companions are useless now

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2016 7:53 pm

I do sort of agree that they are useless now. But that is only because I grew very tired of all the male companions blocking my view when I shoot and blocking my direction when I walk. At least with Ada she only gets in the way half of the time. Plus I love her flamethrower arm that burns Raiders and lights up the darkness at night. :goodjob:

I never chose my companions based solely on combat ability before, and I'm not going to start now. I've already traveled with my regular companions since playing Automatron. I'm more interested in the robots for keeping at settlements than I am in using them as companions. I'll still travel with my robots sometimes, but I'm definitely not feeling like they've made all the other companions useless. For my sniper build character robots aren't all that useful. Quite the opposite actually.

Wasteland Workshop should allow us to customize our companions in the same way that Robot Curie and Codsworth can be customized. Imagine Dogmeat with an Assaultron Head Laser and Robobrain treads or Preston with a Bleep voice.

My charisma based character will switch back to using Fait once he's done with the Automatron DLC. With the perk that improves companions damage and defense as well as giving Cait the Spray and Pray sub machine gun she is a beast. Plus with all the caps that character earns from his water farm buying ammo for Cait is not a problem. I've probably got 8,000 rounds now as well as over 300,000 caps to buy more.

Honestly, companions really need infinity ammo, grenades, and other stuffs with most weapons now due to Automatron... That's literally why I really don't use most companions in the first place. I hate supplying them with ammo.

This. The point of companions is still the same as it's always been. Use them if you like their company. No fancy junkbot can ever replace Hancock for me lol.

I've been having MAJOR problems with robot companion behavior, in a middle of a fight my melee robots will just stand still while they're being shot, and when I tell them to attack sometimes they don't even respond and just stand there. It really svcks sometimes they fight some times they dont, I think it's some bug with the robot heads and 'engagement' distance. It's really dumb I'll have my robot attack an enemy but she won't react if their to far way even if they're getting shot. Any one else? I don't have any mods that edit enemy combat behavior either.

that isn't always true I had Ada with me fighting a hostile level 46 Assaultron and despite being focused on her she immediately used the head beam on me when I made distance to heal myself. They still target you regardless

What's a problem with companions spending ammo anyways? It isn't like it is so "rare" I actually find it more fun that you have to give them ammo and weapons to use. Not because I'm all about immersive gameplay but it sounds just right.

Companions often get in the way, attack enemies when your trying to sneak up on them, or sneak past them. Useful to carry stuff though.

Robots carry more, but I've heard Ada apologise for her noise.

If you playing a stealth, sniper character, leave them somewhere.

I mean right? I dunno about more fun, but hell, I'm sittin on over 5000 rounds of 5.56. I hand my companion a nice powerful Assault Rifle and a thousand rounds and we're off to the races. I'm all about the robots right now, but ammo is the least of worries where traditional companions are concerned.

Especially if you love the NPC companion that much, why would mere slightly better stats be more important to you than that?

(The number of times I've taken worse stats in a game, just because I liked how a particular piece of armor looked, or a particular pet, or whatever.....)

Yeah. the robot AI is pretty bad.. especially if they are equipped with multiple armaments.

Also they do have bug getting stuck in engagement mode.

I find it best just give them one type of weapon and let them do whatever they want.

Giving one Gatling laser arm is better than giving one Gatling laser and one Minigun....

..... and this is any different than before because of Automatron? You go through them one by one, get their perks, send them away, perk-up yourself with Lone Wanderer and never to have to shoot anybody in the back in every doorway in every building again.

'Bot pack mules are just a bonus.

Well for destroying stuff, yeah I agree with the OP. But not why I play really. I made Ada as OP as possible while I needed her to do the DLC quests, but as soon as that was finished I went back with human companions (playing a BoS character). I did help Curie out but my character still considers her more of a tool (and occasional six toy) than a person.

Ok, I swear I'm not being sarcastic and there's no ill-will attached to this, but are you sure they aren't simply disabled from being damaged? I'm not assuming that you don't know that your robots can take damage and be incapacitated, but seriously, without actually seeing what you're experiencing, that's exactly what that sounds like. I had ADA getting her tail whipped for a good 2-3 hours last night, and I always knew when she went down because all hostiles immediately aggro'd in on me.

^^^This^^^ is absolutely the truth, and even though the companions jumping in front of you in combat has always been an issue, I've found that it seems to be even MORE so with ADA (for me anyways). Even when I'm sneaking, ADA just jumps right into battle and kinda ruins the element of surprise.

I am guess you do not in any way or form take part in RP when you game? I do not choose my companion for their stats but rather for enjoying their companionship as I travel.

I usual use "human" companions when I need the friendship buff when I turn in quests. Let them stay in Cambridge police station when I go to Institute and get mine xp. After I fastravel to downtown with companion to earn a little more xp before the chems stop working. If I sleep in a bed I get friendship buff again and take a few chems to increase xp if there are enough hostile left in Boston. That way I earn +1 / +1.5 level. I found out that travel alone is the best.

Cheers,
