Female option?

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 3:50 am

So the trailer came out, and it's amazing!

But what I'm hoping to know before I place in a preorder is whether or not this game will follow the same route as TES and Fallout, and will include a female option for the protagonist; being able to choose has been a big part of why I choose Bethesda games over others who don't.

From my understanding the game doesn't involve character creation, it's more like Mirror's Edge or Thief where you're given an entirely pre-made character.

It's worth noting that Dishonored is developed by Arkane, not Bethesda Game Studios.

I always think that more choice is better in games and this option would be nice but it's not a dealbreaker for me and looking at the video they already released it looks like that the main character is already decided (guy in the cell)

There's a give and take - the more choice you give players the fewer hooks the developers get to work with. BGS's game's give you extensive customization options, but this means there are few solid details about your character that they can work into questlines or NPC interactions. On the opposite side, because Mirror's Edge has a fully defined character with no customization they could give Faith full voice acting, a story that involves her family, and animated cut scenes.

Mass Effect is a good example of a game in the middle of this continuous: while you can customize your gender, class, and appearance you are required to be a human named Sheppard with a military background. However the set details allowed Bioware to give your character a voice and allowed people to easily refer to you and your history. Of course if you want to play a Turian you're out of luck.

The trailer looks absolutely amazing. I don't play assassins or as a male but Dishonored looks great and has many things I would have liked, such as playing in first person, the special abilities and weapons. I hope Arkane has great success with the game!

you also have the likes of saints row the third that has seven voice options 3 male 3 female and a zombie but I guess like you say there's give and take I could have done with just 2 voices if it meant fleshing out the rest of the game

there is only one guy which is the main guy but that allows Arkane to go into more depth with Dishonored cause if there was customization then yeah what the other guys are saying it would be as good. But i do hope you get to customize your outfit ........... probably wont but still that be cool

Well, Bethesda are only the publishers, Arkane studios are the ones making this game. And seeing as the game seem to be focused a lot around a specific story my guess is that you won't have character creation, but you will have different ways of playing though. Kind of like Dark Messiah.

You play Corvo in the game... he's male 100% of the time.

This is (as far as I know) a way more story driven game than most Bethesda games, and its much easier to make a story around one specfic person.

By "Bethesda Games" I assume you mean those developed by Bethesda Game Studios? That is, the Elder Scrolls series and Fallout 3. Dishonored is being developed by Arkane and it isn't the first game Bethesda Softworks has published that had a set protagonist.

So the game could be great and have fantastic gameplay, but if there's no option to play as a girl, it's worth less than a game that gives you that option?

Same here.
Shralla said what I was thinking. Just because you can't choose your gender doesn't make it any less of a great game

I just watched the trailer and it looks impressive. Another for the wish list for when I get my new PC :)

i have to say, it would be a great option to have char customization, but it sort of (as said, sort of nullifies a "past-history", which is a great element to this game (as seen in the elder scrolls games, the main protagonist has next to no past history and is only ever known by his title, i,e, "Hero Of Kvatch" or "Dragonoborn" though it is possible to work around it, personally, i would like to see such an option in a sequel.... i always wanted assassins creed with customization XD :P

"No character creation no thanks" is my motto these days id feel more inclined if I could make my own Outsider like my Dragon Born but it still doenst make any less a game il think il pick it up used or when its drops in price range.

I wonder how set this role is going to be as far we know the only thing for certain is the body guard of the empress, I mean if Bioware can do it with shepard who was mainly male focused in advertisemant and trailers prior Mass effect 3 and femshep became more popular than her male counterpart ,I don't see why not if revenge is going to be the main focus of this game story I don't see any real major plot holes for our Hero/Heroine other than a few different spoken words of dialogue.

Really? That's a joke. You're seriously going to buy the game used, not giving the developers any money, just because you can't design the appearance of your character in a first-person game?

Well that still makes him a eunuch, which is still technically a man.

Not that you'd be able to, even if you wanted to. Huzzah for 1st person perspective! For me, it really adds to (gah) immersion when I'm not watching a 3D model perform my actions on the screen.

"The truth is" that in this world and time, when you get Dishonored and put in jail, you will as female or male, be trapped inside a ugly man's body, so even when you escape, you have to stay in that ugly man's body, right. And this is why you are going after these guys that have the key to unlock the door on this ugly man's body, yeah.

So you can perfectly role play as female in this game, imagination is your limit!

Objectively speaking, Corvo seems to be a slightly-above-average-looking person.

I know. He looks like the guy that plays Ned Stark in the Game of Thrones TV serie and he is a pretty awesome guy, a good guy. So this is a good thing. (That is what I think, at least. Other eyes may see it differently but I think he look pretty similar in many ways.)
