Expansion over DLC

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 6:09 pm

This is just a thought I have been pondering over, but would you people find it more prudent to a game company to release expansions rather than DLC's so there would be more incentive to buy it rather than just pirating it?
I have never seen the reasoning to buy a DLC and I never have bought one, but I would defiantly be more supportive for a gaming company if they would release an expansion with a lot of content and new quests and lands rather than some cheap quickly made DLC.
So the question is, would you be more willing to buy expansions rather than a large amount of 1 buck DLC's?

Why do people keep using that word? I do not think it means what you think it means.

Anyways the DLC for Skyrim is planned to be closer to expansion material than regular DLC. Not quite as big as SI but probably closer to Tribunal.

You have a good point. But as long as all of the DL content together would equal the same price as a full expansion with all of that content in it, i guess it doesn't matter. It gives the player the option to choose what DLC they want. But typically... real fans want all of the content, so it's probably pointlss to break it up and sell it for $5 or $10 here and there. i sure hope Bethesda doesn't overprice DLC.... Skyrim is worth the $60 because, well it's another Elder Scrolls game. We'll just have to see.

I agree with OP, bigtime, haven't bought any DLC of this small package kind, though I always buy expansions for games I enjoy, it's a shame expansions have died out really. I don't get any pleasure of playing a 3 hour content pack, it's just pointless

Oh and no, waiting and then buying a bunch of dlcs at once isn't the same as an expansion, seeing as they'll still be small cells of content and not an entire focused not area with actual stuff to explore

You mean the word downloadable content?
I mean i see it as a more small time content addition similar to a mod adding an extra village or something similar, rather that something more large scale like SI which I would see as an expansion.

Expansions. DLC is okay, but rarely does it add much in the way of real game-time. Besides which, DLC for a game like this may not turn out too well.

This sounds really good actually, but another thing about DLC they have a much higher chance of being pirated than expansions or at least fewer people would buy DLC's and rather pirate them.
That is at least what I have noticed, I'm not sure about the ratio.

No, I meant the word "defiantly". The first time I saw this word being used in this context I thought it was a simple mistake but now I'm starting to think people are doing it just to be contrary.

I'd prefer more content less frequently over more frequent DLC's with less content. Using Dragon age : origins as an example some of there DLC's were worth it whereas some of them were just extra junk. However I'd also like to see full expansions in the future and i'd gladly dish out another $60 for an expansion so long as it extends the story past the end of the game.

It's from clicking the wrong word in the spell checker context menu.

Expansions are imo better than DLC. Especially as most DLC are download only (no CD/DVD means no DLC for me).

As long as the content matches the price, I'd consider buying both types.

I'd like a mix.

DLC so I don't have to wait too long for new content, Expansions, because I want big amounts of content.

DLC or expansion, I think there is a very good chance none of them will hit retail stores as a physical copy. Alot of expansions lately have been exclusively digitally distributed, and Shivering Isles has been released over 4 years ago. Alot has changed since then. . So chance is, you're out of luck either way.

I prefer expansions DLC is a waste of money. I bought all for Fallout 3 and they only brought be about 30 mins of gameplay each. Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine game me over 80 hours(estimate) of game play. Didn't bother with FNV DLC since its the same model. If the DLC is like Fallout for Skyrim I'm not going to bother until GOTY, if its like shivering isles i will get in on day 1.

Most people that say things like this usually buy the game at release anyway.

But hey, if you pull it off, way to stick it to the man.

Exactly. DLC is downloadable content. Thus, an expansion pack can be DLC as well. It is how content is delivered, it does not define what the content is.

In principle, though, i agree that expansions are usually better than smaller bits and pieces of content that is delivered...... like Horse Armor vs. Shivering Isles. :)

Two well done expansions > 12 minor DLC.
