My dissection of the Hearthfire trailer

Post » Thu Nov 15, 2012 4:21 pm

I have done a dissection of the trailer and tried to find things that I hadn't heard here before. I realize that some of these are rather obvious, but I will state those I haven't really seen in discussions before anyways.

(Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvhQZoyZn1g)

0:27 - The schematics refer to it as a "small house layout". This could either imply that there are many different house designs to start with or that it is just the base of the house and that any addition is made from the drafting table.

0:29 - The carpenter's workbench has a section called "house" so I would guess this is where you create walls and roofs and such things. I'm also guessing that this is where we make furniture if we can do so.

0:30 - A new section of forging will be added where you can craft hinges for the doors, iron fittings (what ever that is), locks and nails. Since we get locks and hinges, I would guess that we get to create the doors and chests ourselves.

0:32 - the design book says "West Wing - Green House". This could imply that there is in fact only one house design after all since it seems like you can't choose where to place your rooms.

0:34 - Again, the book clearly states that the enchanter's tower is in the west wing.

0:39 - The greenhouse before it is filled with plants. Hopefully this means that we can plant any plant we desire in the greenhouse. There is also an interior workbench between the doors.

0:40 - The greenhouse with plants and butterflies.

0:45 - simply an empty cellar

0:46 - The same cellar, now with furniture. "Use the interior workbench to decorate each room with a large variety of craftable objects" Hopefully this means that we can both make our own decorations and that we can decide where to place everything, even manikins and carpets.

0:49 - A collection of all divine shrines, obviously

0:55 - The trophies are the same as the loading screens (but they look awesome so it's good). However, the wolf statue consists of a single wolf while the loading screen consists of two. This means that they have been adapted to fit as trophies, which is nice.

1:00 - The fish hatchery has something called Salmon Roe (this isn't my discovery!), and in the upper left corner it says "give gift". I'm not sure why it says that...

1:07 - We will be able to have both a smelter and a grindstone.

1:08 - Rayya is apparently a Redguard steward, but her dialogue implies that she is a housecarl.

1:10 - Valdimar seems to be a housecarl as well. When you ask him "where can I buy materials like glass or straw?" He can be heard saying something with "Whiterun..." This implies that there will be a new vendor in Whiterun or that one of them will have more to sale. Valdimar is also wearing a new version of the same armor the player has in this trailer, if I'm not mistaking it. (Edit: it seems to be the Horned Scaled Armor, sorry)

1:25 . Judging from the bench, Lucia will be found in Whiterun where she is "begging". Judging from the name, she will be an imperial child, which means that there is indeed children of other races if it is true. However, that doesn't mean that there will be elven children or beast children, but it could.... (Edit: There already were children of different human races already, fail on my part, sorry)

1:31 - you will be able to tell the children to go outside, give them gifts, tell them to do their chores and play games with them.

1:35 - Here we can see a forge in the cellar, so yes, you can have a forge in your house! : D

Oh wow thanks I never saw the Give Gift in the corner. Would be a really nice addition to the game if Bethesda allows us to give gifts to certian NPCs.

Looks like Vladimir is wearing the horned scaled armor. It's available in the vanilla game, but you made some nice observations about the basemant...so happy I can forge in it!

And yes, I am really glad that I can finally craft my weapons in the same place as I enchant them!

The base game already contains Imperial, Nord, Breton and Redguard children. Only non-humans are omitted. So thus far there is no evidence of children of other races.

What, really? Where can you find those children?

There's a list of all the children in the game, sorted by race. They all look pretty similar apart from hair/skin color, so it's sort of hard to tell them apart, but they're in there. NPC data reveals their race.

We know of seven children who are likely to be adoptable: Lucia (a new arrival), Gralnach (Heartwood Mill), Aventus (Windhelm), and the four from Honorhall (Riften). That's three Nords, two Imperials, a Breton, and one unknown (Lucia could be either Imperial or Redguard). No word on non-human kids, but it's at least possible.

Like to a non-follower spouse? That would be nice.

I hope the kids that are in the orphanage (and Aventus) are adoptable; a lot of people wanted to adopt them in the first place. Otherwise that would be a bit sad and annoying.

Developer diary #6 indicates that the idea for adoption came from someone asking what happens to the kids in Honor Hall. So I am guessing they will be adoptable.

I expect that was the feeling of the person who worked on it for the sizzle reel, and that this pervading desire to adopt those kids is what has ultimately spurred Bethesda into adding the option.

That's correct. And truth be told, Constance's policy of not allowing the children to be adopted maked no sense. It was only in place because Bethesda chose not to include an adoption mechanic in the vanilla game. Now that we have one, the most logical place to find adoptable children is the local orphanage.

one thing that worries me is that both the tower and the greenhouse are under westwing, this may suggest that you can only choose one of these per house :(

So are the bedrooms for the children as I recall. They call it a WING because it has multiple rooms. RL example the West Wing of the White House contains, the Cabinet Room, Executive Office, Oval Office. Press Briefing Room, Roosevelt Room and the Situation Room.

When someone talks about the [direction] wing of there house it means they live in a big [censored] house.

But the childrens rooms are on the top floor weren't they? From the look of it the tower and the greenhouse possibly take up the same space, by wing they may have meant a room at the bottom and a few at the top

Once again a wing has multiple rooms. If your house is big enough you could have two dozen rooms in the west wing. By the description of the enchanters tower the work in done up top which means it can easily overlap the greenhouse. This is course assuming the tower and garden can only go on the west wing. Its quite possible we have options for where the rooms go.

This is true, it wouldn't be a wing if it wasn't multiple rooms
