Judging by Sony's recent acquisition of Gaikai, I'd say it's possible Sony may offer a Netflix-like subscription model service, where you pay perhaps $10-20 / month and have free access to play any PS4 game you like, streamed from some sort of cloud server.

1983. Some blame the horrible Atari port of Pac Man, others blame E.T., most blame both and the horrible practices that the industry had at the time. Might have stayed dead if Nintendo hadn't revived it with the NES.
I blame the little inserts you had to slip into the Intellivision controllers if you wanted to know which button to press. I think they were designed to get lost. :P

Those were a terrible idea anyway. The Odyssey's http://i45.tinypic.com/sfi041.jpg are where it's at. So many gaming possibilities!

Why exactly are they against used games? Don't they still get profits off them?
no, and neither should they.

lets put it this way; i buy a toaster, use it for 3 years and then sell it in a garage sale. the toaster is the "game" and the garage is the "used game store"

How its always been is that when i buy the toaster, it belongs to me and i can do what ever i want with it, such as sell it to a neighbor.

In recent times toaster manufacturerers are trying to come up with ways to prevent their profits from coming to a plateau

(because when that happens to a corporation, its stock holders begin to sell their stocks in large quantities with the assumption that those stocks are at their most valuable point)

conventional ways to increase profits is by raising the margin of profit, which is to say charge a larger % of money for the same product, but that causes a decline in sales. Also they can't increase a % based profit by producing and selling larger quantities of copies because in the eyes stock value the margin will not increase.

So they look for ways to get "add on" sales. An example of an add on in regards of the gaming industry is DLC, however generally DLC still requires production so they can only increase their margin of profit by either charging A level price for D level Production, or by with holding content that was already going to be in the game and selling it immediately after release as day one DLC.

Now the most recent "add on" is their attempt to either promote some sort of "developer's tax" on used game sales (hence getting paid twice for selling one physical copy), or simply by killing the used game market completely. Which would raise their margins by destroying and consuming a whole sub market, forcing used game consumers to pay full price for a game they ultimately did not think was a high enough quality game to pay full price for.

They justify this by saying that used games cause them to loose a sale, but thats nonsense, since the game that is being bought used was bought by the previous owner.

so essentially the toaster manufacturers want to show up to my garage sale and demand a cut of my profits i made selling my toaster to my neighbor.

They want to make it more like a movie ticket. Sure, you can sell it, but they're not letting anyone into the movie with an already-torn ticket. :P

People will still buy it and pay for t. There may be a few boycotters, but the majority will still do it.

thats a good way of putting.

my response would then be; charge me movie ticket prices for "leased" games

As a side note Used games aren't legally able to be sold in Japan. Government enforced anti-used games.

This is patently untrue. Amazon Japan has a page devoted to how to sell used games to them and there are 8 used copies of Oblivion GOTY for PS3 available this very moment for sale. If you don't care for Amazon, you can go to www.kaitoriouji.jp or www.dvd-cd-kaitori.com, or www.yamatoku.jp/gamekaitori/ or ...

Well i suppose that gets rid of disc space limitations...

Not that that is an even trade for never being able to let a friend borrow a game...

Not in actual stores though. I'm not sure, online may not be effected by the rules.

My son and I frequent no less than five game shops in the central Hamamatsu area to buy and sell used games.
Go to Akihabara in Tokyo and you can find thousands of used games for all platforms for sale in dozens of stores.
I realize that Japan has more than its fair share of crazy rules and regulations, but prohibiting the sale of used games is not one of them.

I must be confused then.

The last Japanese person that I talked to must have really been lying to me.

Wait... the Wii U is a console... and I'm pretty sure http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31YsmLXFzdL._SL500_AA300_.jpg will take discs.

Therefore Nintendo saves the day again. Maybe since this is supposed to move away from the Wii a bit more companies like EA and Activision will pay attention to Nintendo. Then if those two did others would surely follow, like Bethesda.

Used games are really the only reason I still play on console. If I can't buy/sell used games anymore, I might as well just switch to PC. I'll just spend the same amount I'd spend on a new PS4 to get a fairly good gaming PC.

And it seems that the WiiU is already getting a lot of bigger name titles like Assassins Creed III, some Battlefield game, Grand Theft Auto V, and possibly Metro Last Light.

And the tablet thing isn't necessary.

And the Wii U also apparently has the hardware capabilities of an Xbox 360.

So yeah, not buying that.

Actually the only thing about hardware compared to the 360 that has been confirmed is the clockspeeds, and that doesn't really mean anything. Anything about processors and what not is not actually confirmed.

And.. and I forgot what else I was gonna say.

Not what I was going to say ^ there, but graphics shouldn't dictate whether a game is bad or not.

Edit: I remembered what I was going to say, one of the actual devs from nintendo said that they way they spend there money on hardware is different than Sony and Microsoft to cut costs down on the console, and that the hardware they are using is relatively new so it hasn't been worked on as long as Microsoft and Sony's, so it's potential has not been reached. http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/06/13/iwata-on-wii-us-relative-hardware-power

And these people http://www.equities.com/news/news-headline-story?dt=2012-07-10&val=257557&d=1&cat=headline think it will run for less than 249 Euros.

Sounds like a great console to me. If I wasn't an avid PC gamer I would buy it because I am used to not being able to buy used games. If you want developers and publishers to continue making the games you like, then you will have to pony up for a new copy because the developers and publishers do not get anything from used sales.
