D2D has an installation as far as I know. Steam downloads the files as they would be when installed, hence the size difference. Correct me if I'm wrong though, I've never used D2D.

Because it's just a pre-load, not the full game.

Usually pre-loads are only a few MB's less than the full game, as the .exe file and such are left out.

I'm just going to assume it has something to do with Modern Warfare being released today and Steam is waiting for the peak load to subside...
Doesn't matter as long as my preload is done before the game is unlocked.

That is correct, Pre-Loads download the full game, minus the executable in an encrypted state. Upon unlocking, the executable is then downloaded and the files decrypted.

They don't want to waste their bandwith either, so the download is compressed, too.

It's just 6 GBs, guys. You can download that in a few hours, tops. I would be ok if pre-loading started Thursday afternoon.

I read somewhere that Oblivion and Fall Out 3 (i think) were allowed to be pre loaded 2 days before launch on Steam, so tomorrow should be our lucky day if they follow suit.

here's hoping that Steam doesn't encrypt the users manual as it would be a nice distraction for the remaining time before the game unlocks.

It's just 6 GBs, guys. You can download that in a few hours, tops. I would be ok if pre-loading started Thursday afternoon.

and what about people that have say around 100-200kb/s download speed, what about people that work up to or close to midnight? They are just supposed to deal with it and download while the rest of us play? Why don't u just not click pre-load till thursday night, that way everyone else can pre-load and have it on their HDD's while u wait...

I about to buy this off D2D and preload and just use Steam for decryption. I confirmed from D2D this will moddable.

Trust me, all you steam purchasers will be thankful I will be one less person competing for bandwidth on a 5 GB download.
