My game keeps crashing and I don't know why.

Post » Wed Feb 16, 2011 11:10 pm

I just want to say for the most part my game plays rather smooth, but I still end up crashing at odd moments, I cant really pin point what causes it other then I always seem to at least get 10-45 minutes in the game before I crash.

I mean I could spend two hours in town and be fine, but the next thing I know, I could be out questing or stroll into a shop and then my game crashes.

Here is what it says when I crash to Desktop.

Any help on the matter would be great. I have tried some things on my own like making sure that FFDShow was not messing with the game and decreasing settings for better performance.

I almost gave up with Fallout New Vegas. I was crashing like hell every 10 to 20 minutes but when I found out that Avira Antivir PE and Klite Codec were the culprits and uninstalled them I could play FIVE HOURS STRAIGHT WITHOUT CRASHING although I have to quit FONV from time to time since there are areas that really lags like Nellis AB and Cottoncove.

If you have Avira Antivir PE V5 and Klite Codec, I suggest that you uninstall them temporarily. You could replace Antivir with Avast Free and make sure to make Media Player the default player.

I also noticed greater stability when I do the following before playing:

1. Temporarily disable Avast's (your antivirus) Shields.
2. Use gamebooster to stop unnecessary background processes.
3. Defrag from time to time.
4. Create manual save for backup where you can revert to when you encounter NPC dialogue and scripting bugs. Trust me on this one, it has save me countless moments trying to figure what went wrong on a quest.

Sorry about us being slow to catch this but one potential source of problems is the source of the FFDSHOW audio codec. Since you didn't mention audio stuttering you may have already set your computer not to use it for FalloutNV.exe. If you have not done that, it may be contributing to some of your issues:

To fix this, you can uninstall FFDSHOW from your computer. If you want to keep using the codec however (which, chances are you’d want to), you need to configure it to so your computer won’t use it’s audio decoder for Fallout: New Vegas.

1. Go to your Start Menu and look for the FFDSHOW audio decoder (note that this is the audio decoder, the one with the blue icon, not the video decoder, the one with the maroon icon).
2. Open the ffdshow audio decoder and in the menu that pops-up, Click DirectShow Control
3. click edit on the “Don’t use ffdshow in:” option
4. Click the “Add” button and then select the Fallout: New Vegas executable

If you have the K-lite codec pack installed and have not already uninstalled it as suggested you may just want to go ahead and do that.

I had the video and audio off for those codecs, but I am so fed up with them I just went ahead an uninstalled them also I don't think I have k-lite, and If i did and did not know it, I would not know where to look for them so I assume I don't have it.

Other then weird codecs I am not too sure what else I can do.

Do you have any mods installed?
Do you experience stability problems wihth anything else?

You can try aclean boot to windows and play the game then.

Dont reenable anything and try to play .

Hey man, I think that the cause of the crash is the Realtek High Definition Audio Codec.

I just uninstalled it like 4 hours ago and I played New Vegas 2 hours straight WITHOUT any CTD. Haven't fully tested if it would crash if I re-install it again though :P

I haven't had any crashes so I hope it works for you.

I don't see how that would be the problem as I have had that audio codec since I got the computer; meaning it was the default codec for the computer. Also I have F03 and it never had any problems with it.

Yeah to be honest I don't see why New Vegas Crashes so damn much, it's the same engine they have been using for a while now. Also while I am thinking about it, TES IV and FO3 never crashed as much as New Vegas does. Which in my mind boggles me. It makes me wonder what it was they added that screwed over this other wise great game.

Well it won't for me , mind sharing your secrets because I find it a load of crock if you have a perfectly running game while the rest of us have to work with this bug infested game. The games great but it's hard to praise it when you keep getting CTD.

Run the game without the 1.2.0 patch

I had a similar problem, my game didn't crash but while in vats I dropped to 0-5 fps making me have to quit the game being unplayable (aka 'crash' the game myself)

What I did was:

1) Tell Steam not to update the game (double-click Steam icon in taskbar, select "Games" and "View Games Library", right click on Vegas, select "Properties", select the "Updates" tab and choose not to have updates automatically installed.

2) right click on Fallout.exe in steamapps, click Properties, then Previous Versions, copy the version dated October and put it in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas replacing the original file.

Except for the bug in the casino that holds the White Glove Society, I've had one crash in 22 hours of game play. So the game is very stable.

Of course, my computer is in great shape. I do maintence on it every week. I don't let it get full of bloat-ware, spy-ware or viruses. I don't use all kinds of dodgy "helpers," etc. Just a lean and clean game machine.

And, amazingly, except for "real" programming/scripting bugs, I never have problems... Imagine that...

And my Ford Pinto's gas tank never exploded so there must not have been any problems with Ford Pinto gas tanks right?

The game is working fine for me on my main system but not working very well at all on my other system (similar specifications but a GTX 260 instead of a GTX 485) despite both being almost entirely fresh windows installations. To presume the performance of the game on one's particular setup should be mirrored on another person's system and that it it would only be their fault if it did not is neither helpful nor is it even remotely reasonable. You are improperly using your experience to declare the game to be perfectly stable as an absolute fact independent of the variety of hardware and OS combinations it is installed across. This is just as incorrect as declaring the game to be a perfect mess based on the fact that it will not run stably on their computer.

People had given the same response to the save game corruption issues experienced in Vault 3 and the REPCONN launch facility. They would chime in saying that it worked fine for them and that the user was probably doing something wrong or had a problem with viruses. Some continued to do this even in the face of the bug being reported in the console versions as well. Similarly, despite people reporting instability and crashing in the console versions you presume that a "lean and clean" gaming machine free of viruses and spy-ware will result in stability similar to yours. It's harder to get leaner or cleaner than a closed platform which literally is a gaming machine.

Regardless of how lean and clean someone's system is there is a chance that they will suffer from instability due to the uneven way in which this game reacts to certain hardware and software setups independent of their capabilities. In some cases it has even be true that users have found that having the latest versions of drivers and patches for the game were the source of their problems- finding them to go away only once they rolled back bother their driver versions and reverted to a previous version of the game. Your own personal positive experience does not justify dismissing anther's poor experience as user error. The causes of game instability have varied from user to user and have, quite often, been unrelated to anything that even a relatively competent computer user could have been expected to be able to diagnose on their own.

The game is not universally broken just as it is not universally stable regardless of what you might presume about the user's intelligence.

See I made this Thread because "I" have a problem running the game. I realize that some people may not have the problems I do because of hardware differences. I made this thread hoping to get help, which from what I understand every one and their brother is waiting to hear from someone who can make use of the info we give them. What I did not make the thread for is to hear that some one has an epic rig that Chuck Norris uses for training weights.

Yeah it seems odd to post "works for me" in a help thread anyways.

Have you tried running it in window mode. For some very strange reason running it in windowed mode seems to fix a lot of stability problems. If it does work in windowed mode try hitting "alt-enter" after starting up a game (actual game not just menu) and see if it still works like that. I don't know why windowed mode works better for some people, but it might be worth giving a try if you've tried everything else including validating game cache and various driver versions.

Also I know you've already been told about the FFDSHOW codec issues, but sometimes this utility on NewVegasNexus is rather helpful:

Just be sure to create a system restore point like the download page says- it doesn't make any assumptions about what audio/video editing software you have and its possible that some of them rely on specific codecs that may be affected by the utility.

Well I tried it and It still crashes, but not from the change or anything, as I think it helped with some stuttering issues but it's really hard to tell as my main focus was really trying to see if I could crash that hoe lol. Last crash was somewhere around bitter springs recreational area (I think that's the name of it.).

Check if you have any sound programs running in the background and turn them off. My issue was that I only got 10min of play time before CTD. Each CTD was preceded by a loss of sound. I had Replay R/V running in the background the whole time and once I turned that off, problem was gone. If you have any similar recorders or other sound programs they may be the reason you're crashing. Try turning them off while you play.
