I don't like steam

Post » Fri Aug 03, 2012 8:47 am

I don't like steam. To be more precisely, I don't like dwarven ruins in Skyrim. Those ruins are filled with steam and high technology things such as robots which really ruin the immersion of a fantasy word based on sword and magic.

The dwaves have amazing prices on games and tons of great sales.

Mechanical robots powered by a form of industrial magic created by a race of long-extinct elves? Sounds pretty fantasy to me.

*successfully fooled into thinking its Anti-Steam thread and going, REALLY? 9 months + of Skyrim on steam and folks still aren't use to it??*

Steams the best thing you see all day after frosting your glutious maximus in the frigid breath of Skyrims towering Peaks, the Dwemer had the right Idea.

And their potato salad is to die for.

But seriously, folks. The Dwemer were what would be considered, on Tamriel, a technologically advanced race. Of course they had that stuff, and turns out they were so good at making it that much of it is still in good working order long after they're gone. Then there's the fact that they were practically *infamous* for having rejected the traditional magical mumbo jumbo in favor of something that looks suspiciously like (what we would call) "science" to anybody else on the continent.

What they left behind may not be in keeping with some people's expectations of the typical sword'n'spell fantasy world, but it appears to be perfectly in keeping with the established lore of this particular one.

I find steampunk one of the greatest things in a fantasy universe if done correctly, which the Dwarven ruins definitely are. It also keeps to lore very well. I don't understand how you couldn't like them, but to each their own I suppose.

I like Dwemer Ruins. I like dungeons that take awhile to clear and Dwemer Ruins usually take the longest.

Yeah, sounds fantasy indeed. However, I don't like to fight robots or something like that no matter what their power are.

Steamed? Those dwemer just steamed all their food and steamed everything else, didn't they? Steamy.

Can't this immersion just be fixed by not going to the ruins? You don't have to for the most part.

But to be fair I have come to hate the sound of steam hissing anywhere around me, if only because it makes me think a Falmer is gonna pop out at me from somewhere.

When I first started playing I didn't even realize that the *hiss* was coming from the Dwemer machinery, I thought it was some creepy noise the Falmer were making in the shadows. Even knowing that it's not, I still can't get past the association. In theory I love the Dwemer ruins because I think they look awesome and are such a change from the rest of the stuff you come across - you can really see that this is the remnant of a much, much different culture than anything else around. But in practice I hate going into them, I died so many times doing it early on that even at higher levels with endgame gear and skillz I still look at my journal and think, "Hmmm... investigate Dwemer ruin? Yeah I'll just save that one for later kthxbai." :P

They loved steam so much, they all turned into steam centuries ago.

Man I guess Mass Effect series could be lore friendly as long as they claim those space ships are powered by Magic Electricity and Magic Laser.

They should make a DLC where you can open a chain of steamed food restaurants in Dwemer ruins.

There is already so much Magic Electricity on Tamriel that you'd think they would have figured out a way to use it besides sparking people to death.

Damn, here I was hoping this was a Steamworks thread. I am disappointed now. :(

When I first heard about Dwarvin ruin in Skyrim I wa already aware of the dwarves role in TES but was still a bit skeptical on how they would manage to implement it without screwing up the rest of the game. I've been pretty critical of Skyrim so far, but can give credit where it's due. I think The dwarven ruins were well done, in fact, they are one of my favorite places to go dungeon diving.

I've heard about those before, but what's the source?

For the true steam-hater, look up the Imperfects from Tribunal. Those and the Fabricants.
