Is decorating your house pointless?

Rosethorn is beautiful, though I must say the Cheydinhal house is my absolute favorite in Oblivion.
About the bookcases, I don't mind books falling, but I wish we could drag misc. items and place them on the shelves along with the books.

tbh, at this point I'm really liking the house in Bruma. Its very cozy and has lots of places for cool little decorations. Rosethorn is just the 'big ticket' house in OB so its like you gotta have that one.

You said just what I meant about the bookshelves. I used various stuff like skulls or vases in OB to act like bookends or just for decoration in the bookshelves but that seems gone now in skryim.

Yes it is pointless, except the weapon racks, manequins, book shelves etc.

I settled with the preset shelves (bookshelf-lookalike, but unusable) for clutter. And now I actually realized I haven't tried completely emptying them and putting my own stuff there. I'll try it as soon as I play a character that owns a house.

It's fun and makes you feel home, so yes. Though i noticed on my game that if i put things on shelves they will be on the ground when i load the cell.

I haven't had this problem while playing on my console, the things that I lay against the walls and what not stay put even if I'm gone for a long time ( I even have someone staying there and running the house and even then I haven't seen a difference). What I can't do is put weapons and shields on the walls of my house. I think in a way though decorating your house is kind of pointless. I mean no one is going to be seeing your house (unless you have a commentary series or things like that). Since nearly everyone who plays TES games is strongly opposed to Multiplayer no other player is going to see what you do with your house and if you can't show your house off to the community what's the point in investing time trying to make it look good?
I myself hardly ever spend enough time inside my house as it is. If however there were some way of having better decoration options I might be into putting more time into my house, but it's static so I don't really care about it. It's not like Fable where you can move rugs upgrade furniture and place paintings on trophys on the walls.

first i never had the problems you described and to answer your question it is a matter of vanity and a money sink ; what else can you use your money ; after spellbooks and smithing materials isn't much else to do with your money

It doesn't change the fact that decorating is broken and should be fixed.

I agree. I can't believe it hasn't been fixed by now.

Thanks.

To that point, which house is best for decorating? Breezehome in Whiterun only has one weapon stand and 2 book cases. I plan to just place my armor trophies on shelves. Really more of a showcase of uniques/artifacts and such. I'm collecting dragon claws, too.

Is there an item limit in a specific house/cell? I remember in FO3 decorating the house in Megaton, eventually it would crash or have missing textures every time I entered if I put too many items in there. It was looking cool as hell, too.

The house in Windhelm (Hjerim) is fantastic for decorating. It has a ton of floor space, mannequins, lots of display cases and wall racks, and is laid out very nicely.

If you really want to decorate your home easily, play Morrowind. :) We seem to be losing ground each game forward.

Make a savegame first.

1.tcl (in console command) -> Enter

2."Fly" to the object, the description of the object will appear (be patient) and catch it

3."Fly" to a space (in the cell) free enough without being "touched" by objects, floor, ceiling, walls, etc, to avoid glitches when you turn on the collision

4. tcl (in console command) ->Enter (to toggle collision ON again)

I hope this will be understandable
Got it! Thanks! :D

Technically all of gaming is pointless - but its fun. Thats why we do it, no?
Gaming being fun automatically gives it a point, therefore it's not pointless.
