I agree
I thrive in MMO environments. The more opportunities I have to compete with other players the better the game is in my opinion. I LOVE competition.
You do realize that you're playing a game, right?
I understand that perhaps your character may feel this way, but that's a personal RP choice, not a gaming mechanic choice.
Not that I have any issue with you having the opinion, I simply think that you would be able to say that to someone in game and decline a duel rather than it being limited to Cyrodil. ;P
perhaps I said it wrong .. my point is the mechanics of dueling are not the same as pvp ..
Dueling is important because guilds need to be able to have tournaments to decide things like Guild champion, etc. Without dueling all you can do is shout names at each other and make rude gestures and that's no good at all...
I would like for their to be dueling in the game. I'm not someone who likes to duel often but it's still nice to have though. Especially when I want to test out new builds and see how well they work against other players.
You think TESO devs will have enough time to listen to the community?
I agree, there needs to be the ability to duel outside of Cyrodiil. It'd feel silly to have to travel to Cyrodiil to duel someone.
I'm guessing you lean towards dueling anywhere? Dueling is available in the game as long as you are in Cyrodiil.
Fighting the opposite faction in Cyrodiil isn't dueling that's just PvP.
I watched/ read almost all the interviews with the devs and they did explicitly say a dueling function would be available. Let me dig it up for you. hold please
If you are talking about this:
then it was later contradicted in that very same Q&A with this statement:
The second quote explicitly says there won't be any kind of "same faction" dueling in this game, anywhere. http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/390321/page/1
You found it right when I found it lol. guess you're right... that svcks. They really need to fix this. So there is no way to duel someone from your own faction... That is just terrible. I hope they implement it prior to shipment or release.

yeah your right that is kinda low blow .. that's pretty messed up tbh
Sigh... I'll still buy game but .... damn ... Here's to hoping.. I'll take a double jack and coke please.
Has it occurred to you guys that the reason they're limiting PvP to the RvRvR in Cyrodiil might be because they don't want to dilute it? They may be concerned that dueling and other same-faction fighting might draw PvP players away from the "main event."
In my opinion their goal should be to let players choose what they do. That is the staple of ES games. Giving less pvp options/choices to players so that they will siphon them into one event doesn't sound very elderscrollesqe. The more options and choices they give to the players the better, especially when it doesn't promote a degraded experience for players that wish not to partake.
And I know that's exactly why they are doing it. I'm not truly upset about there not being any type of dueling in the game. I don't do it much, but it would still be nice to have. But, I don't mind them wanting to focus all the PvP in Cyrodiil because that's their baby.
No. Not even a little bit.
In no way would being able to duel with a buddy or have a bar fight take away from the massive epic pvp area that is Cyrodiil.
Well, I tend to agree, but I believe that "making a good game" has to be above "making something for everyone." If the main premise of the game (the three-faction warfare) doesn't attract (and hold) enough players, then the game falls back on being just another MMO. My personal hope is that ultimately the game will offer all the different experiences that different players want.
Pardon me while I reference WoW.
Duels were implemented from day 1 in vanilla.
BGs were implemented afterwards (not sure the date)
Arenas were implemented around the same time or after BGs.
Dailies in contested territory was implemented a short time after that.
Each facet of pvp combat thrive currently in WoW. Duels, BGs Arenas, Dailies in contested territories, coexist in the same game. Giving players options isn't a negative thing. If you are right and they don't want to implement dueling because of Cyrodill being their baby I hope they reconsider. In a world where the ability to choose how you want to play is encouraged, and seems like the ideology of the devs is based on, I hope they have an epiphany.
Yes, I played WoW for 6 years I know how it went. But, with every addition they added to PvP it did start taking away from other areas. When BGs were released less people were doing World PvP. When Arenas opened even less people were doing World PvP and less stopped playing BGs.
So, yes, adding more and more PvP options do take away from other PvP areas. I'm not saying that dueling would do that (because it wouldn't), but I'm sure they want to focus more on just PvP only in Cyrodiil right now and nothing else.
While I agree with you that the main objective needs to be making a good game I disagree that adding dueling to the game falls under the "making something for everyone" category. Elder scrolls is built on the ideology of having options and choices. If we divide the entirety of TESO into two categories, PVE and PVP one of these options is lacking in choices. The main premise of the game (In my opinion) is not being restrained to any aspect of gameplay. Having only one PVP option does not a good game make.
When it comes to adding a feature like 'Dueling" anywhere there is very little downside (if any) to this feature. Like crafting, exploring, playing the market, PVP in Cyrodill etc isn't mandatory and can be skipped or avoided as well as duels (which is a part of PVP.) In no way does this option affect PVE players or any other type of player. I would be willing to wager that the majority of players would like a dueling option, whether they duel often or not. Dueling is just another intricate option for a well built "good game." Take my poll for a small sample size for reference.
If they do not implement it I hope you are ultimately correct and they will implement it in the future. Here's to hope.
Let's hope they make time before launch. The feature doesn't seem like it would be hard to incorporate on the grand scheme of things.
I will agree that more PvP options divide the player base at any given time but it doesn't take away from the overall PvP experience. The main PvP aspect that suffered throughout the evolution of WoW was world pvp but there were many many... factors that contributed to that. The new dailies in contested areas brought that back to life though, however forced it felt..
