the falmer are snow elves . that's what they have evolved into because they were slaves to the evil dwarves .

but I didn't understand the falmer having human slaves for . ( how does one communicate with a non speaking falmer ? )

Think of it this way:
The snow elves were poisoned and enslaved by the dwemer.
The Dwemer then enslaved the snow elves.
The snow elves, in this condition of bondage, evolved over thousands of years to become what we see in this game and call Falmer.
With this history of bondage now part of their 'cultural heritage', these falmer see it as natural and normal that the strong enslave the weak. Hence, their interest in occasionally taking and keeping slaves.

Snow elves = Falmer
Dwarves are extinct (see Final Report to Trebonius linked above).

This is all that needs to be said.

I think he is referring to the bodyguards in 'The Mind of Madness', so they only exist in a dead man's mind.

Ah, gotcha. I don't think there's any way to prove those are Dwemer, though.

dunmer = dark elves
altmer= high elves
bosmer= wood elves
orsimer= orcs
maormer= tropical elves
dwemer= dwarves
FALMER=SNOW ELVES

snow elves have always been falmer and vice versa... there appearence has changed over the years granted, due to dwemer poisoning them :devil:.

op they are still the same race and still lurk in dwarven ruins. falmer was and still are snow elves.

Hold on there, partner. I thought it had been established that the Dwemer were no shorter than men? And anyway, don't these guys remain seated during that scene anyway (at least until... you know)?

Dwemer were about the same height as Altmer. :|

They got the nickname "Dwarves" from giants.

Except that Dwemer aren't short. They're average human size, as can be seen in the Tribunal expansion to Morrowind (we encountered a Dwemer ghost).

Agreed on the nickname, but where did you get the info about them being as tall as Altmer? High elves are the tallest of mer, I've always assumed Dwemer would be somewhere in the middle - Dunmer-sized, maybe?

From the Wikia:
The Dwemer are often referred to as "Dwarves" in western cultures, although they were no shorter than a human and the name seems to have been derived from a supposed encounter with giants who saw the Dwemer as short.

From the UESP:
As previously mentioned, the Dwemer were no shorter than any other elven race, despite being classically described as such. Their physical appearance is hard to judge, as http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Yagrum_Bagarn lives bloated and deformed by http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Corprus, and the only other visual examples come from sculptures and http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Undead#Dwarven_Spectres found in their ruined dwellings. It can be deduced, however, that long beards were popular amongst the lost elves, and they preferred heavy metal armors and robes. Their remaining features could be described similarly to that of the other elven races, as no specific information exists.

From the Imperial Library:
The Dwemer of Tamriel, also known as the Dwarves, were a reclusive Elven Clan who lived in Morrowind during the first era. Although they had long bushy beards, they were not short, stubby, Tolkein Dwarves. [...] Dwemer were approximately the same height as humans and other elves.

...

Dwemer is the real (Elven) name for the Dwarves. It is pronounced: DWAY-mare. Some translations are "Short Folk", "Smart Folk" and, what is probably the best translation, "Deep Folk". Probably "Deep" as in "intelligent and multi-levelled" as opposed to a reference to some kind of physical depth.
The name "Dwarves" is used mostly by non-Elven races and has misguiding connotations. There have been rumors that the name "Dwarves" was given by the Giants that lived in Morrowind when the Dwemer first lived there. Thus (possibly) the confusion. A variation on the rumor suggests that the ancestors of Men and Mer, described as the "titantic" Ehlnofey (also known as the Earthbones), named the Dwemer. In this model, the name is actually a play on words, implying both shortness (relative to the "titanic" Ehlnofey), and intelligence. Both of these possibilities introduce what I view as possible factual inconsistencies that are beyond the scope of this guide, but they are still possible.
The most referenced possibility is that "Dwarf" is simply mistranslation of Dwemer, and that it's proper use is in the "Deep Folk" sense, but that Dwe was mistranslated by humans into "Short". Thus "Short Folk", or Dwarves.

Is there maormer in the game? And couldn't there be a small group of snow elves that weren't enslaved and have been living in hiding and haven't been affected and look like normal elves?

you forget that beth butchers lore and makes changes to the mechanics with new technology. Dwemer were average size in older games but thats probably due to problems shrinking them and making interactions with the world smooth.

Dwemer were intended to be short, the proof is in the tiny chairs and low beds found in dwemer ruins

For those who want to play Skyrim as a Falmer. Instructions are as follows:-

1. Create Dark Elf character.
2. Turn off monitor.
3. Turn volume to max so you can hear a fly fart at 500 yards.
4. Play Skyrim using sound only.
