to be far more rewarding than a string of one night stands with attractive games where the chemistry simply wasn't right. So i tend to research games as best i can ,watch trailers , youtube , reviews ,read player comments , try demos etc.in the hope of finding a game with enough content to keep me entertained for years. 2005 was the year i bought Morrowind and a couple of years later i started playing WOW , between those two i haven't felt much need or desire to bother with anything else. i have tried a couple of other games since ,but i haven't found them compelling enough to stick with for long, possibly because most games tend to be a rehash of old ideas that i have played to death already so don't find them interesting.

that sound like what i had. i don't know who said it, but someone said we always have time for things we put first. whatever the game is your 'priority'(usually the most liked one), that will get the lion's share of you play time. make these small games your priority. if that's hard, try the "if... then..." accountability principle: if you don't play the 'small' game for X amount of time, then you should not allow yourself, no matter the excuse, to play the 'fav' game for X amount of time or until you give the 'small' game some good play time. or what the stipulation you lay out, as long as the "if... then..." principle is used.

if the "if... then..." principle is not working, then maybe get rid of those games. you don't like or want them enough to play them equally with other games, even when applying the tested and proven "if... then..." principle. so get rid of them games. be the mom that pulls the child out of the candy store or makes the child choose just one kind of candy. and who knows, maybe someone else is looking for a copy of the game that you don't play but still keep.

I feel that same exact way, sometimes it's an OCD style issue because I hate having them there not being played..but if I play and beat them I won't play them again so they'll just collect dust anyways.

Game list is fairly large.

Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2. I won't play the former again probably, just not into it. The latter I've played maybe 5 hours and I like it but I haven't played it in over 2 months.
Forza 3/4. 4 I might actually get around to "beating." 3 I probably won't ever play again and never beat it.
Kingdoms of Amalur. I'm actually trying to play this one but it's only like once or twice a week at most and this past week I haven't even played it. I'm about 15 hours in though.
TDU 2. I have quite a bit of time on this, 20 hours or so...but I have quite a bit more to do and haven't touched it in 4+ months.
Dungeon Siege 3. About 8 hours of play time...and like every game I'm gonna list from now on, haven't played in 5+ months.
Tiger Woods 12. Usually I get through a full season of golf before I give up the game..this one I didn't like as much so I haven't even done that yet.
Two Worlds 2. I beat Two Worlds cause I rented it. This one I bought..stupidly and played 6-8 hours maybe and haven't touched it in over 9 months. In fact I think I played it a total of 3 times after I bought it when it came out.
Mass Effect. I beat two, I want to get 3..but I want to beat 1 as well. But for the 10+ months it's been sitting there on my shelf not touched. Played it maybe 2 times since I bought it.
Star Ocean 4. Played it 2 times, have maybe 6 hours in it and it's like a 60 hour game.
Dark Souls. Played it maybe 3 times since it came out, but it has like 10 hours in it at least. Fun game but not enough to keep me entranced.
Viking. Fun game, probably have about 8 hours to play before I beat it, but haven't gotten around to it.
Rise of the Argonaut- Decent game, have maybe 4-5 hours in it since I bought it. Rented it and had about 10 hours in it but my save got deleted.
Sacred 2- I've put 60 hours in this game, I really enjoy it but I am still quite far from beating it and I drop it for like 10 months at a time.
Assassins Creed 1/2. I've played 1 quite a bit...5 or 6 hours into it. If not more, 2 however..I've had just as long (about a year) and have yet to touch the game which is why I want to beat #1. But at this rate, it'll never happen

And now I'm tired of listing, there's at least 15 more games on there that I have yet to beat or have multiple difficulties to beat. Ninja Gaiden 2, DMC 4.

The games I dedicate the most time to are games that I've "beaten" Rock Band and CoD. LOTRO here and there...but I want to play it much more than I do..right now it's like once or twice a week. Same with Skyrim.

Oh and Battlefield 3, I've had it since release and have yet to even play the single player..and have maybe 15 hours in MP. With GW 2 and Diablo 3 coming out, my future gaming doesn't look hopeful for those games.

Couple of years ago I use to rarely ever finish a game, once I got a 360 I got obsessed with unlocking achievements this really added a lot of useless time spent doing stuff on games I didn't even like. Now that I'm around 20,000 gamer score I don't do that as often and usually only get 5-8 hours total out of playing a game before I beat it and throw it into the never use again pile.
