Does it work going full dagger?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 7:13 pm

I have seen the threads about the daggers and their ''low damage'', they work for sneaking but do they work in combat?
I can see it being hard in dungeons and while fighting dragons...
Any tips on what to combine it with? Magic? Bows? Shouts?
And the daggers have limited range so i see how it could affect fighting a strong melee enemy like a giant for instance(though i know that you can sneak up on them and onehit them)
So... What do you say?

Not impossible, but they're weaker in melee combat. It's best for sneaking, though, since it does more damage for sneak attacks, so you could use daggers when sneaking and switch to a sword, axe or mace when you're detected.

Tried it, hated it, got pwned so often.

Now on a 2-Handed, but lightly armored sneaky archer type.....

I play a level 27 Assassin type character. I use Dual Daggers with a Bow (mainly to distract/soul steal). It works just fine but I find it a bit difficult, especially at lower levels, to rely on going toe-to-toe with anything using Daggers. You really need to take advantage of your Stealth/Bow early on with the damage bonus to Bow out of stealth in Sneak tree. I would say until you get backstab, just use Dual Swords or something or Sneak with Bow. Also, you must rely on stealth a lot and get good at distracting enemies with your bow etc.

Just use heavily enchanted daggers and you should be fine even outside sneak-mode. As for any melee char, dragons will be a problem so shouts will be needed and I'd actually spash in loads of poisons for a only dagger build. So basically very high smithing, enchanting, alchemy, one-handed and sneak would be your build.

Can you double power attack from stealth? If so do the first two strikes count as x15? I've had times where my initial x15 didn't kill but my follow up triggered the animation.

So if i use onehanded, will it help me with my dagger later? Like, does the dagger count as a one-handed weapon?

And thank you for your tip, i am sure this will help other people too!

Dagger is classified as a one handed weapon, so yes, if you use any one handed weapon (Mace, Longsword, Axe) then you will reap the benefits from the skill tree.

However after my personal experience with daggers, I've found out they are absolute crap.

You're better off stabbing someone with a feather.

This might be because you are either using regular swing with one dagger or power attack with one dagger. You really should use, at all tmes, either Dual Attack with both daggers (both mouse buttons) or Dual Power Attack with Daggers (Hold both mouse keys). As soon as you start playing like that, daggers start doing a ton more damage. Also, it just takes a bit practice to lure multiple enemies out. For example, If you have multiple guys that are standing together, just shoot your arrow once, on the ground preferably because hitting the enemy opens up the sneak eye more then not hitting them, then let them come towards your direction to search. Before they reach you the eye should be closed. So while you re-gain hidden status, start approaching the last guy from behind and take him out. Rinse and repeat.

If that doesn't work and you get detected, just sprint towards opposite direction and hide until you are hidden again. Low level play as a dagger/dagger assassin has to play like this to be viable until you get higher. Or alternatively, just use your bow more.

I thought daggers were supposed to be fast, and so I thought dual wielding them would be godly, but you can only attack one at a time, what a waste!

I see... Smithing for making the daggers, enchanting for.. well echanting them, alchemy for stealthpotions and poisions, one-handed for the noob swords and the daggers later on and sneak for very little chances of getting detected.. Perfect! :D

Actually the double dagger power attack gets 3 hits in. So you can get 15x 3 hits in the power attack if you do it right.

I'm using a dagger as my main weapon(Mehrunes' Razor to be exact) and I have it upgraded as well (It's "Exquisite"). It definitely help when you have Assassin's Dagger perk or whatever it's called so you do 15x the damage and also have those Shrouded Gloves(Double damage on a sneak attack). Dragons are difficult but I almost always get that Instant Kill in thanks to Mehrunes' Razor.

As I said above, you should attack with both daggers (both mouse buttons) or hold both mouse button to do dual dagger power attack.

Actually, smithing for upgrading your daggers from base daggers to superior, which add quite a few points of damage. (requires a lot of smithing and a lot of smithing perks). Enchanting for powerful effects on the daggers, yes. Alchemy for, indeed invisibility and poisons. One-handed for the dual-perks and all damage boosting perks, which do make your daggers even more deadly. Sneak for the x15 damage bonus and ability to hide from enemies even if you are seen.

The key to using a full dagger build is to keep the backstabs rolling by utilizing Shadow Warrior and Nightingale Agent of Stealth power to keep vanishes rolling. I posted my experiences and tips in this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1270770-uber-assasin-build/page__gopid__19274062 with running a pure assassin. If done correctly it's absolutely devastating.

Just be smart about it.

Daggers have no Sneak attack advantages until you actually purchase the perk for 15x Dagger Sneak attacks.

Daggers may be silent, but you don't need perfect silence to Sneak well.

I used a 1h Sword or Axe for a hell of a long time until I got the perk for 15x Dagger Sneak attacks.

Also, Smithing upgrades add the same flat +damage to any 1h weapon type, so Daggers get slightly favored with Smith upgrades. Keep your blades sharp.

You start the quest in one of the most Northern main towns, can't remember the name but it's between Solitude and Winterhold by the ocean.

The blade of woe is currently doing 2 more damage than my best sword a fine elven sword, really the increased attack speed does compensate for the lowered damage but they tend to be a bit weaker than swords but there certainly still viable. Of course sneak attacks with shrouded gloves and the "assassin" perks make daggers amazingly useful but I hold my own in a fair fight so I can't see why daggers wouldn't be useable maybe not the best but certainly enough to get the job done.

I don't know how daggers fare in combat because most of my enemies die in 1 sneak attack. So they never give me the chance to try out actual combat. :hubbahubba:

Though there is no reason for you to use daggers in 1 on 1 combat. You could always use a 1H sword for that.
