Whoops, for some reason I thought D2D was a term, not the actual service... heh...

So this begs the question.. STEAM OR D2D?!?! Essentially the same game that will unlock at the same time.

Your argument is now invalid.

I thought D2D just provided Steam keys, since it's a Steam exclusive game? Why would it offer its own pre-loading?

I would not recommend a D2D version that does not activate on Steam, because the way they encrypt the exe file prevents script extenders from working, so you'd be limited in the selection of mods you can use. But this shouldn't be the case here since it's Steam exclusive.

Does that mean everyone will be trying to download 1gb and the patch when the game is unlocked? Heh, how could that possibly go wrong.

D2D has an installation as far as I know. Steam downloads the files as they would be when installed, hence the size difference. Correct me if I'm wrong though, I've never used D2D.
Normally D2D has it's own encrypted version of games but this time they are selling a SteamWorks game.

How does that differ from any other release?

The fact it's one of the most anticipated and pre-ordered games of the year? And Steam hasn't been known for smooth releases. If the preload files indeed lack an executable, then why bother making it available only two days ealier? It's not like pirate versions can work without one.

Sorry if this has been covered in one of the myriad steam threads, but has anyone found a good way of watching when the steam preload becomes available? I mean apart from refreshing constantly heh

There is no such thing as a D2D version that does not activate on Steam. D2D gives you the same installed game that you will get from Steam. D2D also gives you an activation key, got mine in an email today.
