I don't go to Markarth

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 7:28 pm

I liked the area. The one place I never go is near Dawn Star. I'm pretty sure on my first character I hadn't gone there until around 60+ hours playtime, and that's bc I HAD to for a quest.

I don't like dwarfs or dwemer in the TES games or any games really. I find the whole dwemer ruins thing to be OK I guess, but I'm just so tired of those big empty ruins with barely any reward or payoff.

Some people love d0rfs, but I've just never been a fan. I like Drow/Dark elves and half elves, Trolls, Angels and Demons as RPG races.

Wood elves are ok sometimes if the graphics are done right.

My current character has been spending most of her time in The Reach and she just bought a house in Markarth. I will admit the terrain is much more difficult to navigate than in other regions but there's a lot to explore too. If you're into smithing there's plenty of good mining spots in The Reach.

I only truly know my way around whiterun, windhelm, solitude, riften and markath.
Extremely rarely have I visited dawnstar, falkreath, morthal and I cant even remember the name of the other 1 off the top off my head. I've played 400+ hours and cannot name 1 npc from any of these 4. Its probably the lack of stores in these settlements. Maybe they have some quests or things of interest but I just never actually bother to go visit them

i can only name Hroki in Markath...

Markarth is my favorite city and Vindrel Hall is the best looking house in the game (IMO). The problem is that the place is horribly set up to live in so I end up not spending a lot of time there either. For example, Honeyside in Riften is well set up in terms of shops/trading opportunities, so it seems like no matter what goals I begin with, I always end up living there. In Markarth the smithing area is on the other side of town and there's what, three shops in entire place? Two of which are on the other side of town. It's too bad they made such a neat looking place that's so poorly functional.

This also has the result of that area of the map ending up being under-explored by me (although at this point there isn't a lot I haven't seen).

At least Markath has a smelter, which is more than I can say for Riften or Solitude.

if you get the fence and invest you can up the total pretty nicely.

Getting a fence through the TG is more doable than spending all the perks to get it through the speech tree. And it's what 5 or 6 perks plus a 70 in speech to get Investor? By that point in the game I'm wrapping the character up and I have more money than I know what to do with. What they should have done is made Investor something like where you have to put several thousand gold into a shop and then over X amount of time your investment grows... or something.

I can Fast Travel from the front door of Honeyside to Whiterun and use the smelter there just as quickly as I can walk/run to the one from the front door of Vindrel Hall to the local smelter in Markarth. And then I can use the blacksmith equipment right next to it, sell stuff to what's her name; then go inside and sell more stuff---and then FT back to Riften to sell the rest. All in a much, much shorter time. But as far as Riften not having its own smelter, yeah, it's totally lame. Why the creators of the game did that, I have no idea. Same for Breezehome not having its own enchanting table for that matter.

I dig Markarth and I've really tried to make it my base of operations but it's horribly user unfriendly.

I just can't go there because there seems to be a glitch. I completed the Cidna Mine quest and escaped. Now everytime I step into the city, I hear the same annoying dialogue, "By order of the Jarl, stop right there!" since I DON'T SEEM TO HAVE A BOUNTY ON MY HEAD, I decide to do the jail option. He then says, "You're coming with me. No one escapes Cidna Mine. No one." And he does nothing! I exit the dialogue and he just says, "Alright then." and walks off.

P.S. I forgot how to spell Cidna.....

Dawnstar and Morthal look exactly the same. They might have well been combined to form a decent sized town.

I do like Markarth, I just wish it was bigger. In fact, I wish all the "Cities" were bigger. in fact, calling them "Towns" would be more appropriate cause if Whiterun is a city, than Riverwood is a town and if Riverwood is a town than I guess a village must be that tiny shack out in the middle of nowhere.

I was a little disgusted when I figured out there was no smelter in Solitude after I first bought Proudspire Manor. I try to keep Whiterun as the base for all my characters' smithing needs.

yes, many of the perks are for purely cosmetic, rp purposes and not efficiency.

it takes 5 perks to get it and, LIKE I STATED, is an ALTERNATIVE to the thieves guild.

so, for someone's character that won't join the thieves guild it would NOT be more 'doable.'

If breezehome had an enchanter, it would be hands down the best house in the game. It is the only house with an alchemy satchel next to the alchemy table. Why don't the other houses have ingredient storage containers within arms reach of the alchemy table? Marketh has a barrel pretty close, but Rifton does not have any storage on the same floor as the alchemy table (unless you want to put your ingredients in your thane's closet). What is up with that?

The Reach is the domain of the Dragonborn's official pastime. :)

Hjalti did it before you, and so must you now.

Me too... I just find being forced into a questline simply by entering a city to be one of those "oh, come on" moments. Why does a murder happen right when I get to town... right at the front gates. It's too big of a stretch of my suspension of disbelief.
Every city has at least a cutscene, if not an entire questline. And as far as why it happens there...
Spoiler
It's a terrorist attack. Those happen in marketplaces sometimes.

I would not call the Markath scene a "cutscene" since you can intervene and change the outcome. Now the Solitude scene is more of a cutscene since you cannot intervene and change the outcome. Bad Bethesda, should get your hand slapped for that one.

I found Markarth a fascinating city. The architecture and layout captivated me. However, upon entering I was quickly thrust into the Forsworn quest. By the time that was resolved I had become disgusted with the rampant corruption that permeated the city. Honestly, even Riften seems clean by comparison. The Reach is the "dirtiest" hold in Skyrim. I find it hard to want to visit.

What I mean is that every larger hold has some scripted event for when you first enter.

i noticed a slight problem with city layouts in this game, not the interior, but were they are on the map. every large city save whiterun is on a corner of the map, and thus i dont tend to get to them much, i do however get around to the smaller villiges that are in the wilderness.

to me the map layout should be 3 rings
inner ring: Capital city, largest, surrounding lands have few problems, most quests take place in the city.
middle ring: 4 large cities as we have now spread out, after this monsters and baddies start to get more frequent, quests split between inner and outer city.
outer ring: small settlements, these have many quests as there out in the wilds and lots of baddies attack them.

also markarth has the same problem skingrad did in oblivion, an anoying man that chases you around trying to start a quest. . . :\
