Female option?

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 11:57 pm

Protagonist set, no female option. This is not Skyrim and you shouldn't expect too much role-playing. In fact expect minimal. People are really getting picky with their involvement in a game's story.

The thing about Bethesda RPGs is that the start of each one has to start out in such a way that the player's character can be totally neutral. A clean slate. Dishonored, on the other hand, is the story of a very specific character named "Corvo" who is anything but neutral.

You play Corvo in the game... he's male 100% of the time.

I love how it's 100% of the time :P would be worried if it were only 95% of the time. I don't mind playing as a male character since most hero's in games are male and only a few RPG's let you change this! sixist!!! sixist!!!! xD

Since most strictly female video game characters are over endowed and bisixual so they still sell to men (boys) I'm actually pretty happy with male characters.

It's not a Btthesda RPG though. It's an Arkane action/adventure game. Big difference. From what leaks we have story wise, I tihnk they can do a lot of things with this. We might have another Thief 2 or Deus Ex on our hands.

This IS a bethesda action stealth game, It's published by bethesda, the fact that this is the bethesda forums proves it. You do know there are 2 bethesdas 1. bethesda game studios 2. bethesda softworks. This is a bethesda softworks game, made by arkane, it seems to have rpg elements ergo it's a bethesda RPG

My reaction as well. All the individual facts are right, but the conclusion is mind-boggling.

I understand English perfectly well.

CoD has RPG elements. Does that make it an RPG? Just because Dishonored is published by Bethesda, doesn't mean it will be anything like games Bethesda's development arm has made. Look at Brink, Call of Cthulhu, etc.

Where have I said "it'll be like other beth games"?

its when you mentioned this below

This IS a bethesda action stealth game, It's published by bethesda, the fact that this is the bethesda forums proves it............ This is a bethesda softworks game, made by arkane, it seems to have rpg elements ergo it's a bethesda RPG

if you're meaning something else, i think it did not come across well. To me, it does sound as if you're saying dishonored is published by bethesda therefore, dishonored = like other bethesda RPG.

As a fan of Deus Ex and Thief, as well as the steam punk genre, I find Dishonored to be very intriguing.

But for the love of all that's not-so-holy, why must I once again play a godverdomme, MALE PROTAGONIST!!!!?????

Game after game after game it's always dude, dude, dude, dude, DUDE!

Seriously, is the entire video game industry going to collapse on itself if just one developer goes out on a limb and creates a relate-able, believable FEMALE protagonist?

And don't give me this crap about the industry simply pandering to their demographic. Of course the majority of gamers are male. Women never see themselves represented in video games! (Unless, of course, we're being sixually objectified to the point of absurdity, which is incredibly insulting for us.)

I will purchase Dishonored and hope that I can enjoy what it has to offer, despite being forced to inhabit the avatar of yet another ugly, grizzled guy. Because apparently the male ego is incapable of considering anything other than a reflection of itself.

Leslee

PS I live just down the street from your Austin studio. I bet you've got all of 2 women working there, don't you?

You are being 'forced to inhabit the avatar of yet another ugly, grizzled guy' in this case because the story is built upon that character. Calm down. If you wish to complain about the sixual discrepancies which, undoubtedly and regrettably, exist in this industry, fine. But why complain here? Why complain about Dishonored? Dishonored is a game about a man trying to find the people responsible for the death of his ward, his friend, his Empress and quite possibly his lover. That is a crucial dynamic that has, whether you would like to admit it or not, significant narrative value. Are you so incapable of accepting a legitimate male protagonist?

The video game as a story-telling device is still an emerging concept. Be patient. I have little doubt that it will mature in time. And be calm. Angry tyrades about the injustice inherent in the system won't get you anywhere. You sound absurd when you make wild claims like 'I bet you've got all of 2 women working there.'

You may be able to posses any woman you like and hence play as her. Morally upstanding women of course, none of those filthy prosttutes.

Ah yes, the condescending and vaguely patronizing response: "Shut up, silly hysterical woman. Yes, your complaints may be valid, but we don't want to hear about them and you sound absurd expressing them. Of course, the story is about a man. How could it possibly be otherwise?"

I agree with SeriousFace that you are being a bit overbearing on the subject, but it's totally true there are extremely few worthwhile games with female protagonists as you say, if you haven't already played it Mirrors Edge is one of the few really quite good ones though. Also though I don't really know where would be the right place for discussing this, I don't think it's here.

It's true that far fewer games have a female protagonist, but they do exist. In fact Bethesda Softworks, the publisher of Dishonored, has published at least one where you play as a female character.

seriously? I'm a girl and yes, sometimes it bothers me a bit that I can't choose to play as female but when it's story based like this games, or God of War or Alan Wake or whatnot that got released over the years, then I don't mind
When it's looking to be a great game and the trailer gets to me like the one for Dishonored did, I seriously don't give a damn. It's his story and I can't wait to play it.

But there's some pretty great ones, too. Portal 2 was definitely one of my favorite games last year, and that's a female protagonist. It's great to see more leading ladies in the world of entertainment -- Chell, Liara, Katniss and Lisbeth -- to name a few.

Leslee, I definitely understand where you're coming from, but the decision by Arkane's creative team was based around Corvo being a male character. The primary customization in Dishonored is the spiritual powers you can select.
