Ditched new age gaming..and having SO much fun!

Post » Fri May 10, 2013 1:26 am

As a gamer, I have been fairly disappointed by new gaming systems and games. All games focus soley on graphics. Blowing millions of their budget on that next polygon and shimmer effect. No thank you, quite honestly.

But lately, I got rid of my PS3 and 360, and hooked up my SNES, N64, GameCube, and Gameboy Advance. Let me tell you, I haven't had this much fun in YEARS!!

Super Mario 64
Diddy Kong Racing
Star Fox 64
Ocarina of Time
Star Wars Episode I Pod Racer

Dragon Warrior III
Link to the Past DX
Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced

Super Mario World
Super Mario All-Stars
Donkey Kong Country

Wind Waker
Metroid Prime trilogy

I mean holy crap. The level of fun and enjoyability in these games is astounding. Bad graphics, simple gameplay, but...it's fun?

I will take this over new eye candy any day. :)

Aye, most of the games I play nowadays are from the 90s and early 2000s. It's not because I dislike new games, but because there haven't been anything interesting for me since Dark Souls. There are lots of upcoming games I'm very excited for this year, though. :D

Plus, it takes more than a week for you to finish enjoying them. :bunny: :bunny: :bunny:

Also invest in Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark, and Twilight Princess. Those are classics and so memorable.

That reminds me of http://xkcd.com/606/. Its nice to go back and get a nostalgia shgot from Red Alert 2 or Halo 2 (its nostalgic for me ok?) but I'm of the opinion that there are plenty of great games still being made, you just need to avoid the hype and wait for reviews.

This message brought to you by Nintendo.

Yes, games back then were a lot of fun. They weren't trying to shock us with high res textures. They weren't trying to tell these grand dramatic soap opera stories. They weren't trying to be taken seriously as "art". They weren't trying to sell billions of copies. They were just trying to entertain in the way only games can.

The target demographic was a lot younger. Too few people now are willing to embrace their inner child, to take a step back and just relax for a second.

Goldeneye is one of my favorite N64 games. It's impressive how much fun the multiplayer can be with only 2-4 players.

I wish I still had my old Nintendo consoles and my PS2 :( In my honest opinion, Gamecube was pretty underrated, Windwaker and Super Mario Sunshine were so fun! N64 has my Banjo-Kazooie memories and SNES has my Yoshi's Island memories :D

Believe it or not, Gamecube had the best graphics out of the Xbox and PS2 era.

Yes, it was. I loved the GameCube, because it had so many awesome games: Luigi's Mansion, Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, Mario Party 4-6, Mario Kart Double Dash, Super Smash Bros Melee, and probably lots of other awesome games I'm forgetting.

So much fun was had with friends with that console, especially with Double Dash and Mario Party. Lots of raging.

Turok Evolution is missing off his list. (Most stupid, yet fun I have ever played.)

I prefer Perfect Dark, bur Goldeneye is also extremely good. Perfect Dark's multiplayer had so much customization options you could get buried in them hahah.

Right behind me is my console station. Sega Genesis, Nintendo 64, and Playstation 2 all hooked up. Then my PC I can spin my chair around and be right there. It's all in one location hahaha. I never realized how much of a mercenary I was, it seems I have never been loyal to one manufacturer or another.

correction: better graphics doesn't cost millions.

to get higher res textures all you need is a few button presses on your digital camera. A budget digital camera of 80$ can capture pictures of 8k resolution that could be used as textures if there were graphics cards fast enough to use such resolutions.

to get better lighting you don't have to pay anything extra. the engine developers update their engines every so for free, and they don't charge extra money for the updates. and usually its a few clicks away, like turning feature X "on" or "off" on a dialogue option menu.

I still play my NES, Sega Genesis, and SNES all the time.

It has nothing to do with disliking new games or new consoles.... it's just that many of the old games are still very fun to play!

Simple as that.

Speaking of playing old games, what is pretty cool is that these days a lot of old games are being remastered/ released in HD (the Sonic series being the big one). Old games are making a pretty good comeback! :D

Yes, I agree. I didn't like how they removed the crescent and star from Ocarina of Time and altered several things, though. Seems like they're tip toeing over stuff people might find offensive or controversial. One of the reasons I found the game frightening was also because of the low texture quality, which led my brain to make lots of creepy interpretations when I was younger.

I'm still sad about the fact that they changed the fire temple theme. :(

No one can deny the reason and motivation behind developers has changed. It's not about making enjoyable games for our benefit. It's about marketing to the masses so that the developer can prosper.

Anyone who denies this is, no offense, disillusioned.

Ah, yes, the original Fire Temple music...I wonder if I am allowed to link it

And what "crescent and star" are you talking about?

http://zeldaspeedruns.com/system/images/18/original/symbol%20change.jpg?1306991333 As you can see they ditched it for some other symbols later on.

And of course you're allowed to link the Fire Temple song, because it's awesome.
