X-Com

I heard the game just got a release date for October.

Curious about what other people think about the upcoming game.

I was interested in it but I heard they're going to have one of those pre-order bonus' elite soldier pack or something. This sort of decreased my interest in getting it at all.
I never know if games do this because they could be doing that to try to sell more copies when it first comes out, or if they do it because the game is so bad they need a hook to sell it at all.

Yea I just saw that too, I'll likley get it as it sounds pretty promising.I never played any of the older games but it sounds liek they are doing thier best to keep it true to form while modernizing it a bit.

The spcial edition also sounds like a steal, $60 for all that stuff?

I'm definitely interested in the game, not sure if I'm "pre-order"-certain about buying it though.

Pre-order bonuses never really sway me into buying early, it's more the question of how badly I'd want the game and how much I trust the developer to create a good (and relatively bug-free) product. If they really want my preorder for this game, they will have to release some sort of demo.

EDIT: Oooh, special edition? now that does interest me (I which all games came with their soundtracks).

RockPaperShotgun has been doing a lot of coverage of this game, and it's sounding very good.

X-Com is literally my all-time favorite game series. I came to videogames as a tabletop gamer. Back in the day, it looked to a lot of us as if it was a given that we'd start seeing a lot of our favorite tabletop games translated into videogame form. (I'm still waiting for my Car Wars videogame...) X-Com was always very much what I would look for in a videogame - something that brought the best of my tabletop preferences to the table, but which could only be done on a computer (destructible environments, bullet tracking, etc. Not to mention the geoscape, intercepting UFOs, etc.)

As an X-Com fan, it's been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster for me this year. I remember when it was first announced that Bethesda was making a Fallout game (probably my second favorite series,) I used to say "well, at least they're not making X-Com into an FPS." And of course, it turned out that 2K was going to be doing exactly that. :)

I wasn't particularly angry about news of an X-Com FPS, but I very much had my doubts as to what exactly that game would have, for me, as an X-Com fan. Looked like a good game, just didn't look like anything that had anything to do with what I'd want as a fan of the series. (ie, good - but largely irrelevant.)

So when I found out that Firaxis had also been working on a more traditional translation, I was overjoyed, to say the least. I still think it was very unfortunate timing that they didn't reveal the turn-based game prior to talking about the FPS. Because the latter would have been a lot easier to swallow had I known about the former.

Anyway, I think the new XCom: Enemy Unknown looks just amazing. I haven't been this excited about a game release in quite some time. I have a lot of faith in Firaxis (who make Civilization these days - another series I've been playing since 1991,) to really do this game justice. And they don't seem afraid to make the game their way, which I tend to respect more. I know some of my fellow fans have some misgivings about some of the changes, but I happen to trust they'll all be for the better (or at least won't take away from the core thrust of the game.)

As far as pre-order bonuses go: Well, they had me at "Firaxis is making a traditional X-Com game," so I don't really care about that too much. I do think it has a lot to do with trying to drive up day one sales. Pretty much everyone does it these days. I highly doubt anyone is going to be swayed into buying a crap game just because of pre-order bonus - I do believe it might help sway people who were on the fence about buying it early, though.

So in short? I'm over the moon about this announcement. The RPS interviews all look very promising to me. At this point I just can't wait to get my hands on it.

I really like the original X-COM game, and hope this one come close to it. Still can't decide if I should pre-order the game or not though :P

I'll hold out to see what the reception is like. Apocalypse is my all-time favourite game, but I don't really see this one having many similarities. It may well turn out to be a decent game, but I know it'll probably feel like a let down in comparison to Apoc.

This is going to be my first X-Com game, closest I have come to playing an older one is that free downloadable UFO Alien Invasion.

Anyways is there some kind of backstory to these games or is it just aliens have come to Earth now fight them.

It looks good, I haven't played any of the older ones though. Then again I do play table top games so I have some experience with how they work.

It says I have to be in the US, so at any rate I can't get them.

Edit
I just realized how much I hate Amazon. It's always got some sort of clause or exception for people outside of the states. Meaning I can't really fall in love with it like other people do. It's got to be one of the last places I'll ever look on earth because of their god awful services. At least I've never had any good experiences with it.

The Steam versions are configured poorly anyway, and have some files cut out for no reason. Steam + DOSBox games = not a good purchase.

Anywhere else I could get them?

Wait, really? What files? I'd think if the game were missing some things it wouldn't run properly...

That's quite a delay. "Indefinitely" would've been better, though. [censored] shouldn't be made on purpose.

What? An actual funded developer is making a game that isn't based on first-person akshun!?!? Has their marketing staff been replaced by variety-loving pod people?!?

Strange things happening in these recent times. It's 2012, though, so maybe it's the end of the world as we know it happening right here and now...

MT-32 music files. It wouldn't affect most users, but it's a feature I can't use since I have it on Steam.

I still think the real travesty of that game is not that it's an FPS XCom, but more so the abject failure that was 2K's planning on this whole thing. I don't know who could have thought that it would be a good idea for them to announce that game before the reveal of Enemy Unknown; much less with such a big time gap as that. It's not like they couldn't have foreseen what the fan reaction was going to be, after all.

As well, it's my understanding that - even though it's within the same IP, they are being developed as two games independent of each other (ie, they're not even taking place within the same "universe," so to speak.) Even considering both games are being done by two different studios, there's no reason they couldn't have been working more closely together in terms of planning and connecting the two games (from various interviews, it's not like the two teams haven't been in contact with each other.)

Now that Enemy Unknown is on the way, the FPS just seems... irrelevant to me. (And with the news that it's being pushed back once again, I can only imagine that they're going to be attempting to reformulate the game, again; and that they're probably well aware of the game's critical reception - never good before the game's even out yet.)

Here's a scenario I feel would have been much more ideal (and of course with the caveat that I know next to nothing about the internal workings of the game industry; and even less about the flow of events that lead towards either of these games.)

XCom: Enemy Unknown is announced. Fans are generally cautiously optimistic. (There's been a lot of negative response to... well, essentially any change that's been made, or any aspect that's in any way divergent from the original game. But that's to be expected. I can't speak for all X-Com fans, but even if I had more misgivings about the game - which I don't - I'd probably still be willing to give this game the benefit of the doubt.

Now that fans know a traditional XCom reimagining is taking shape, the announcement of an XCom FPS tie-in would be at least a little bit more acceptable. Personally, I think the idea of a potential "origin story," could hold some promise. And a more narrative-based, investigative focus to the game could easily lend itself well to a more action-oriented FPS game. (My understanding is that this FPS was never intended as a "nothing but shootin' stuff" game. These are the guys who made Bioshock after all - even if not the same studio, necessarily. This point has been largely ignored, but previews hinted that there would be a fair amount of tension, investigation, etc - and not simply a different take on an FPS Area 51.)

There's just been so many revisions to the FPS at this point, I think the project is unfortunately doomed before it even had a chance. I could have been interested in a different take on the franchise. So long as it tied into the turn-based game in an interesting way, I wouldn't have even needed all the crap they've tried to slap onto the game to try and cater to the fanbase (ie, all the tactical overlay stuff they added recently seems unnecessary for the game they actually wanted to make, and seems more of a last-ditch attempt to say "no, see? It really is an X-Com game!")

I just can't wrap my head around what they were thinking at 2K. Because I think it could have had a chance if the games were revealed in reverse order.
