Crash on new game. Tech support does not return E-Mail

Post » Wed Dec 22, 2010 11:18 pm

I have two Windows 7 64 bit machines with Radeon graphics cards with the latest drivers and the latest version of the game.

Fallout New Vegas crashes on new game after the intro video 100% of the time on both of my machines.

Bethesda technical support refuses to reply to my E-Mail support inquiries, even with DxDiag provided.

I have been completely unable to play this game since the release date (I pre-ordered this game) and Bethesda will not even provide an apology or any form of technical support.

What options do I have of getting a response from Bethesda? Are there any organizations that I can report them to if they continue to be unwilling to provide support or a working product?

I think the e-mail support may mostly be for taking in complaints, not answering them. This forum is more what you want, so describe your problem in more detail and your fellow users may be able to help you out.

For some people doing the "verify game cache" option on Steam can clear up crash problems.

Sometimes a crash is related to a codec you have installed.

Bethesda seems to release most of its official responses in sticky'd threads, game patches, and the occasional forum post here.

Thanks for your reply. That seems like a messed up way to run a business, but will post more information later tonight.

I've dealt with their customer support 5 times now between Oblivion, Fallout, and Fallout New Vegas and have not had a satisfactory handling of an incident yet. They seriously need to fire whomever they're outsourcing to. If their games weren't so good when they actually work, I'd have given up all hope on them long ago. :vaultboy:

The game launches to the game menu properly. I hear menu audio and see things properly. I click new game, the intro video plays. I get shot, a roulette-style loading screen appears, then the game dies: The screen turns black, exits maximized mode, I get a message box stating that Fallout New Vegas has stopped working due to an access violation.

This persists after verifying the game cache. Also persists after reboot.

It doesn't seem like it'd be a Codec because the video plays just fine. It's just when the game engine starts up that the game crashes.

Here are my laptop's DxDiag results. I can provide one for my desktop as well, but I primarily want to have it working on the laptop.

Ypou do not have the most current ATI catalyst drivers. The drivers you have are from catalyst 10.9 the current release is 10.0 which was released about 22 days or so after your drivers were last updated.

That may not help though as the game requires a discrete graphics adapter- that is not what you have. You are using Radeon HD 3200 onboard graphics (R780 chipset). Dxdiag is also not correctly reporting its availible memory even considering it should be using some of your system memory. At most it may have 128 dedicated- some laptop makers would offer a 128 meg memory mudule upgrade at the time of sale that would give the 3200 dedicated memory of its own. Otherwise it has no dedicated memory despite what dxdiag is reporting.

The X1300, while slower in terms of throughput, has 256MB minimum of dedicated VRAM as opposed to somewhere between 0-128. I suspect this is the real reason behind your crashes. I don't think, any of the ATI or Nvidia onboard graphics solutions are supported for the game and the minimum requirement is a video card (discrete graphics adapter) at least as good as the X1300.

Go ahead and try the latest drivers though and also make sure your settings are all the way turned down. You may be able to get it to run if you tweak it because as far as onboard graphics goes ytou don't have bad onboard graphics but it will not be able to run very many games that are demanding on system resources. You will also notice that your chipset was not supported for fallout 3 either.

It's frustrating but AMD's numbering scheme for discrete and integrated graphics for the 1100 through 4200 series did not really help the consumer when trying to figure out whether they were getting a faster or slower card or a discrete card at all.

Radeon 1300XT tthrough Radeon 1900 are discrete graphics cards with anywhere between 256 and 512 MB dedicated VRAM on the card- not to be confused with the mobility series for laptops either.

Radeon HD 2350 through Radeon HD 2900 XT are also all discrete graphics cards with at least 256 MB of VRAM - except for some treason the Radeon HD 2400 Pro which can sometimes have 128 which is only half as much as the HD 2350 has.

For some reason ATI decided that they would insert, with the same naming scheme, a set of on board graphics chepsets at this point

Radeon HD 3000 through Radeon HD 3300 are ON-BOARD graphics chipsets that might have at most 128MB of relatively slow memory intended to primarily be used for frame buffering - if it was purchased as an upgrade at the time of sale. It isn't really slower than the the minimum required discrete card but it probably doesn't have enough actual dedicated VRAM to load the textures at the start of the game. That's why it's crashing I think.

Is that a tablet notebook?

Have you tried setting the graphics on low? Does it still crash then?

Have you tried making Steam verify the game cache?

Yep. This is a tablet notebook with multi-touch drivers. It does the same thing as my desktop which runs an MSI ATI Radeon 4850 512MB card.

Game still crashes on low.

Thanks for the detailed explanation on my graphics card. Yeah, it's definitely integrated. I'll have to look up discrete graphics adapters and learn a little more.

Will try out the 10.10 drivers. That's funny though, since I thought I just updated last week. Maybe I ran the wrong installer.

Oh. Odd tidbit: desktop PC could run Fallout 3 just fine when it was a Vista PC. Shortly after upgrading to Windows 7 Fallout 3 still functioned. After an automatic update, Fallout 3 ceased to function on that PC, so I know the machine is or was technically capable of running Fallout 3 (and likely FO:NV since the engine is going to be extremely similar).

I did see a heck of a page file there (5065MB used).
Also ffdshow codecs installed.
I've dealt with their customer support 5 times now between Oblivion, Fallout, and Fallout New Vegas

Hmmm... I see a pattern developing.
I have all those games (and more) and have never contacted tech support.
Perhaps there is something about the configuration of your machines that make playing these games difficult.
Fallout New Vegas crashes on new game after the intro video 100% of the time on both of my machines.

Uh-huh.
But it's not your computers, right? It's the game...
I dunno friend, maybe the new patch when it's released will help you.
I hope it does!
But there's something going on here - I'm just not exactly sure what.
I would like to see the DXDiag from your main (desktop) rig, freshly booted.
It might be a bit more up to the job than your laptop...
(It's a swell laptop, don't get me wrong.)
It's just that the game is very demanding.
Immediately after the intro and the roulette wheel (where you say you're crashing) is an animation, from the first-person view, of The Courier waking up.
Everything is foggy and slipping in/out of focus, and the room is spinning (he's dizzy).
So there are heavy video effects right there - the very first ones of the game...
I think there is something, something you are habitually doing or habitually installing, that is harming your rigs for these games.
You say you've had problems going back as far as Oblivion?
I think your rig maybe clogged and needs a clean, fresh Win7 install (not a Vista upgrade).
But, I know that's easier said than done!
Or maybe there is a product that you use (maybe for your job) that gets installed on all your computers, that these games don't like...?
Hey I'm just throwing these things out there (as possibilities), but you have gotta start thinking outside the box.
Like I said, there's a pattern developing...
But hopefully we can help.
So don't despair - and it's still early days, there will be patch(es) released. :)
But many people can play the game flawlessly with great performance and only minor issues...

Yep. This is over 3 machines. The first handled Oblivion on XP, then died on Vista. The second handled Oblivion and Fallout on Vista, but not on Win 7. The third (this notebook) never handled anything.

My main beef is that I paid money to these guys and their tech support department ignores incoming E-Mail, their customer service department ignores complaints about tech support, and I can't even attract attention via publicly complaining about their tech support in reviews and via twitter. It feels as if they think they have no obligation to support their product. I'm okay with a "We're working on this problem", "Can you tell me more about this?", 'Please run X and give me Y back", "We're not going to support this because [we're evil / hardware spec problem Z]", etc. But no response is just absurd. You don't do that as a company, and if it does happen, you fire or reprimand the tech support representative in question, but this does seem to be a pattern that's been in place with them.

Yes, I tend to murder my PCs. I'm a software developer and I love having lots of applications open at once. Yes, I expect there to be bugs (and with Bethesda I expect there to be LOTS of bugs), and yes, I believe this is something in my configuration disagreeing with something Fallout ate, but I expect the publisher to provide timely technical support (within reason) in exchange for my financial support.

If I feel the company is not meeting their obligations, I think it is my responsibility as a consumer to alert them of this. In the event that things are not rectified, I should be more vocal about their deficiencies, especially if I feel there is a pattern of this behavior with this organization.

Background: Bethesda refused to support Oblivion on Vista after the upgrade. Okay, I buy that, it's a huge change in OS. Bethesda refused to refund or provide compensation for DLC that did not work on Vista. Okay, that's a little shady, but you don't want to be inconvenienced and your label says you're not compatible with Vista, so okay. Bethesda refuses to support Fallout 3 on Windows 7. Okay, yeah, that's technically true that FO:3 wasn't developed against Win 7 but Win 7 is very similar to Vista and they're refusing to support things while their marketing department is gearing up for New Vegas and telling me that New Vegas will work fine on the PC. That's shady, but okay. Then they release the thing and it fails due to the same issues as I was experiencing and reporting 4 months ago. That's irritating, but Fallout New Vegas is supported on my specs, so they should at least try to support it, right? I mean, I've given them the benefit of the doubt after their previous handling of things.

Bethesda doesn't seem to see it that way. In my eyes, this is dangerously close to buying a roof, discovering it doesn't work as a roof, and then finding out that the company that sold you the roof won't return your phone calls. There are regulatory organizations and consumer organizations for that sort of thing. This is much less severe of a scenario (instead of paying $50 to play New Vegas, I paid $50 to play Tech Support Hero) since a faulty game (or deficient technical support) isn't going to wreck anything, but the principal is the same.

I may very well have incompatible hardware and I can accept that, but that is something that Bethesda should tell me themselves. I cannot see any excuse whatsoever for them to not even reply to multiple technical support queries.

Bethesda's games tend to be really good, really buggy, and supported by the worst technical support I've ever seen. It's that first part that keeps me coming back and makes me want to love the company, but it's really hard to do that when they don't seem to think they have any obligation to support their customers (including if the fault is on the customer's end).

You can continue to rant or try to solve your problem, which I have pointed out in the above quotes.

Yeah, I've been trying to solve the crash problem via updating my graphics driver, but at this point I'm more alarmed at Bethesda's failures as a company and that's the primary problem I'd like to solve. They surely can't be aware of how abysmal their support department is. I can't see their Public Relations department being okay with that.

So I attempt to solve both problems. :celebration:

Will reboot the thing later and try again. Doesn't seem to make too much of a difference, though whether or not it's a fresh boot or if I have umpteen apps open, which is why I didn't bother to reboot before getting the DxDiag.

Don't get me wrong, I'm appreciative of help (even edgy, hostile help), but Bethesda's actions as a company are very concerning to me and that feels like a greater problem than a crashing game.

Have you tried a clean boot?

I am not hostile, just tired of reading all this whining, in a section of the forum, where the idea is that the users help each other.

I am all for people giving the constructive feedback that Bethesda/Obsidian needs, as long as it is put somewhere useful (which, in my opinion, is definately not here).

Can understand the frustration, people just need to relax a bit - that's all.

Hi,
I have found that bethesda is very good for playable game ideas but has consistently under-tested their product and not tended to be forthcoming with effective patching. I believe that the short-term dollar is their motivator and not the longterm client loyalty. They are only going to make a low to maderate effort to resolve their buggy product if it continues to sell the way that it does. Of all the games I play Bethesda is the only one which you can count on for buggy programmng. The other games will have a few bugs but then be adequately patched.

Sadly you must rely on forums like this for client support rather than a comptent and ethical business foundation. That is the Bethesda market phylosophy and they appear to be making a decent living off of it.

Peter

Clean out your Startup folder! Turn anything/everything off! (Or better yet, prevent things from ever starting.)
Heck, I even disable Aero...
You need a clean, lean & mean PC to play, running nothing but clean Windows OS.

Due to issues on the PC with Bethesda games I'll probably only play their stuff on the 360 in the future. At least that way I expect graphics to stutter occasionally and typical console stuff.

The thing is as long as we keep buying beta products the PC game industry is going to keep on shipping them.

The problem with that is that a lot of the fun from their games comes from mods. Also, I understand that they seem to have migrated their bugs into the 360 this time around.

I'm convinced that PC is the way to go with Bethesda, but I'll never again pre-order anything from them and will make sure a demo runs on my PC first (though, not sure if they offer demos).

Plus - Buying a new 360 game entails giving Bethesda more money than I would when buying a PC game so I'm against that. I think buying from Best Buy or Amazon results in Bethesda getting less a share of the money as well (compared to Steam). But that's just the side of me that wants to boycott them wrestling with the side of me that loves their games.

See, that's the kind of statements that makes me tired, you make it sound as Bethesda (who have even not developed this game) are the worst game company out there, and I think that it is just not fair.

I don't know what kind of games other people play, but I can mention at least a dozen other games from other developers, that had just as many or even more bugs that FO:NV has at launch.

Good idea about Aero.

Yeah, I took the DxDiag while I had Minecraft and Visual Studio open. True story. :whistling:

I dispute the idea that one on one tech support is beyond expectations. Almost every game I play runs fine and of the ones that break enough that I'll contact tech support, one-on-one twitter or E-Mail support is the norm. You might have a waiting period, but it's there and I really respect those guys and their companies. Shout outs to 2k Games and Microsoft off the top of my head.

I have to agree, the tech support on these forums is pretty much non-existent. Expecting other gamers to help fix problems is a lousy route to go, especially since the problem is mostly with the game. Jumping through hoops to get one game going, when more advanced applications and intensive games work with no problem is baffling. Bethesda needs to take Blizzard as an example of good tech support. You get individual help on those forums. Compounding this is being ignored by tech support through email, which is horrible in that it effectively cuts off any sort of helpful communication between you and the company. I only see moderators, but they mostly lock threads:(

I think there is something you have misunderstood. Quoting from the FAQ: "Please note that these forums are not used for official technical support. Rather, we plan to use it to provide updated information and allow dialog between gamers to solve common problems, such as the most common problem of video or sound card drivers (or a lack of updated ones).

For technical and customer support, please call 410-568-3685, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm EST Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, visit support.gamesas.com or email support@gamesas.com. "

See it here: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1120441-please-read-before-posting/page__pid__16655835__st__0&#entry16655835

I know the issues about the tech support - just wanted to make clear that you should not expect "official" tech support in this forum.

Just did, actually. Long day. Yeah, the app continues to fail spectacularly. Aero off, fresh boot, everything killed. I'm amused that the game crashes just after you get shot in a cinematic. Irony is awesome.

I'm not looking for tech. support from Bethesda from here, was mostly looking for advice on how to get a response from them. I do appreciate the help the community is providing; it is unexpected and appreciated.

This is on your desktop right? Have you posted a dxdiag file for that one?

The particularly frustrating t hing about using a clean windows install as a solution to problems with this game is that your drivers are not nescessarily fully updated again through windows update. Also, some items like Visual C++ 2008 redistributable package are not updated automatically in many situations (along with directx for some odd reason.) I am assuming though that you did get the latest versions of directx and Visual C++ redistribuitable right after reinstallation though. If you post the dxdiag info for that computer I can try to see if there are instances of fixes need for any of the specific hardware components on there. For some specific graphics card models and even sometimes for the sound card models there can be errors and fixes unique to that hardware. It's annoying, I know.
