My final solution for ending the Rage slideshow

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 4:43 am

It's running perfectly on my system:

C2D E8400 @ 4,2GHz
4096MB DDR2
Radeon 5850
Windows 7 x64

Thanks to user "Mixis" topic in this Forum, i've tried different Catalyst driver versions:

Catalyst 11.10 (Preview) - Slideshow
Catalyst 11.9 (Rage performance) - Slideshow
Catalyst 11.9 - Running fast but massive errors on screen
Catalyst 11.8 - Very Slow
Catalyst 11.7 - Crash!
Catalyst 11.6 - No, it can't be. It just...works

With Catalyst driver 11.6 the 100% CPU usage that Rage consumed before, drops down to a normal working range. I can now play with the highest resolution and with any "rageconfig.cfg" setting.

Here is what you have to try:

- Install Catalyst Driver Version 11.6 (or just use "atioglxx.dll" from 11.6 and copy it to the Rage directory for use with any newer Catalyst driver)
- Make sure that "OpenGL Triple Buffering" in Catalyst Control Center is deactivated or Rage will crash !!!
- Play... there is no need to create a rageconfig.cfg or an id software folder or anything else i've tried for hours and hours

Good luck!

Update:

Running so far, my system makes between 20 - 35 FPS with maximum detail options. Sometimes I have to restart because it crashes on level change. We have to wait for updates but at least we can play.

I am going to try it your way, and if it works, I'll post my system and what I have did step by step.

Can you link me to the ati dll thingy? Also is your FPS smooth? i tried 11.6 before and while it fixed the freezing and the game ran with AI On , It was 15-25 FPS , On newest driver i get 45-60 FPS easily but if AI is on it crashes on start and if its off i get epic square textures :(

IT IS WORKING! YEAH! Finally A fix from a user :P

here is the link. http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/11/Pages/radeon.aspx?os=Windows%20XP%20-%20Professional/Home&rev=11.6
It is working with 1776x1000 (windowed) no antialiasing for around 20 - 25 FPS (it's because my computer is not that powerfull) No texture bugs, (but the texture loading is a bit slow, but not annoying at all after all we have been through)
Catalist is turned on and everything back, no CFG no star options.

Wait a sec...I saw something bad. I saw some artifacts when I changed the resolution from 1920x1080 to 1280x720

Terrible I would hate to have to roll back that far, I am with you if the FPS are going to get a hit I suppose this game can gather dust till someone gets it right.

Thanks for the link mate but i meant link only for the atioglxx.dll of the 11.6 driver.

Oh, well, I rolled back, it's not that much, and I only get artifacts and texture bugs when I don't run it on my native resolution, soo, I guess I'll stick with 1920x1080. False statement, I do get some artifacts too.
And I don't know the link for the dll, sorry.

I hope this works, I've put up a download link for the http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26144715/atioglxx.dll for Win 7 64-bit.

I also get artifacting with 11.6, but atleast no freezing and the artifacting is quite minimal compared to 11.10.

I had also come to the conclusion that this was a driver problem.

Initially this morning I installed Rage on my computer with drivers dating back a month, possibly 11.8 looking at my hard drive's ATI folder. The game started up fine and there were no slowdowns or freezes of any sort, but of course there was horrible texture pop-in.

Having already researched the topic, I rather foolishly added the rageconfig.cfg file and updated my drivers to 11.9 (latest 'stable' version of ATI drivers according to driver website) at the same time. This resulted in the slideshow that you are talking about. (Further description: the game freezes for a period of about 5-10 seconds, then unfreezes for about half a second, then repeats freezing) Foolishly, because I then did not know what was causing the problem - the .cfg file, or the drivers. Assuming that the 11.9 drivers could not be at fault (thanks, ATI), I deleted the .cfg file but this did not get rid of the freezes. I then updated to the beta drivers (11.10) which did not fix the freezes. I even installed Catalyst Control Centre on my system to see if that would help (ugh - what was I thinking).

After messing around with various things for a while, I finally had had enough and hit the system restore button, rolling my computer back to what it had been before I installed the 11.9 drivers (i.e., the 11.8 drivers).

I have just finished re-installing Rage, and lo and behold it is working smoothly. I have put the .cfg file back in the base directory and have reduced the texture pop-in somewhat, so I am half-way there to getting Rage ready to play.

This entire process has taken the best part of 4 hours of my time (including lots of trawling forums i.e. Neogaf, Guru3D and these forums). I'm not impressed.

I am now going to find out if I can tweak the game even more and I might post back here with results if I'm feeling generous.

Cheers,
-A pissed off former id fan

Finally!!! It worked for me, same stuttering issues. But to reiterate I copied the ATi Catalyst 11.6 driver file atioglxx.dll here into the Rage directory. For those who don't know where I am talking about C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\rage.

My specs are:

Windows 7 64bit
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core 5800+ 3.0ghz
4 Gig Ram
Radeon HD 5830 1 Gig

Thanks a bunch Jordy, I was at my end with this garbage. Lets hope a patch and drivers that actually work show up here.

I can confirm this .dll file thing working. Dual core with ati 5xxx series. Had immersive stuttering, nothing helped as of now. Have the newest drivers installed.

Just copied atioglxx.dll which can be found above to the rage folder and stuttering is gone. Texture bobbing is annoying, but at least the game runs and I can concentrate on tweaking the bobbage.

Thank you. Community 1 - id/ati 0. Again.

(Currently running a HD 6970 @1920x1080 @60HZ on 11.8 drivers. My CPU is a Core 2 Duo E8400 @3GHZ (Dual-core processor))

+vt_maxPPF 16

Resulted in increase in frame rate.

+vt_maxPPF 8

Resulted in rather large increase in frame rate, almost 10 frames on average (up to ~24 now).

+vt_pageImageSizeUnique 8192
+vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly 8192
+vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly2 8192
vt_pageimagesizevmtr 8192

Textures only pop-in once, then they seem to remain in memory somehow. With 16384 as the value, the game starts to crawl.

Even with these settings I'm still only up to ~24 fps, with the game slowing to 17 or so during key moments. Unplayable for my tastes.

This is pathetic.

The atioglxx.dll is the opengl part of every catalyst driver. The 11.10 Version is not working for most of the people having dual core cpu's. So we use the 11.6. Every other Version is just not working. Now ATI/AMD has to find out what's the difference between the 11.6 and the later versions and optimize the speed.

The 11.10 atioglxx.dll isn't borked with dual core CPUs in just Rage... try playing Doom 3/Quake 4/Prey/any id Tech 4 game, notice the stuttering.

Confirmed, was able to play the game just perfectly. The only thing that dissapoints me is that textures are still popping up, although the game runs flawllesy for me.

Core 2 Duo E8500@3.16Ghz
Sapphire Radeon HD6870 1Gb

edit: After few minutes of gameplay the game crashed. Sigh.

the 11.6 atioglxx.dll fixed all the missing textures and the freezing for me the CPU usage lowered at about 50-60% the problem is that I get only 23 fps while with the 11.10 I get 60 with the AI disabled, It's definitely a driver issue it's not the game's fault they did something bad to the OpenGL driver there must be a loop process somewhere in the code that makes the CPU reach 99%

Why is it that after I install 11.6, it says in Catalyst that it's 11.5? So annoying... didn't work anyways. I tried this last night and thus the last time I tried anything at all with this game. uninstalled and e-mailed Steam for my refund.

I have the 11.6 drivers but I don't know how to find my rage directory. Seems steam hides their files well. Any help would be appreciated
