Distant shading of gray? I can't see very far...

Post » Wed Jan 23, 2013 4:39 am

I'm not saying that some of these areas are mist free. One can clearly see the difference in mist forming in a corner and the entire background shrouded in a gray haze.

I thank you for taking the time to check your game.

However, you do have the influence of a powerful altering mod (RCRN) and I am wondering if you backed up far enough into the tunnel to get the jest of it.

Maybe is't because I am NOT running a lighting mod or ENB that is why I notice it more now than before.

Maybe I should install COT and a basic ENB cinfig...lol

Here's my take on this issue.

I'm in Bleak Falls, standing at the top of the stairs, looking at the main entrance (just visible behind the column). The shafts of light are easily visible in the far distance on the right:

Now I take 2 steps back and go down the first 2 stairs and.........

As I move back and forth the greyness actually fades out and fades in along with the HDR lighting effect (or whatever witchcraft Bethesda use for the lighting effects).

Now I've experimented myself I can see where the OP is coming from, and I too have no idea what the cause or cure is except that I think it's maybe a glitch caused be a combination of the fog effects and HDR effects. Although I can't say I've seen it happen this bad in any other location.

Sweet Mary Mother Jesus!!

That's it! The damn ambient fog....

The mod does the trick. However, I can't help but think it just sets or adds a line to one of the ini files.

A thousand thank yous, my friend!

Oh..And as promised..

KUDOS!

I went to BleakFall Barrows. And I am seeing the same effect.
But indeed, only at that spot. Standing on the stairs leaving the first room.

I've ran through the whole dungeon, looking for the same effect. In 2-3 spots, I could see something similar. In very long corridors, I would see that the very far end would be the same kind of grayish. But it was hardly noticable, and it would not be irritating at all.

I don't think it's a glitch. I think this is how the technology is supposed to work. In any engine, they try to limit the amount of computation that is needed to render stuff that is further away. Detail draw distance. Shadow distance. Etc. It's just that in this spot in BFB it is very noticable. I hadn't noticed it earlier in the game (and I got 250+ hours played).

Also, it is a natural effect of the eye to see less clear colors for stuff that is far away. Painters do the same thing in their paintings. Stuff that is far away gets more and more grey. Videogames have been doing this since as long as I can remember.

Maybe the OP had changed some settings to change the distance of this effect ? Cinco, had you tried with original inis (without tweaks) ?

Anyway, I'm happy for you that that addon fixed it for you.

While I have not tried with vanilla ini files. It has the same effect on the Xbox. I don't see it as a glitch either. It is an effect implemented by the game. Even then, I do not see it as a distant rendering supplement.

The game is drawing the entire cell at load. This "ambient fog" is drawn in addition to that. It hasn't been that big of an issue in the past, but with my current character, it is quite the pain, as there have been times she needed to snipe an enemy and they would be patrolling, shrouded in this added effect.

The dungeon that almost lost me a controller, was Forelhost Stronghold. The ruin atop the mountain SE of Riften. It was the worst I have experienced yet.

Thankfully there was a mod author that recognized this as an annoyance and created this mod in the CK.

I am guessing the ambient fog for the xbox version is either non existent or much lower resolution quality or saturation.....can't say for sure my PC is my console.

The Ambient Fog is the same for all versions. Be that Xbox, PS3 or PC.The mod that fixed the issue (well, it is part of the game...so, it altered the issue) extends the Ambient Fog distance beyond the parameters of the cell. It's still there, but it's set so far out it is only in the void of the world space.

I started poking around in the file of the mod and found where it is adjusted. The interior cells of DLC is not altered , due to the author not currently supporting the mod. However, by manual editing each interior the near and far settings of Ambient Fog can be easily extended.

EDIT : Here is the adjustment I made for the cave at Fort Dawnguard. Granted I am still running CoT. So, the interiors are pitch Black, but you can see the difference.

With AF http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/900984163701173166/887257D1C79321D699F5B1091DE49FAF69120F9C/

Without AFhttp://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/900984163701244430/B0567C9C16B3B147DD19A43371C1C4AC49819956/

With darker dungeons, the AF actually lets you see in the dark areas, which opposes the reason to have dark interiors to start with.
