Disappointed in the target highlighting

Post » Thu Nov 07, 2013 9:08 am

Just watched the gameplay video (from August) on Youtube: The Elder Scrolls Online Gameplay - QuakeCon 2013

I hope the game will ship with options to disable target highlighting around enemies, dead bodies, etc. (white glows, red glows, etc outlining targetable objects)

The combat around 6:40-6:50 looks completely ridiculous and not at all like TES. It is extremely distracting and a big disappointment to see it in the video. I can't believe there is such a huge focus on keeping a clean interface in tandem with older TES games, yet something like this makes it in?

It's these little things that probably seem trivial but will simply kill the immersion. The bar is going to be really high for this game as far as keeping it inline with prior TES games.

Pretty much everything else in the video looks amazing though.

Yeah who wants to know exactly what or who they're targeting out of dozens or hundreds of enemies on screen. Efficiency be damned.

ps. You'll be able to disable or change it anyway.

They might just allow you to disable or even reduce the size of it. Just, maybe.

There will probably be an option to reduce and disable it.

Also, why do I always see people wanting this game to be more like TES? Do MMO's have that bad of a reputation?

SWTOR did not really help matters when it touted itself as a unique MMO and it ended up being a WOW clone with a Star Wars skin.

Also, of course people want it to be like TES, it IS a TES game. OF course, there are many things that are going to HAVE to change for sake of balance and gameplay, targeting like this being one of them.

Not really when there is a huge amount of things on screen, you really need something to know what exactly you're actually aiming at.

World of Warcraft was about Warcraft and it was a RTS game. What's your point?

huh? I assume you refer to the part unrelated to the OP. The game is TES Online, so I want "TES" Online, not WoW reskinned.

True, but did you notice the last word in the title? Did you notice what type of game they're making?

Yeah, but I wouldn't really count it as part of the TES franchise. However, what's bothering me is any time someone wants an MMO feature in this game, he gets targeted (see what I did there?) saying that isn't true to TES, etc. This is a TES game AND an MMO; we can't have too many features exclusive to TES, nor features exclusive to an MMO.

He meant that WOW was an MMO to an RTS game, a completely different game style then WOW is, but WOW is based off of WARcraft

Me I did not really care for W.O.W. This game for sure looks swell in the making, the video's I seen and many of the concepts that were drawn look good. I think this game is going to be very much worth getting. I've always wanted to play a M.M.O and this is game I'd prefer for people to get. Because as I'm saying you won't see TES 6 for awhile, but I don't want to go off discussion about that. I hope to see this game and how it works and how fun the game is. I know there may be a few bugs reported here and there, but that's what can happen when you got to rely on your budget for the game your designing.

It IS part of the TES series, just not a main series game. It is sort of like what Pokemon stadium 1 and 2 was to the Pokemon Gen 1&2 games.

ESO is being made by a different company then who makes the main series TES games, this will not affect the main series at all in terms of release date most likely.

WoW does it with nameplates, other games use circles around the feet. So why does this one need to use full body glow?

Warcraft was an RTS game, a completely different genre than World of Warcraft. Just because it has "TES" in the title doesn't mean that the game still can't have MMO features in it. You just need to realize that.

If you think you can wade through 200 nameplates on screen, then I got some bad news for you, broseph.

Like I said, I'm sure they will allow you to disable it or lower the glow. Just sayin'.

Oh I already know this is being made by another company, I was just suggestion get this game and play this till the next Tes game is out, I mean likely could be 3-4 years from now or 5-6. Also this would give you a lot to do when your bored and have free time on this. :D

Yeah, broseph. I played for 6 years. I also have played other games related to this subject. 50 people in AV doesn't compare to 200 people on screen.

In my OP I acknowledged the rest of the video as being amazing. Including all of the other clearly MMO features that have been added. I'm not saying it can't have ANY MMO features, i'm just saying this one in particular svcks, is distracting, and totally unnecessary.

How?

I support a toggle. But an arrow would be even more intrusive, a circle on the ground is never visible enough. There are no distinguished name plates so far as we know.

So...how?

Except it HAS a purpose. Just because you don't like the purpose of it doesn't mean it's totally unnecessary.
