Does anyone care?

I still think the real travesty of that game is
not that it's an FPS XCom, but more so the abject failure that was 2K's planning on this whole thing. I don't know who could have thought that it would be a good idea for them to announce that game before the reveal of Enemy Unknown; much less with such a big time gap as that. It's not like they couldn't have foreseen what the fan reaction was going to be, after all.
As well, it's my understanding that - even though it's within the same IP, they are being developed as two games independent of each other (ie, they're not even taking place within the same "universe," so to speak.) Even considering both games are being done by two different studios, there's no reason they couldn't have been working more closely together in terms of planning and connecting the two games (from various interviews, it's not like the two teams haven't been in contact with each other.)
Now that Enemy Unknown is on the way, the FPS just seems... irrelevant to me. (And with the news that it's being pushed back once again, I can only imagine that they're going to be attempting to reformulate the game, again; and that they're probably well aware of the game's critical reception - never good before the game's even out yet.)
Here's a scenario I feel would have been much more ideal (and of course with the caveat that I know next to nothing about the internal workings of the game industry; and even less about the flow of events that lead towards either of these games.)
XCom: Enemy Unknown is announced. Fans are generally cautiously optimistic. (There's been a lot of negative response to... well, essentially any change that's been made, or any aspect that's in any way divergent from the original game. But that's to be expected. I can't speak for all X-Com fans, but even if I had more misgivings about the game - which I don't - I'd probably still be willing to give this game the benefit of the doubt.
Now that fans know a traditional XCom reimagining is taking shape, the announcement of an XCom FPS tie-in would be at least a little bit more acceptable. Personally, I think the idea of a potential "origin story," could hold some promise. And a more narrative-based, investigative focus to the game could easily lend itself well to a more action-oriented FPS game. (My understanding is that this FPS was never intended as a "nothing but shootin' stuff" game. These are the guys who made Bioshock after all - even if not the same studio, necessarily. This point has been largely ignored, but previews hinted that there would be a fair amount of tension, investigation, etc - and not simply a different take on an FPS Area 51.)
There's just been so many revisions to the FPS at this point, I think the project is unfortunately doomed before it even had a chance. I could have been interested in a different take on the franchise. So long as it tied into the turn-based game in an interesting way, I wouldn't have even needed all the crap they've tried to slap onto the game to try and cater to the fanbase (ie, all the tactical overlay stuff they added recently seems unnecessary for the game they actually wanted to make, and seems more of a last-ditch attempt to say "no, see? It really is an X-Com game!")
I just can't wrap my head around what they were thinking at 2K. Because I think it could have had a chance if the games were revealed in reverse order.
