Is decorating your house pointless?

By pointless, I mean, every time I re enter my home, things are strewn everywhere! Is there wa way to get items to stay in place?

Drop items, leave game cell, re-enter game cell, arrange items. If you accidentally pick up any items, drop just those items and repeat steps two through four.

Yes, like most things you do in Skyrim.

I did full decoration of the house in Solitude and in one of the rooms (bedroom?) a chest or desk or something was filled with gold and gems enough to pay for half of the upgrades. Add in the soul gems and other miscellaneous stuff and the upgrades were just about free.

I don't understand having your "stuff strewn everywhere". I put stuff in chests etc. and have never had a problem. Are you just dropping things on the floor? If so, why?

Just do what http://www.gamesas.com/user/708273-iistealxx/ said. Go inside, drop what you want to arrange, walk out, go back in and arrange the items you dropped. They'll then stay put.

That is what I have done and afterward, everything stays where I put it. I, personally, enjoy decorating my homes.

You put something on top of a desk, spent 10 minutes to get it to sit in the right place and orientation. Next time you come back to your house, said item will be somewhere on the floor (if you are lucky as sometimes they fall *through* the floor and are gone forever).

So yes, decorating your house is pointless and items will not stay where you put them.

My house in Riften did the same, spent about an hour laying things out to have them all thrown on the floor when I came back with more to put around the house
very annoying.. :swear:

This is very effective.

I love decorating homes, it's fun. It technically is "pointless", as the OP says, but I do it because I want to personalize the space. The original houses can look a bit dull.

this is a nice work around, but it sure would be nicer if it would 'just work' like OB. I can't imagine a scenario where this is a feature and not a bug, so hopefully they will fix it someday.

Technically all of gaming is pointless - but its fun. Thats why we do it, no?

It doesn't change the fact that decorating is broken and should be fixed.

Thanks.

To that point, which house is best for decorating? Breezehome in Whiterun only has one weapon stand and 2 book cases. I plan to just place my armor trophies on shelves. Really more of a showcase of uniques/artifacts and such. I'm collecting dragon claws, too.

Is there an item limit in a specific house/cell? I remember in FO3 decorating the house in Megaton, eventually it would crash or have missing textures every time I entered if I put too many items in there. It was looking cool as hell, too.

I had a jar with a butterfly in it that I lovingly placed on the table in my home in Whiterun. I left and came back later to find it jammed into the ceiling and no matter what I do I can't touch it. :(

Exactly how I think. It may have no effect on gameplay whatsoever, but I adore doing it! The house feels more homey with all my loot around.

On another related note. Why has the "touch an object and see anything near it rocket away as if you kicked it, or fall through the floor" bug never been addressed since Oblivion? Although it is funny when it startles me in Fallout when I try to pick up an item near a skeleton and suddenly that skeleton goes dancing across the room.

Rosethorn hall was the BEST. I had treasure absolutely falling off the shelves in that joint.

I am a pathetic collector of ether treasure, and I don't care who knows it :)

I actually liked the book cases better in OB because then it took some skill to line things up right and my books stayed 'right'

Now the book cases are kind of worse because they never look full and lots of times the books just fall over anyway. And I can't seem to create bookends out of cool stuff like I did in OB.

Save game.

Drop item.

Pick up and hold item.

Waddle to desired item resting place.

Place item.

Save game.

Leave cell.

Travel to non-contigous cell. IOW, leaving Breezehome, travel to the Drunken Hunstman.

Go home.

Is object as left, or desired? No?

Goto top.

Make a savegame first.

1.tcl (in console command) -> Enter

2."Fly" to the object, the description of the object will appear (be patient) and catch it

3."Fly" to a space (in the cell) free enough without being "touched" by objects, floor, ceiling, walls, etc, to avoid glitches when you turn on the collision

4. tcl (in console command) ->Enter (to toggle collision ON again)

I hope this will be understandable :)

I know you can do this workaround, but how is this the desired behavior? Its a bug. A long standing and known bug that has gotten little (if any?) attention.

Its an functional step backwards from OB too, why can't they fix it? Home decoration is a fun past time for a lot of TES fans (i think?) as evidenced by the discovery of workarounds.

btw, cool you're in auburn. I am in seattle!

Rosethorn is beautiful, though I must say the Cheydinhal house is my absolute favorite in Oblivion.
About the bookcases, I don't mind books falling, but I wish we could drag misc. items and place them on the shelves along with the books.
