My computer survived!

Post » Fri Sep 21, 2012 11:59 am

Soooo, Antibody and I were playing Portal 2 Saturday morning and I had a nice glass of water sitting on my computer desk. When we started playing, I casually informed Antibody that my girlfriend's cat was able to jump from the bed to the arm of my chair and liked to sit in my lap while I was at the computer. About 30 minutes into our playing, the cat decided it wanted attention and jumped over. No problem...until I moved my arm in a weird way and knocked a glass of water onto my computer case...

LUCKILY! It only landed on the front half, where the vent and fan aren't. If anything happened, I fried my front audio ports, but I don't use them anyway, so no big deal. I took apart my computer, used a hair dryer to get some of the water out of the nooks and crannies, then set it on the back porch during the 90 degree day to air dry. Put it back together later and turned it on yesterday and everything booted up perfectly.

Maaaaaaan, I'm lucky. I am instituting two rules:

1) No open containers near the computer desk.
2) No cats in room during game time.

Any of you guys/gals have any close encounters like that?

Yes.... I used to have my Lian Li tower on my desk. One day the plastic pen I used to keep my desk level was snapped in half and the tower came rolling down, luckily I was on my computer at the time and caught it before it crashed onto the floor.

my old laptop had issues. http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i365/mirglof/DSCN0028.jpg

there was some kind of defect with the conductive silver they used for the keys, and some of the keys would spazz out and not stop typing themselves in while some would not work at all. The only way to make them stop was to forcefuly stab the problem keys with a screw driver.

other wise i just used a usb keyboard.

I almost murdered my poor laptop with tea a couple of times.
Poor EDEN has to put up with all sorts of stuff from me. Including the cat cuddling up to his exhaust ports and rolling around on the keyboard (she shut off my touchpad that way once, and it took me three months to figure out how to turn it back on).
And just recently I damaged his monitor by cleaning it off with Windex. Apparently, some leaked into the seam between screen and laptop backing, and now about a third of it's gone flickery. It looks like I'm viewing the screen through cheesecloth.

And yet, he keeps chugging along. He's such a good computer. *pats*

Yes I anthropomorphize inanimate objects don't judge me ?_?

Nope every time my pets got around one of my gamming units they've knocked it down, luckly they don't do that any more.

My main rule is to never have an open container of any liquid (Or solid, really) on the left side of my desk, which is right above the computer. In fact, I have a small TV Dinner tray type of table on my right specifically for food items/clutter.

No fatal accidents yet, but I have spilled a drink or two on my keyboard. It's such a pain to clean those things...

If, at any point, I spill something sticky on my keyboard, I may as well go out and buy a new one. This old factory Dell keyboard has served its purpose, I think.

I destroyed my PC three years ago knocking over a cup of water on it. Went right down the fan hole on the top lid and fried the motherboard.

I've destroyed two laptops within about three months of each other by knocking over large glasses of water. They were both completely fried.

I've never had a close encounter like that when it comes to computers. The place I have my computer is far away from a place where I could spill something on it, so it's safe no matter what would happen to the keyboard and/or monitor.

I think I once sprayed water over my monitor while reading this forum. I don't remember what thread it was, but it was a good one.

Sticky keyboards are quite a nuisance, yeah. :ermm:

I have never had a terrible accident with any electronics really (knocks on wood). The only thing that comes to mind is intentional things that I did that turned out poorly. I flashed a beta UEFI BIOS on my motherboard the other night and Windows thinks I have a http://i.imgur.com/PVTeX.jpg

Oddly enough, I was quite drunk the previous night.

2) No cats in room during game time.
But without the open containers they're harmless!

In other news, I once received a significant shock up my left arm while I was at my computer during a lightning storm. I'm probably lucky it missed my heart.

Just don't forget to punctuate your mourning with spontaneous wails of grief. Otherwise you're just wasting time.

When she's sleeping, yeah. But when she's in my lap, she makes my arms go all wild and crazy to accommodate her.

I know, well CPU-Z picks up on my correct speed. Its odd because in order to have a 7.9 in the WEI you need to have a 5.6Ghz processor or higher.
