Games companies have always been in the business of making money. That's what businesses do. There was no golden age of game dev altruism.
I usually go for the 'Nintendo'-kind of games anyway. The philosophy behind these kind of games in general seems to differ a lot from the Playstation/Xbox games; whether it's a different target audience, or a different starting point I don't know.

The Fire Temple theme had Islamic chanting, something along the lines of "There is no God but Allah, who is the greatest of all." Needless to say it became controversial because people care way too much, and it's for the same reason the crescent and star was removed. It's a little sad.
I thought it was the Ashlanders in Morrowind...
