Catching butterflies

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 10:13 am

I've been completely flabbergasted recently. I used to be able to catch butterflies and they would be placed into a jar for me to put on display in my house. Now when i catch them, i only get two wings for alchemical ingredients. What stupid thing am i doing wrong/forgetting?

A net?

I just find butterflies/bees in jars around the place and steal them. Mind you, I got rid of the bee quick smart. Just buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz all the time. Enough to make a person kill Lydia, which coincidentally happened.

We are all just little baby serial killers plucking the wings off the butterflies. :P

The ones in jars were only in older games... Doesn't happen in Skyrim that I've ever seen...

there are indeed butterflies in jars in skyrim. i have no idea where i found them though. catching butterflies in the wild will give you two wings (alchemical ingredients). the butterflies in jars are looted out of containers (at least that's where i found mine). check the uesp for locations maybe?

There is a jar with a live butterfly in it at the alchemist shack. Google it for location if you don't know where it is. It even respawns so you could in theory have a whole shelf of butterflies going on.... if Skyrim's houses weren't possessed by exorcist ghosts that toss all your stuff all over the place.

The only thing I've ever gotten when I clicked on a butterfly was wings. The jars can be found scattered all over the game, though.

Maybe i'm crazy then, but i could have sworn i used to be able to capture butterflies and put them into jars with my first character. There are plenty of them laying around though.

Unless you mistook the butterfly for a butterfly in a jar..

There are Butterflies , Bees , Dragon flys and and such stuff in jars. But you can't catch them and put them into a jar  I think they are some fun stuff like the snow globes in New Vegas.

I only found the http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b74/Desert-Rat/Skyrim/MeowSkyrim55.jpg so far :(

I wish I could put some of those small fish in a small fishtank also. Some of them are pretty colorful.

Catching them for ingrediants is an awsome aspect of the game, one that doesnt get much mention.

I have only seen a couple of them in Jars, one was on a Thieves Guild mission & the other was a random chance upon an old shack.

It's funny. I did not know that I could catch a butterfly in this game. Then, one time I am picking a flower and I get some wings. That made me curious. Now, I have to use the Slow Time spell to catch the darn things.

There was a YouTube hoax (?) involving some ritual that you needed each type of bug/jar to pull off. Didn't see if it was verified or not.

Hehe, at first they are hard to catch, becasue i thought they were reacting to my presence. In a way i guess they are, but i find that they quickly nestle on a nearby plant or object. Similar with Hawks, they can nestle up on high tree branches.

Trying to catch them in 1st person can make me dizzy :yuck: I have tried 3rd person & seems to help.

Definitely wait for them to land. Do not try to jump up and catch them in the air, flinging yourself off the edge of a bridge in the process. In front of a bunch of guards.

I do what I did in Oblivion. I run while spamming the "use" key and moving my mouse frantically in all directions. I love the sound it makes when you successfully "pick" stuff. "CLICK, CLICK, CLICK" Its so much fun.

There are a number of theories regarding the bugs in jars. Have a look in the cheats etc section - there's an interesting thread on it.

There are 5 different insects to be found in Skyrim (in jars), all in different locations in the world :)
