[REQ] Cold Weather and Hypothermia

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 1:39 pm

This is Skyrim, it's cold out there. There is no reason for people to be running around with nothing to stay warm with let alone half naked like some of these characters.

I would like for someone to add in Hypothermia to the game. Take into account weather, location, what the person is wearing, if you are feeling ambitious if the person is wet.

For later versions, adding long fur cloaks to the game and giving one to basically all of the NPC's that they equip when cold would be nice, and useful for the player too.

And just for cosmetic reasons, adding sleeves and pants to some of these armors would be great because a steel plate strapped directly to your bare flesh in the middle of a blizzard is a recipe for frostbite.

Mechanics of Frostbite? Probably constant stamina damage until your are out of stamina, then it shifts over to health damage.

This would be cool. As it stands, armour is divided into such strict tiers (steel is always better than iron, orcish is better than steel in every way and so on), that something like this would give you a reason to perhaps wear fur armour at other times than just the first 5 levels. A "warmth" stat on every armour piece, maybe.

Do you want to play an RPG or manage a sim?

IMHO, a terrible idea. But eh, its a mod idea so whatever.

I've noticed that for example Leather armour leaves a lot of skin uncovered. Unless you're a Nord, I don't think this is very wise. Could at least do with a model change.

Were I proposing, food water, and sleep requirements this might be a valid argument, but in an environment like Skyrim the elements are as much or more of an enemy than anything you will fight with out blade. That and the role play opportunities are priceless. Get caught in a sudden Blizzard, need to get out of the cold before you die, you shelter in a cave and suddenly find yourself in the middle of a whole new unplanned adventure.

This sentence right here describes what I feel is missing in both Oblivion and Skyrim.

I think something like this was done for Oblivion/Fallout a while back, shouldn't be impossible to do it in Skyrim aswell.

Ever notice how ghost stories start with "It was a dark and stormy night."?

There are plenty of stories that start with the search for shelter in a sudden blizzard too.

Honestly it would have to be combined with a Hydration, Nourishment and probably Sensory Integrity mod and the mod author(s) would need to research Cold Weather survival a bit to do effectively and who knows it might actually be education and helpful to those that end up visiting areas with Cold(er) Weather patterns.

If I can survive 2 hours in Artic conditions in PT[physical training] shorts and shirt (-30 Celsius degrees below freezing with about another -15 to -20 degrees for Wind chill due to Artic Winds) without permanent damage (30 minutes recovery time in a heated environment) then I don't consider that it that far fetched or unbelievably hard.

{granted I'm experienced and conditioned for it and for some weird reason can't seem to get:
  • Frostbite [body tissue freezing/crystalising]
Just:
  • Hypothermia [general biological functioning impaired due to body temperature being outside of acceptable range of temperature - chemical processes aren't working right etc.]
  • Pneumonia [dealing with extreme cold weakens/ties up your immune system - standard respitory infection]
  • Trench foot [infection - infected tissue turn into slush basically/ chemically breaks down]
  • Snow blindness [your eye lenses/pupil get stiff/sluggish in responsiveness, impairing your ability to focus/see]
- I have literally have had clothes Freeze solid on me where I needed help to break the Iced clothing to move}.

While I'm not a big fan of it, a lot of people enjoy realistic food/sleep/hydration mods. hardcoe mode on New Vegas was fairly popular as well. I see no problem with it, although I probably won't use it myself.

I agree with the above entirely, it would be good to have a full immersion climate etc mod. Those who want to use it can do so, those who dont, dont have to, well as long as the dark brotherhood of mods that a specific mod that a specific person doesnt want to use, dont get into their homes at night, change the computer passwords and force the game to load the mod in a very cruel fashion.

Cant see that happening though.

What I'm proposing right now is just a light mod, to cover those that don't want to go in depth and simply to get the ball rolling on this. Later expansions could easily cover all of the realism aspects of cold weather survival. For now though simple cold can kill is enough.

YES I would have liked the same Beth to do this , may be just in certain regions of perennal cold , and allow you to wear over coat garments that adds over the armours ....

Echonite...You sound as if you have become a jaded member of this community...why so negative man...Someday you'll have a mod idea that you think is great, and I sincerely hope people are nicer to you than you've been to them.

I have to agree with both of you here. Unplanned adventures are the best, and they are few and far between in both {the game that shall not be named} and Skyrim.

In any event I can't wait for the creation kit because I have a few mod ideas of my own.

Happy Modding man.

I like this... slowly loosing stamina if not properly dressed, indoor or near campfire.

This should be race "sensetive" also... as Nords are more accustomed to cold weather, and Kajit even have fur... whilst argonians are reptilian and should suffer more from it.

Certainly, I would expect things like cold resistance and weakness to be factored in. Some balance between the races would need to be considered though, Argonians easily freezing to death does nothing but detract from them, so they probably need something to compensate.

What's funny is I half expected to be hurt when I jumped in water for the first time since it had chunks of ice floating in it.

I was way up north and before swimming across a wide river full of ice I thought, "I'm going to die before I get half way across this."

It was just a reaction to the perceived level of cold, but it would have been cool to struggle to get across it before I died.

Being in water/wet doesn't kill you faster (you freeze slower in water than out of it due to the current preventing the water and you from freezing). Though you'll typically die faster because being it cools you off/disperses your body heat and impairs your bodies ability to generate and retain heat which is your primary defense against cold (even when outfitted for cold weather). Most Cold weather outfits will incorporate some degree of water resistance/proofing for that exact reason. Its generally considered a death sentence to fall into water/get soaked in artic conditions unless a very effective heated shelter is nearby and even that would be uncertain due to all the ailments you'd get while recovering from it (flu, pneumonia, etc.).

I'm actually aware of this, it is simply that I have an perception in my mind of how it works, and cold weather survival is something that I need to consciously think about. Realistically, were I to die from trying to swim across that river I mentioned it would be because I seriously cramped up and was unable to continue swimming resulting in me drowning.

That said I can say from experience that the shock of being hit by freezing water can be enough to make breathing extremely difficult to the point of requiring substantial conscious effort to breath if you can't get out of the water.

So... my current character has +25%+50% innate frost resistance (before equipping frost resistant gear or using any such potions -- if these resistances add, that means I am 75% resistant to frost damage), and also has the ability to spout flames from both hands, flames which are easily hot enough to roast a chicken.

Do you think a hypothermia mod would be realistic enough to take these factors into account?

I'd play this as long as it was done right, ie, not a constant issue but an extra environmental danger for the coldest areas where there are snowstorms like the peak of High Hrothgar.

The drain should be quite slow, IMO, just to add to the ambience of the place and discourage sprinting.

Any cold resistance should probably negate it completely.
