Favorite things about Arx Fatalis?

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 10:35 am

My favorite bit of Arx was probably listening to how the goblins spoke, but I liked a lot of the game. I loved the freedom, and especially stealing from everyone!

I made a second playthrough of Arx a few months before Skyrim released, but the darn game glitched and now I can't continue. For some reason, acquiring Krahoz and Zohark still won't allow me to progress further in the game. Oh well..

I'm very curious about this game. I'm a huge fan of rpg-s released in mid-nineties - early two thousands. It seems to have a very unique setting and I'm intrigued by the screenshots.
Problem is, I tried this game a few years ago and I remember I just couldn't get over the controls. And the magic system... while cool in theory, I remember it was harder to cast spells in this game than it is in real life.

Been thinking about giving this game another chance but haven't found the motivation to buy it just yet...

if you like deus ex, system shock 2, morrowind, vampire bloodlines or in fact any first person rpg then this is the game for you. (well its the game for everyone they just dont know it) this is the only inspiration you need.
the controls on xbox are much more accesible without any dumbing down, except the spell casting is not as cool. but if you dont have an xbox then just get on with it. the more you play the easier the controls will be.

nah real life no good, cant get away with killing things and its wrong, cant upgrade myself with cybernetic implants or augs(yet), cant go to space or a fantasy world, cant cast magic, cant steal loot, cant reload if you die.... at least theres skills and attributes in real life....

i wanna make a epic first person rpg. good luck with your exam!

admittedly ive never played planescape torment. apparently the gameplay is crap and its all about the story, probably not my thing but i never know until i play it. but the reason i like dx and ss2 ect is mainly because of the gameplay. then the fantastic stories, levels, music, immersion ect come after in my priority list and all equal. but still are VERY important! but yeah gameplay comes first for me.... but ive heard it mentioned many times so i think ill do a little research.

Yeah, and not to mention it's multiplayer only.

Tehee, this is where I disagree with you. For me the most important thing about games is the atmosphere and the story. The atmosphere is the first thing that svcks me into games like dx or bloodlines. If the story and atmosphere is good, I can forgive many flaws in gameplay. However, if I don't feel the atmosphere or don't care about the story, then I can't force myself to finish the game (Sadly, that's the case with 99% of modern shooters).

I agree, Planescape really is all about story. I like how people say it's "The best book they've ever played". Describes this dialogue-heavy game perfectly. It's sad how the gameplay part suffered because of it. Still, if you ever want to play a game in a very unique and memorable setting and has a very great story, I recommend you to check it out.

As for Arx Fatalis, when I tried it waaay back in 2005-ish, I was 15-16 years old, and probably wasn't mature enough to stick with the game. At that time I only cared about "pwning n00bs" in counter-strike. I think I will give the game a shot at the end of the month.

nah story and atmosphere are VERY important to me too. everything is very important, but gameplay first. if i wanted story only id read a book, if i wanted graphics and story id watch a film, no i want everything rolled into one around complex gameplay. GAMEplay is the whole point of a GAME is it not? that is why i love LGS games and games inspired by LGS, they have everything to my satisfaction in all fields, in a perfect way its almost scary.

its a shame that LGS wasnt financially successful, because the games they would be serving up now omg! but then again it was probably the struggle they went through that pushed them to make a game as awesome as system shock 2, i dont know, but still LGS design principles are unparalleled, with FP/RPGs anyway. ive never played thier other games. i was way too young at the time. but a golfing game or flight simulator is not my thing anyway, unless they were rpg hybrids ha that would be interesting. would be cool if they all got back together through arkane or something.
