Elven Supremacy

Post » Sat Sep 14, 2013 10:45 am

It's known to some how much I love to discuss this topic so:

Do you think it will be prevalent in TESO? By which races? Is there historical significance behind why they might in this MMO?

How extreme do you think it will be; to what extreme will it be taken to? Will it just be the NPCs or will the players join in on it. Or will the players create the only existing elven supremacy in the game?

Personally I don't see the Bosmer being supremacists, while the Altmer will have the greatest form of it. I see the Dunmer being somewhat humble, and only select elites will take any sort of extreme form like the Altmer. Let's face it, anyone who plays as a High Elf probably will feel the same way as the Aldmeri in Skyrim do. We've already seen plenty of it on this forum, and I think the players will be highly chaotic in these matters when TESO comes out.

Aren't all Mer elves? Falmer = snow elves, Orismer = ugly elves.. they're all elves.

I think his intent is to distinguish the mer from typical fantasy tropes regarding elves, because what makes a mer in TES does not necessarily make an elf in other settings, and because the connotations and history associated with mer is far more correct than... Nordic? Colovian? Where DOES the word "elf" originate in the ES world anyway? But it's more accurate and correct to use "mer" and "merrish" than "elf" and "elven."

To be honest, I'm half tempted to make an Altmer just to be one of the 'villains'.

I'm making an Altmer. I don't think of them as villains. I think of them of trying to do whats best for Tamriel in their opinion. In their opinion, their experience gives them better ability to lead. I understand this is disputed and all, but Altmer want to rule because they think humans are incapable and warmongering.

To be honest, I simply don't see much of a difference between the Altmer and the Nazi's when it comes to their philosophies. The Altmer think they're superior because they were on Tamriel first. The Nazi's thought they were superior, I even heard it said once in a show that had Nazi's that their ancestors hunted on those lands before others came. Anyways, that's just how I feel. I'm against such bigoted people in the real world but when it comes to fantasy like movies and video games, I kind of love watching the bad guy and sometimes in games I like to play the bad guy.

Being honest, the Altmer always have (and always will) want to rule because it allows them to break the foundations of the Mundus and crumble the Lorkhanite Trickery that is Convention, returning to the days before Time was solidified/sacrificed/killed to become linear. Or at least, this is the closest to a united racial agenda as can be ascribed to the Altmer - there are, of course, dissenting opinions. Some view the Mundus not as a prison for all but as a prison for each individual, which is an important distinction, and wish to transcend it individually. These Altmer are probably closer to their Dunmer once-kin than most, though there is still the sticking distinction between viewing the Mundus as a prison vs. a challenge/gift, not to mention both think the other wrong-headed in their pursuit of transcendance.

But to say that the Altmer only want what's best for Tamriel is only true if you're an Altmer or otherwise agree with their views, because in Altmeri eyes, what's best for Tamriel is that Tamriel cease to be.

That actually reminded me of a blond joke I heard as a kid. How do you kill a blonde? Put a scratch and sniff sticker at the bottom of a pool.

Well all my "main" chars in previous elder scroll games were archer types. I don't think this time will be different. I think there will be alot of elves running around.
Don't forget Nords. People whe were new to Elder scrolls and have only played skyrim will prob have a prefference to Nords...

They call themselves Mer, and humans and other peoples tend to call them elves as a kind of derogatory term. Any self-respecting Elvish Supremacist wouldn't call himself an elf or an Elven Supremacist. He would call hisself a Merrish Supremicist or Mer Supremacist.

As far as where elf came from? Well i actually started a thread on it in the lore forum. So far we came to conclusion that it was a distortion of Elhnofey. Where it slowly, overtime, was corrupted into Elf and used to describe the Mer by the Nedes and other species.

Btw, Altmer are not the only bigoted racists in Tamriel. The Nords are pretty far up there. I mean they did try to exterminate a group of Mer. How the Altmer act is childs-play in comparison. The Nords sound more like Nazi's to me.

Didn't the falmer try to exterminate the nords first? Or are you referring to the plot of one of the Skyrim DLCs (which I have not played)?

Even in Seyda Neen (Morrowind), passing by the Altmer commoner in rags saying "I suppose it is my duty to help those less fortunate than myself," the Altmer have always thought they were better than everyone else.

The Dunmer, on the other hand, don't. They just don't want to have anything to do with Outlanders that might taint the purity of their bloodlines.

But they are referred by both Mer and Elf in the games. If a person wants to use one name over the other then fine, but you don't have the right to impose it on others.

Oh, there will be plenty of 'Merish' supremacy. Both Altmer and Dunmer think very highly of themselves. The only faction that might not have this problem is the Daggerfall Covenant, and that's because Orcs just don't give a crap. Merish supremacy isn't that prevalent among the Bosmer, but that's because they don't have to proclaim how much better they are than everyone else. They just know it.

To those saying that the Dunmer don't think highly of themselves, pay more attention to the Comona Tong, the Telvanni, and pretty much any Dunmer associated with the Temple. They'll state very clearly how much better they are than everyone else. Even in Skyrim, you've got Neloth saying "The lesser races call us 'Dark Elves.'"
