Markarth is the best looking city IMO, just doo bad there's next to nothing to do there. The first time I got there was after completing almost all the main questlines and just doing some random thieves guild pick-up. Once you get there you get a few quests, The Forsworn Conspiracy leading to one of the most interesting quests in the game. And other than the one thieves guild mission(two if you count rebuilding the guild) none of the main questlines even crosses it's path. There's just nothing holding you there, other than the scenery and the random pick-up/assassination you have no reason to be there. Hell, even the thieves guild quests seems to favor all the other decently sized cities.

In my opinion it's the most beautiful area in the game. The quests are pretty great too.

I don't go to Markarth because I don't like the force quest on us.

Indeed, that's annoying as hell. I tried to reload the game and tell that guy to [censored] off. Didn't do [censored].

I like the Reach because of its rough and savage beauty and I don't mind the occasional brute wearing a deer head and bikini armor trying to skin me alive. :D

Markath is another thing... I hate that corrupted and decadent town! The more I do quests related to Markath, the more I'm convinced none of its inhabitants is worthy of redemption.

I like the Reach because it's beautiful and interesting although it's understandable why people don't like it. The Reach and Markarth was designed to be unfriendly and wary of outsiders and it's always been that way.

Markarth is definitely one of my favorite cities. Although the main quest line with the Forsworn is a bit too short, but I think the city itself is very interesting to explore around. (despite it being quite difficult to navigate.. lol)

Markarth is usually the last "city" I visit too.

Markarth (outside of markarth, not the city itself) reminds me a lot of morrowind. Specifically that.. Balmor? City/Place. With all the dull grey mountains everywhere.

The thing is, there doesn't seem to be anything to explore there except for an infinite amount of forsworn camps.

If breezehome had an enchanter, it would be hands down the best house in the game. It is the only house with an alchemy satchel next to the alchemy table. Why don't the other houses have ingredient storage containers within arms reach of the alchemy table? Marketh has a barrel pretty close, but Rifton does not have any storage on the same floor as the alchemy table (unless you want to put your ingredients in your thane's closet). What is up with that?

I like the satchel and, iirc, on top of the bookcase in the alchemy room there is a chest for storage too.

On Topic: I don't mind Markarth, I visit now and then, but I never bought the house there. I might try it with another character though I do find the city a little confusing. And I don't care for the quest started by entering the town or the one outside the one house. But I usually don't bother with the note or the guy and avoid those quests altogether.

What ticked me off is I started a character with the idea of basing him out of Falkreath. I did the quests to become Thane before I found out there wasn't a fricking house to buy there. Felt like sticking the Jarl in the eye with a hot poker, but just left and worked out of Whiterun.

That's one of the beauties of the game - gives the sense that it's a big world. I rarely go near Riften or Winterhold and to me it adds a sense of size to the world that I wouldn't feel if I knew every area inside out.

Yeah fast travelling ten times.. Great.

No. It's fast travelling twice. And it's still more efficient than walking around Markarth trying to smith and sell the stuff you've just smithed. That points to a problem in how things are set up in Markarth, not a problem with the way I play the game.

There's no good reason the designers should have set the houses up the way they did in each city, with every house having some kind of major drawback (or in the case of Vindrel Hall, several different drawbacks).

There's no good reason every smithing shop in every city wouldn't also have a smelter. There are no good reasons why there aren't storage spaces next to each alchemy and enchanting station. It doesn't make things more interesting, it makes the game more tedious than it needs to be. If a player can get things done more efficiently by travelling a quarter of the way across the country instead of walking across town, it says something about the game is wonked.

I dig Markarth and I've really tried to make it my base of operations but it's horribly user unfriendly.
I don't think it's bad. I jump down to the main gate from Vlindrel Hall. You can sell at the general store, to the orc smith, use her equipment, and if necessary I fast travel up to the keep to sell to Calcelmo and the orc smith up there.

I think I should hide in this thread.

I murdered half the city of Markarth, because the City guards, and the Jarl HIMSELF intentionally, and willingly framed me of a murder I didn't commit.

I wasn't going to let them prance around, thinking it was over... <_<

The first time me and Marcurio essentially destroyed the city guard. I eventually reloaded a previous save and let them arrest me as I couldn't find any other way to advance the Forsworn Conspiracy quest and the city became useless while it was left unfinished.

After killing Madanach and escaping I assassinated the Silver-Bloods. I don't like corruption.

Hahahah. Me neither man. There's a lot of it in that game. I was hoping for the city to actually be... you know.. half-decent.. instead of murderous and treachery.

Well, it would have been nice if it had at least seemed cleaner after the events of that quest, but when it's all said and done, it feels just as dirty as when you start. It left my character feeling soiled or tainted, as though somehow I was now an unwitting part to this racket. I really like quests that have that powerful an impact on the player, but I would have dearly loved to have been able to opt for a more noble conclusion.

Spoiler
I literally felt angry when I discovered the guard had killed Eltrys. Here was a good man who almost single-handedly was trying to clean up this town. He could have left, he could have said the hell with it and left them to rot, like that bloke in Dragon Bridge. He stayed though, and kind of hoped against hope that things could be better. The poor man had a child on the way, and they slaughtered him. I almost saw red when I stepped into the temple that last time. I still feel like I'm somehow responsible for his death, as if I could have done more to protect him.

EDIT: I just realized this was in the general discussion forum. I thought it had been moved to spoilers.

Yeah.. the city is full of sick people that give you bounty, even after they had willingly framed you for that murder.

I was never too delved into Eltrys story, but yeah, he was a catalyst for murder. Everytime I revisit that city, I kill a guard or two, just to reflect back on how much they need to pay for their own crimes.

I agree with this. I have played Oblivion so much that I know every square inch of Cyrodiil like the back of my hand and the world seems so much smaller than it did the first time I loaded that game.

I like your style! I assume thought that you give the Imperial Legion the same treatment after what they did to you in the opening sequence?
