ESO on Consoles and Delayed

Post » Tue Jun 11, 2013 12:12 pm

This has turned me from a guaranteed sale to a very unlikely purchaser. I'm upset because I thought that the MMO was Zenimax's nod to the pc market while the single player games were clearly for consoles. Now, as a PC player, I'll have to deal with the following problems:

  • split player base
  • every design decision weighed by how it will perform on a console
  • lousy graphics
  • slow patch/update cycle
  • bad UI (designed for controller)

Look, I know the new consoles are pretty decent systems by today's standards, but they'll be outpaced by the average PC within a year. How long do you want the MMO to last? Hopefully you have a goal like 10 years. Well, thanks to catering to consoles, you can forget about graphic updates down the line. I could go on and on, but the PC people know what I'm talking about. This is a bit of a slap in the face, and to top it off, we get to wait another 6 months while they finish the ports to the consoles, and the UI/Interface redesign that will make me hate my keyboard and mouse.

Cheers.

Agreed on everything except the graphics, the new consoles have impressive strength, and I'm deeply scared about the UI and the text chat capabilities. If this game ends up like defiance nobody will talk to eachother, the dialogue box is big enough for like 2 lines of text, and everybody will be playing alone.

Edit: And just saying, the consoles are already outclassed by super high end PCs, but they are still fantastic in strength.

They UI won't be a problem because it will be mod able on PC.

Which is probably why they they put it in, in the first place so that they don't have to worry about it and so that the community can do the work for them.

The game has been in development for the PC for the past 5+ years. People really think they are going to start all over and simply port a console version to the PC? lol ok.

I'm a console player, and I agree with your frustration. The last thing an MMO needs is a split player base; just look at Defiance, it's a "shining" example of how that turns out..

You guys need to understand this game was being developed FOR the PC first and foremost, and as such they will make it as best as they can for the PC.

And then downgrade the console versions, which will NOT affect the PC Version.

Don't know why you guys get so upset over stuff like this. You think just because it's on consoles they're going to remove half the game.

With the way it is being developed, there will be no "downgrading".

no.

they could have easily had a console version planned all along. they tested the pc market decided it wasn't big enough, and now they confirming console versions. im actually kind of relieved. it wasn't shaping up to be a very good mmo. they've now told us that it is more of a multi-player ES game, and it's coming to consoles. I can now invest in a ps4 and have more to people to play with then if it was only on pc.

TES games have been available for consoles for the passed 10 years for 3/5 of their games...

Why the [censored] would they not put ESO on consoles?

I kinda predicted this, new era of multiplatform MMOs is coming. Question is if they're gonna fill up the MMO-space with lots of crappy MMOs or then quality stuff. I predict first one. Big publishers start to make couple MMOs instead of one big one etc.

It's also never been easier because of the architecture MS and Sony are using which is similar to a PC making it easier to port

Not ported no, but altered yes. It is a legit fear. I do not believe for one second as I have absolutely no faith in developers these days, that they will running 2 completely different versions of the game with drastic differences. They will do their very best I believe to make the games as identical as possible and that means going to the least common denominator. Well the console is all aspects will have the least common denominator, making a menu system that is better with controllers but less appealing with mouse and keyboard for example. For me its more than just that, its the console market as a whole and its simplicity. There were things I already fear about this game but I was giving it the benefit of the doubt, this just adds to it.

The only [censored] part about it being crossplatform is the PC players are going to suffer the [censored] ironclad grip of sony and microsoft delaying patches and having their grubby fingers in the game. My faith in this product was just slashed by about 85%. I'll still buy it because its TES and I'll get atleast a few months out of it, but I no longer expect anything more from the game. Sadtimes for anyone who was expecting DAOC, since we're probably getting GW instead. Never thought I'd say this but I hope they're atleast trying to keep up with games like FFXIV with this move, because that will end up being a real MMO atleast.

The absolute worst part though, in my eyes atleast, is that they lied to us. Lying to us before the game is even out is the stupidest thing you can do. We were told PC/Mac only, and what, a week or two later we hear otherwise? We had to get it from the [censored] PS4 Spokesperson to boot. Shameful.

And how are console players going to type in chat during a pug raid or pvp ? MMO's need a keyboard and mouse support I also hate players who constantly have open mics because I don't want to hear their kids screaming or listen to them eat crisps in my ear. Consoles can't support the numbers of players on screen without doing something drastic just got to look at Defiance and see how bad it is on the PC to see that console and PC's can not be on the same level of playing field. After 20 players on screen other players will vanish from sight as the game engine can not cope because it was built around old technology on the console.

Also Microsoft will want timed exclsusives like they did with Skyrim can you all see how bad this is going to be on expansions and DLC in the future ?

Sorry but the one fact you are completely failing to point out is that the PS4 is standard to every single person who purchases one.

The PC fails massively at competing against the new consoles for a number of reasons.

  • The price point of $399
  • The simplicity and ease of use to the average gamer. Plug it in and play it. End of story.
  • Developers know 'exactly' how far they can push the boundaries of their game because its exactly the same platform where PC owners vary massively.
  • From a marketing perspective, Sony will also utilise their marketing clout to push games. PCs dont have one.
  • The user base of consoles is pretty impressive, sure the PC has too but on a console the user base is pathetically easy to find in comparison.
  • Hackers, gold sellers and cheats. Common on PCs, nowhere near as common on console systems as you risk losing your one connection with the multiplayer world.

You state crap graphics but that isn't true at all, how much do you think devs dumb down their game to make it work on a broad amount of PC specs? The PS4 (or Xbox One) is a pretty impressive platform for a gamer, 'especially' at $399! You also mention that the game will be 'weighed down' by decisions made to work on a console. If there is any weighing down its for the average PC owner who can't afford or simply won't upgrade their system every 6 months. The next gen consoles are in the high spec range. The patch or update cycle was pretty quick on xbox live even with the hoops they have to jump through. Infact much of the content was out on the 360 before the PC. You say bad UI designed for controller, I say that Skyrim was more enjoyable on the 360 than it was on the PC for that 'exact' reason. The controller just felt better. Even Todd Howard from Bethesda had said as much. Sure this is an MMO blah, blah, blah but one thing they have stated from day one is that they are making a great 'game' first and foremost. So basically, I think your points are completely wrong except for the split playerbase and that doesn't bother me at all, infact its a great thing as hackers and cheats are infinitely more widespread on PCs so the console guys will definitely be on more of a level playing field than PC players.

he got the ui design point right though. it was crap in skyrim on pc because it was designed for console. that's what he (and us pc gamers don't want to see). but it will be moddable so it's whatever.

Last I checked there was no release date only an estimate of 2013. If you take that as a release date, nearly every game gets delayed. It is pointless to be upset by a delay, particularly a MMO that is delayed.

Yep I agree, I initially purchased the xbox360 version and PC version a week after. After playing the console version and enjoying it a lot I played the PC and hated the UI because it was designed around the console. Still, at the end of the day, playing on a controller for me was pretty good, it just worked. Many PC enthusiats are going to scream, rant and rave because thats just what they do when you mention console. Me? I am a gamer, as long as its entertaining and good value for money, I'm happy.

I played FFXI on PS2 for a few years, it shared MMO status with PC (still does, with a sub and all). You just plug a keyboard and mouse into the USB ports and you're basically using a dumbed down PC. That same experience with FFXI is what has me worried about this though.
