I don't like the map.

I get that with Skyrim being populated my mountainous regions, it makes sense to have a more three-dimensional aspect to the map. But what is in the game is just clunky and imprecise. For one thing, if you're going to allow the user to rotate the map, then include the requisite "North" arrow.

Yup. It's more for looks than it is functionality.

Agreed.

and I hate to say and im sorry to say it but mods is the solution Beth won't do a damn thing.

turning the local map into the main that you can scroll in and out would be nice although I don't know how hard such will be.

Agreed.
I honestly hope that in next TES, Bethesda will make a normal map.
Purpose of the map is not to be pretty, but to be useful.
Also, how the hell are we suppose to navigate when there are bloody clouds on the map!?

The map is pure evil... I can't use it to navigate my way up a mountain no matter how hard I try.

Useless map. I want a useful map not a pretty-but-entirely-useless map please.

A 2D map isn't going to make it any easier to navigate the mountainous areas. You just have to learn where the traverse-able slopes are.

Yeah, I have to agree. The map plain svcks. The 3d map is pretty, but if there was a 2d option, I'd probably never use the 3d map again.

The map is functional in the sense that Beth only ever intended you to use it for fast-travel. I'm not sure they really wanted you to use it as a guide as we did in previous games, unfortunately.

EDIT - But I agree it's otherwise useless.

I feel like the minority, I thought while the map isn't the best, it gets the job done. I have had no issues navigating it other than trying to remember locations of cities now and again.

To be fair, the world map in Morrowind wasn't much better. And if you think Skyrim's 3D world map is bad....you don't ever want to know what Daggerfall's dungeon maps were like..... :bolt:

I would have loved a map system like in AoC. It would be nice to have those various veins and other little oddities i've found marked on my map and saved...

I think this is actually an important point. Much of Skyrim's terrain would be confusing to naviagte by a 2D map. I think we would be seeing daily threads complaining about getting lost and calling for a 3D map to help navigate mountains if Bethesda had given us a 2D map.

I think the current map would be much improved with better marking of roads and trails, however. That is something that is lacking even with .ini tweaks (with the possible exception of Mikanoshi's "World Map in full 3D" which allows the player to zoom right into towns).

I learned when Daggerfall came out that Bethesda couldn't resist designing maps that put usefulness at the bottom of the list. Sure, the world maps are good for fast travel, and that seems to be their primary purpose, but whether its pride or something else, Bethesda just can't take anyone else's idea for a map that works and use it in their games.

(Oh, yeah, and the first time I saw it, I thought the cloud cover on the world map was their way of showing the "fog of war" hahahha)

View the map entirely from above and then zoom in. You can, ironically, see topographic differences the best from that view.

apparently I'm the only one, but I love the map.
I wish it rotated slightly more, but it looks gorgeous and has never given me trouble navigating.

The map was a waste of development resources by bethesda. Give me a map that looks like paper or parchment instead please

Bethesda if you want to make it better just add the major roads to the in game map please. That alone will make me like it better. Major roads should be solid lines and trails should be dashes.

:D
