Fighting corruption in Riften?

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 12:18 pm

First thing I noticed when coming to Riften is the guards asking money from me, and many people talking about corruption. It smells like a quest - and a quest I want to play.

But I can't seem to find the entry to that quest. There's dozens of mini-quests, but they do not seem to be concerned with corruption.

Any hints?

Yup, that's all there is. You can join the Thieves Guild to help bolster the corruption, or... nothing. There's nothing else.

Yeah I get the feeling Riften (among many things) was left unfinished. Everyone in the city talks about how terrible the Thieves Guild is and how it's a scourge on thee city but your only option is to join and rebuild it or ignore it. Seems like it should be different like it is with the DB.

I found it stupid your only option is to join the criminals, not fight them.

You have failed me Bethesda. More than you know. :sadvaultboy:

I think there should've been a quest named "Destroy the Thieves Guild!"
Riften is full of morons, I think it would be appropriate to tag along with Mjoll and put them down.

To be fair, you CAN wipe out the Skooma trade and kill a bunch of thieves in the Ratway.

That feels almost like pouring a few cups of water on a house fire, though.

You also can't touch Maven Black Briar or the Thieves Guild.

What's worse is, if you side with the Imperials, she will become Jarl.

Yeah but the thieves you kill in the ratway aren't TG.thieves, just general [censored] bags.

Yeah, I think there's a humorous bit of subtext to the non-Thieves Guild game that the Thieves Guild actually isn't responsible for 50% of the crime of the city even. Riften is just a wretched hive of villainy in general and everyone just blames the Thieves Guild for stuff that goes wrong.

I confess, I kind of laughed when I finished the Skooma trade mission and the final mission was attacking a wolf fighting ring.

Seriously, guys?

The big threat to Riften is a bunch of redneck dogfighting ring runners with a meth lab? Is Riften in Kentucky? (where I live)

I'm pretty sure that, despite appearances, Jarl Laila is in Maven's pocket, so she's not interested in truly cleaning up Riften. She is interested, however, in looking like she is trying to clean up Riften.

I got the impression it was more a complete lack of interest in her hold. Of course, I was honestly surprised she cared enough to reward me rather than say, "There is no wolf fighting or Skooma in Riften."

Maybe it's just all her advisers who are in Maven's pocket, then. If you stand around and listen to how they talk to her, it's obvious they're trying to keep her from knowing about all that's really going on. The woman lives in a bubble.

Oh yeah, I figured it was the Steward because the Jarl says, she more or less takes care of everything.

In Riften you cannot fight, corruption you can only help boosting it!

Spoiler
On a side note, does anybody knows where the old jarl, her steward and one of the sones go once Maven becomes Jarl of the town?
Only the pro-imperial son of the old Jar is still around. I checked the prison but they're not there.

Well if you do the Stormcloak side all of thee misplaced royalty sit in a room in the basemant of the Blue Palace, and they all [censored] talk me when I go in there which made me lol. So maybe if you're Imperial all the replaced royalty go to somewhere in Winterhold?

Yeah that's the situation. Winterhold or Solitude... Which makes it odd that once you conquer those cities those Jarls still hang around...

You can wipe out 60% of the Thieves Guild legitimately. You can kill Dirge in the main pub, and then have the other members chase you to the secret closet, at which point hit them into the door and they open it. Once you go inside the Thieves Guild proper, you can kill everyone in there except for Mercer. It has no impact on anything, and you can still join the Thieves Guild - but it let my "white knight" type of character feel like she struck a serious blow against them.

beth certainly sets the stage to be able to clean up riften, but no, it's nothing but a tease. i really dislike the leaders (brynjolf, vex, delvin, obviously mercer and maven) and would love to put them down. the only ones i feel some sympathy for are sapphire and the guy who was a bandit (he's still a dirtbag, but at least had a small bit of honor). not to mention all the people's lives you ruin during the course of the guild quests and side jobs. the TG really is a terrible bunch of people.

i guess by doing nothing, the curse will never be lifted and the TG will fade away, but i want resolution in my game. my number one complaint with skyrim is the lack of diversity in how to finish questlines and the TG is a perfect example.

I got a lot of laughs seeing all eur Jarls in their fancy clothes sitting in that dumpy room. Took me a minute to figure out all that was going on. Then most of them told me how I was a traitor and they wanted to kill me, good times!
