Hearthfire looks good.. yea I'll buy it, but it seems lazy. We should have been given an expansion that allowed us to become a Jarl and build a city. There are so many small holds and tiny towns already ripe for the picking, rebuild, add to.. start from scratch... etc I'm a little disappointed....

Think about that.

Dohakiin has done more for Skyrim than any of the Jarls. I think it should be well within his right to take over someones seat as Jarl.

I am looking forward to this, but was really hoping it would have to do with seasons and holidays. Of course, both would be nice.

Technically at the end of the game either the jarl of solitude or windhelm is taken out of power so you could very well take over one of those seats.

For a timed exclusive (and considering Todd saying no more small DLC's) it is pretty lacklustre. I wonder how this and the dawnguard random encounters are going to get along.

Not like it's Skyrim's last dlc. Plus. It's 5 bucks.

This isn't true, actually.
Spoiler

Elisif surrenders if you side with the Stormcloaks, but she isn't displaced as Jarl. Ulfirc remains Jarl of Windhelm until the moot is called (which doesn't happen until I suppose a DLC or the next game).

I don't remember him saying this. In fact I think he said there would be small DLCs to fill in the gaps between large ones.

Yeah i suppose, I'm just saying if they wanted to have that option in the game they could very well do it.

Its DLC for the price of a cup of coffee in town and your complaining because its not a huge quest line. Dawnguard hasnt been out for long the next big DLC will be a while yet in the mean time you get to play at building your own house for pennys thats hardly lazy.

"For Fallout 3 we did five DLCs. That was a very aggressive path for us. Our plan now is to take more time, to have more meat on them [for Skyrim]. They’ll feel closer to an expansion pack. With Fallout 3, it was, ‘Ten dollars is the sweet spot for us and we know we want to put out five of them. And we had overlapping teams. We were coming off Fallout 3 and right back in. We just think we can do better content if we approach it a different way."

The Small DLC's that you were on about, were to be free to tide us between larger DLC's (aka the free stuff we've been getting in patches)

The amount of coding to be able to make/runa town/hold/city/village would be insane..what i am hoping badly for...is that they carry this on...add new features i hope they make a tycoon side to skyrim,be able to rent out your houses etc,and hire guards to protect your houses and add new land to buy,a new way to earn money.

It's five dollars.

Think about that.

Precisely. It could have been so much more. It would have COST so much more.

The people who are complaining about Hearthfire are doing so because they either don't understand its purpose (to deepen the immersiveness of the role-playing aspect of the game), or because it's not something they wanted.

No, you can't become jarl or build your own city. But you can build a home, an estate, and a family. And I, for one, am overjoyed at the news and eager to download it.

Agreed. Would I want more? Sure(seasonal foliage and holidays comes to mind. Dream come true) But I'm content with what were getting with Hearthfire.

To be fair, that quote doesn't actually say they wouldn't put out small add-on DLC, only that they want to focus on making DLC that feels more like full expansions, it doesn't actually preclude the possibility of other DLC if they feel it is worthwhile. The free stuff we've been getting has been substantial, and for me is a great sign that Bethesda truly want to support the game and the fans after the games release, not just going for the money, however, they haven't really been significant gameplay and content additions, just some new stuff to expand on what is already available. Not to take anything away from it, the stuff has been great, but it's not hard content that could really be given a value, this is, and to me, it really is worth it, and in truth, something I was hoping they would do, adding good new hard content in little add-on packs in between full DLC releases.

Of course the worth of a thing is down to the individual and I could totally understand why someone wouldn't think ti was worth it. Whilst I would love to see something like the idea the OP suggested (as I've said in another thread, I love the idea of a settlement being built in the same way), this house add-on clearly adds a lot of gameplay and is worth, to me, the very small price.

Make Helgen into its own little hold by snipping some land from here and there (come on, the potential High King/Queen could figure out a way to justify this).
*Bam* You're a Jarl, rebuild the town and get settlers.

I love this idea a lot, but yeah, it would have involve a lot of work. It would be cool it it could be rolled into a plot-line/DLC. Maybe it's the reward for finishing the DLC. (Slowly building up the destroyed town while you work the quest, then becoming Jarl of it. I don't know.)

Could you explain that a bit more please? In what way do you want them to add on to each other? Are you talking about making them episodic content as in little pieces of one long story or chain of events? If you are, then you've got the wrong idea about Hearthfire, it's just a house building add-on, nothing else.

You really don't need to be a Jarl though, and being a Jarl wouldn't really be conducive to playing the game. Or should I say playing the game wouldn't really be conducive to being a Jarl? After all, you'd never really be there, you'd be busy being off wandering the province smiting thine enemies.

You could have this exact same scenario without ever being a Jarl, you could just be given the job by a Jarl somewhere to help a small camp of refugees set up a permanent home somwhere and it could grow into a sizeable new settlement over time.
