I'm still waiting for the world to spontaneously combust from the last prediction made by an idiot who should be wearing a straight jacket; hugging himself.
So, no, I don't think it'll end and even if it does. Who cares. It's not like any one of us can do anything about it.
Just pick a spot, grab a cold one and watch as the world dies. That's my plan anyway.
It's not that the calendar ended, it's the fact that the calendar ended and the entire Mayan civilization vanished immediately after.
I think the most logical theory is that someone went back into time to erase the Mayans from existence to prevent the 2012 prophecy, but forgot to burn all traces to their calendar. They brought the Mayans to the year 14,512 AD, where they can never bother us again. THey're someone else's problem now.(or will be, in 12,500 years!)
Yeah I'm pretty worried about December 21st too, because all of the people who do believe the world is going to end are going to be committing suicide, rioting, or just generally wreaking havok and scaring people for no reason.
This. But are there honestly a significant number of people in the developed world that believe this? I have yet to encounter anybody who puts any weight into any Doomsday theory, this one included.
I hate to burst all you guy's bubbles. but the world will not end. Want to why? Because the world technically already did. The Mayan calendar did not account for leap years, so actually the world was supposed to end last December 21, in 2011. So right now we are living in a post-apocalyptic world. That world ending stuff isn't going to happen.

Leap years and daylight saving time are both modern inventions meant to accommodate our calendars. The Mayans used the stars to calculate their dates and was found to be only a few seconds (or whatever) off of our current day calendars. Which means they DID account for leap years and so on through the use of math and astronomy.

I have heard differently, but I do not look into the subject because I really don't care. You are probably right though.

What if whoever converted the Mayan calendar to the Gregorian calendar took leap years into account?
You didn't believe people took this seriously? There's a lot of people that do
Yeah, there's been several "the world's going to end!" scenarios in my lifetime that seem to be inspired by the most random of things such as the planets being in alignment, stuff like that, and some people do take it incredibly seriously. If I had a quid for every time the world was definitely going to end, I'd have several quid by now. I guess it's nothing new, though: it's one of those things that goes right back to when there were first words to express "we're all gonna die! Argh!"

I'm preparing my Black Soul Gems. When all those suicide cults are killing themselves, it'd be a shame for all those souls and their essence to go to waste. Think of all the souls I'll have. THE SOULS! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfUM5xHUY4M!
