FPS Drop when Near NPCs

Post » Mon Aug 17, 2009 2:49 pm

I refuse to accept that the only fix for a developer error is finding or buying a decade old Operating System. If that works for you for the time being, that's fine. I don't have nor do i want Windows XP. This game is "Enhanced for multi-core, and build for windows 7" according to the ads and the box.

What did they do, tell the devs, "Good job on getting the game out everyone, lets all take a vacation until next week." Can we have a response please?

Not to mention the fact that in my experience installing XP on a newer machine is not easy.

I'm getting really frustrated looking around, site to site, seeing people saying "just wait for a patch it's no big deal!"

The hell it's not. You pay money to someone for a good or service, you should be able to make full use of that good or service immediately. If you are unsatisfied, you should be able to obtain a full refund. However, in this case, you have neither option. What does that tell you? Bad business...

No, it just tells you that the Devs are clueless wannabes.

i was pretty damn angry at first. then i realized that there's nothing i can do at this point but to wait for a patch :(
BTW, I did an absolute CLEAN install of the latest Nvidia drivers using Driver Sweeper and uninstalling while in safe mode and the FPS improved noticeably. Yeah, there's still some fps drop around NPCs but it's now playable.

Is this affecting only Nvidia users? I have yet to see an ATI post with this problem.

I have seen several ATI posters, there are just a lot less of them, but as they said, the problem is there for them too.

There was an ATI user in one of the other threads who confirmed he/she also had the issue.

Actually, at this point, probably only half the people who intend to buy it, have. If this gets out, those people won't pick it up until they hear of resolve. So, be glad the word is spreading.

I am in this camp. Probably will wait for a patch. Can't justify spending $$ on this buggy mess. :cryvaultboy:

I can't test this as Amazon hasn't shipped my copy yet :( but read this on an another forum:

For Nvidia users, try using nHancer or Precision to force your card to always use max 3d settings as long as the NV app is running. It seems that perhaps the driver is scaling the 3d performance down during gameplay when it shouldn't.

I've already told a few friends both here and across the pond (where it hasn't yet been released) not to bother yet. If we all did the same, perhaps the Devs would wake up and do something about it?

I'd say they already are, but as we've had ZERO communication from them I can only draw the conclusion that they're not working on it. Or don't know what the word 'communication' means.

Or they're busy working on it so they can't fulfill your communication fetish. Yea, I know no communication is a bad thing, but I doubt they're chilling.

Still no response?

... can we at least get an "OK, there's something wrong here, we're looking into it?"

But in my opinion its not caused by NPCs faces or whatever. It runs like crap because the game uses only 1/3 of your computer power(In my case 30% gpu and one cpu core max 80% other cores 10%). The reason you see biggest fps drops when looking at npcs, buildings or animations is because this game elements require more power to display in correct framerate than lets say empty roads or hills

Agree. This seems to be the underlying true issue. Everything else is symptoms.

You would think. But that has NEVER been Bethie's style, going all the way back to Morrowind,

guys guys guys! i think i found a fix. i dont know if it will work for everyone but yeah. after looking around and seeing the gpu wasnt being utilized completely i figured it could be some directx thing. so i went to http://segmentnext.com/2010/10/19/fallout-new-vegas-errors-crashes-freezes-fixes/ and downloaded the dx9.dll they had posted there to fix the crash after intro video issue. when i started the game the frame rates shot up and there seems to be very little slow down with npcs. my guess is that it is forcing some halfassed dx10 optimization. anyway lemme know if it works for you. ill start a thread for it if it works for people other than me

Come to think of it I have never seen a dev respond to someone when they ask it in any game forums.

I'm having this problem. Asus laptop with an Intel Core i5 running at 2.66Ghz, GeForce GT 335m 1GB video card, and 4GB of RAM. I can play Fallout 3 at High settings without ever dropping below 45 FPS, and rarely below 50.

Come to think of it I have never seen a dev respond to someone when they ask it in any game forums.

You rarely get Developer comments directly to the boards, but generally MOST companies have an intermediary (not MODS) that relay info from the company to the fans when there is problems like this.

guys guys guys! i think i found a fix. i dont know if it will work for everyone but yeah. after looking around and seeing the gpu wasnt being utilized completely i figured it could be some directx thing. so i went to http://segmentnext.com/2010/10/19/fallout-new-vegas-errors-crashes-freezes-fixes/ and downloaded the dx9.dll they had posted there to fix the crash after intro video issue. when i started the game the frame rates shot up and there seems to be very little slow down with npcs. my guess is that it is forcing some halfassed dx10 optimization. anyway lemme know if it works for you. ill start a thread for it if it works for people other than me

OMG give this man a medal, IT WORKED.

CONFIRMED working on Win7 64 with latest nvidia drivers. The 1st big shootout with 10+ NPCs and sliky smooth at 60 fps.

THANK YOU

Unbelievable but this worked for me. The game now runs smooth on my Acer 6935g laptop with Geforce 9600mGT graphics.
Thanks!

I think this should be tested a bit more than one or two machines before starting a "SOLUTION" thread...

But thanks for someone finding something useful. I guess if it works out, devs won't have to do their job.

Shame that "toggleEmotions" didn't work for everyone as it worked for me.

Same. Turning off Vsync, and toggleEmotions together made the game playable for me. Still slowdown but playable.
