Something I'm so glad From Software did with the lore and story is keep it vague and mysterious...it completely adds to the aura of Dark Souls. The Lords are very Sauron-esk in their mystique, and its perfect. So much is left for anolysis and individual perception, and I couldnt see it any other way. One thing that adds to it is the pure difficulty...or not that...just legitimate challenge. When an antagonist of any sort is shown or discussed, they're respected, in my case. Usually in a game you tell yourself 'I'm going to kick that dudes butt', but in Dark Souls, you respect. Even in the opening sequence, when i saw the the Witch of Izalith, I took her very seriously with respect. Same with Gwyn and Nito. I'm like..."wow...main antagonists...holy crap if i fought you right now id die within one tenth of a second, completely and absolutely.
When I bought this game, I heard good things and obviously heard rumor of its difficulty. It's hard, but not unbeatable, and I've learned a lot about myself in my run sofar. I've died a lot, and gotten frustrated, but up until now the frustration is fair and I don't feel cheated, and its a sweet, tasty frustration. I've experienced some of my greatest thrills in gaming with this game, and its very, very well balanced, fair and kind in the frustration / rewards it gives. Along with not holding your hand (here's a lot of Souls to level up with for defeating this boss...go ahead and die twice and lose them forever if you want, but here they are) and just respect for gamer intelligence, and everything else, including hard cold robust statistics with superb action and sweet loot, and it borders on masterpiece. Truly imo. And the atmosphere!! It also blends authentic survival horror and horror in general.
I bought this game used for $20, and if From Software makes another, im buying brand new release day for $60
