My cat likes to sleep ontop my PC >.<

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 1:18 pm

I need some advice, my cat likes to sleep ontop my PC tower.

It wasn't a huge problem with my old build, because there wasn't a fan on the top of the case.
But my current build uses a Cooler Master HAF X, which I use the two top big fans as exhaust.

I've tried moving it, but I can't block the top because its the only exhaust point. I've tried buying him a bed, that doesn't work. I tried locking him in my bedroom at night, but he makes so much noise I can't sleep. No matter where I put it, he always ends up sleeping there. Guess he likes the warm air coming out of it.

My sister suggested spraying him with water until he learns not to do it, but I don't want to risk some of the water getting into the case.

The meshing above the fan is clogged with cat hair and it is a pain in the but to get out every time I've used my rig.

Anyone have any idea of anything that can help.

Place a warmer cable modem nearby to lay on.

My only advice is that you cover the top of your case whenever you aren't around. My cat sits on top of my PC, which has a mesh top panel, and one night last year I came home from work to a PC that wouldn't turn on. Death by cat puke.

I've never had to explain why RMA'd hardware smelled strange before. EVGA was a lot nicer about the situation than Gigabyte.

If you can, put some random objects on top of your PC so the cat won't want to (or be able to) jump on it. To keep my cat off the refrigerator, I put some picture frames, small candles, etc. on top and it worked.

Step 1. Shave cat
Step 2. Baste Cat
Step 3. Allow cat to sit on PC for 2 hours, turning every 30 minutes.
Step 4. Enjoy your delicious, well cooked dinner. :)

You could always hot glue some nails to the top of the case.

Or simply put something uncomfortable to lay on on top of the case and make sure the cat can't move it.Maybe keys or something.

Do you know the plastic rugs with the little spikes on the bottom to keep them in place on carpet? If not, I'll google one for you - but cats HATE those things. If you were to cut one up and put it on top of the case (leaving your exhaust open so around that) with the spikes UP, the cat will stop.

Or double sided tape. Which is less painful for the cat, but works the same. (This also works on furniture the cat likes to destroy with claws.)

Edit: Those plastic spike rugs work on keeping dogs off furniture too - just in case anyone needs to know that.

I beg to differ, you just have to know the proper training techniques. They don't respond well to spanking, that just makes them dislike you, and they will continue to do it when your not around. You have to redirect them to something else that is similar or even better. If they find the new place satisfying they will use that instead. That is what I love about cats they are so independent, they generally do what they want, they have free will and are smart enough to use it.

This will sound weird but if you can get a banana or natural banana air freshener that may work. Cats dislike Bananas, I am being serious let your cat sniff one sometime they will wince and run away.

Buy a heated cat pad and start taking your cat off of your computer and putting it on the pad when you catch it up there. You could also use the above ideas to discourage the cat from getting off of the computer but there's no reason to deny it the warmth it wants.

Here's an example:

Oooh that sounds interesting. I love the smell of bananas. Have any ideas were to get something like that? My local store doesn't have anything like that. (I have a fire phobia, so candles are out of the question)

I've tried putting things like books on there, but he always seems to knock them off. Its not a big deal when I'm using it, but more so when I'm not around.

Pieces of packing tape (sticky side out loops). It's how I train my cats to stay off furniture. After a bit I don't need the tape anymore, they just stay off, even when I'm not in the room. eg, they jump up, get tape/feel sticky on their paws, freak out, jump off. A few/several experiences of that they associate with "ick." Works like a charm....well, with most cats. Plus you wouldn't have to totally block the fan area. However, make sure your case is heavy enough/stable, cause they'll rock it a bit.

And no, it doesn't hurt the cat.

But yeah, something with soft rubber spikes (not hard, totally unbending ones) laid on top of the object works too (like some car floor mats), but that'd be more for when your PC is off, since it'd block the fan vent.

Never had air freshner's or fruit peels work long term. Once the smell wears off (and it does rather quickly, especially on a warm surface), they just come right back.

Bear in mind this isn't iron clad though. Another smell cats are reported to dislike is orange and citrus. But my little buggers love it. :(

Won't a mat block the air flow even worse than the cat ? Perhaps you can fasten some sort of a grid around the top of your PC so the cat can't access it. Weave something like this around the top of it and fasten it in a way so that you can remove it if needed.

Punch some holes into sandpaper, and put it on top of it, or other rough materials.

Cats hate the smell of oranges, so leave some orange peels on top of the PC. Success guaranteed :goodjob:

Pfft that best be some good dang BBQ sauce that adheres well to the kitty or it'll muck up the computer.

My cat always hangs around near the fan of my laptop, for some reason. When she goes there I just push her away just enough to get her away from the fan and let the air out. Sometimes she is content with not being in direct contact with the laptop, sometimes I must remove her from the table.

I say build some kind of barrier to prevent the cat from jumping on your PC. I don't know how you have arranged the room in question but I'm sure you find a way.

I had something similar to this happen to me, except with my dog. She jumped on top of my printer regularly, and eventually broke it. I'd suggest making it inaccessible somehow.

If your computer is in a small room, then I'd suggest getting a http://i01.i.aliimg.com/photo/v0/10245893/Collapsible_Baby_Gate.jpg to block the doorway to the room. But make sure if you buy one, you get one that's sturdy, because your cat will most likely scratch and bite at the gate to make a hole to gain entry, so getting one that is wooden or thick plastic would be ideal to ensure it doesn't break in any way.
