Dark Brotherhood Resurrection modder asking for $44 tho

Post » Tue Nov 13, 2012 10:55 pm

I'd just like to bring this to attention for people and my fellow modders, because jesus christ what the hell.
You know, I'm usually a guy who likes freedom, but asking for this much money for something you don't legally own is ridiculous.

I suspect the legality of such a thing is questionable at best.

Considering he would be pretty much directly profiting from its creation, I'd say "questionable" doesn't even come to mind ever.
And I'm sure all the lawyers would just love to hear "but I'm not actually SELLING it, so it's okay"

Wow, that doesn't seem right at all. What happened to modding the game for fun?

I miss the days when the word "kickstarting" made me think of motorcycles.

And doesn't this guy know that for this to work he has to be a woman complaining about sixism in society who gets insulted for what she has to say?

I would actually love if this got funded and Bethesda took all the money from it.

I would not because who in their right minds would fund $44 grand for a mod.

Enough that he's got over $600 so far. And judging by the incentives, one of those people donated $200 lol. Ugh.

It is kinda silly to say you will only do your mod if you get 44k in 30 days, that is kind of unrealistic.

I've seen webcomic authors ask donations in the range of $50-100 weekly, and the Nexus has the donations button, but $44 thousand up front? And as a requisite? That's unprecedented.

I "get" the notion of that amount, but I don't quite fathom it. To devote oneself entirely to the project? My creativity would stagnate, especially under the projected pressure of the thing...

And, I mean, wasn't Part 1 released only a few months or so ago? Why the hurry to get into the next one?

So... ask for donations to fund a frugal year's existence, to devote time to a product that... will be released for free?

And there's the matter that it could be a gigantic scam, but I'm more inclined to give the benefit of the doubt -- I assume his heart's in the right place even if his mind isn't.

I'd like to know who the hell contributes to ANY of these online beggars. You don't know these people, they could spend that money on a car if they want to, and you wouldn't be able to do crap about it, because you just handed the cash over, and trusted a total stranger.

It's one thing when someone runs a website, or a YouTube channel, and generates content whether people ever click on their "Donate through PayPal" button or not, it's quite another when they ask for money to generate ANY content whatsoever.

Not that we needed it to smell something fishy going on, but that's a big red flag right there. I'm thinking someone has a gambling debt to pay off or something.

I feel that it's not always bad. Look at Project Eternity.

comparing a professional project from a professional studio to an amateur project by one dude in his bedroom isn't really a great idea.

if this were Andoran or Enderal or something huge and crazy like that a Kickstarter would be much less shocking, but asking for this much money for something as comparatively tiny as this is both ridiculous and very likely in violation of the EULA.

Damn straight. If Obsidian Entertainment spent the $4 mil that people donated to them to buy Ferraris for all their employees, and not on a video game, I think that would have some repercussions down the line, in the form of having no freaking fans left. This jerk can vanish like a fart in the wind at any time.

I like the idea of people with great ideas being able to do something with them, and I feel Project Eternity probably falls under the category of "Might not normally get the money when going through investors who see Call of Duty sales and get a boner". But this n'wah most certainly does not. Imagine Trainwiz asking us for thousands of dollars to build Sotha Sil Expanded.

I could see it done for something like the Tamriel Rebuilt project... but this just adds a measily 10 hours of additional playtime. Dawnguard costs 5 bucks on steam, and it's twice as long as the projected timeline for this mod. Plus, there's no guarntee he just won't drop the project at some point in time.

Too late, I already have a copy that's complete enough to enjoy.

Hey, let's not give them any ideas, okay? It's taken them long enough to release three damn maps. :P

The precedent this would set is appalling. No matter how he's trying to spin this, it's a request for money in exchange for a mod.
