Games that you're GLAD you bought

Post » Mon Jun 20, 2011 5:34 am

So, since we have a games you regret buying thread, I figured I'd counter-act it with a thread about games that you're glad you purchased. I don't just mean games that you enjoyed, I mean games that made you go, "Wow, I'm really glad I decided to get this game, it was really well worth it!"

For me, I'd have to say Morrowind and Oblivion. Not just because they were fun games, but also because they really introduced me to RPGs as a whole. I'm also really glad I bought Dead Space. I was a little iffy on it at first, as I'd never played a horror game before, but it was very fun.

Discuss. :)

Isn't this the same as a "favorite game" thread? :P

In before someone makes a "Games you bought and were totally neutral on, then proceeded to forget about until I asked you" thread

But on to some games I'm glad I bought:

Deus Ex
Fallout 3
Morrowind
Portal
Borderlands
Universe Sandbox (it's a simulation, not a game, but hey it's on http://store.steampowered.com/app/72200/ so... yeah!)

Mount & Blade Warband

Oblivion
Demon's Souls
Portal
Fallout 3
Overlord (and the Raising Hell expansion)

That's really it. I feel pretty neutral about all my other games.

Pretty much, yes. But a bit more. :P

Universe Sandbox (it's a simulation, not a game, but hey it's on http://store.steampowered.com/app/72200/ so... yeah!)

That is a fantastic program, very entertaining.

Off the top of my head...

Mass Effect
Dragon Age: Origins
Harvest Moon 64
Fallout: New Vegas
Neverwinter Nights: Platinum Version (Because it came with the awesome expansions HoTU and SoU, had I played the original campaign only I'd have hated the series and counted as one of my biggest regrets)
Morrowind

Though in the case of Morrowind, I really didn't feel that way until several months after the fact. I hated the game at first, and hated the Toonami programming block for recommending it. (Anyone here remember Toonami? Or even when they did videogame reviews in between shows?) I gave it a retry and eventually fell in love with the game, however, and now count it as one of my favorites of all time.

Lets see..

Battlefield: Bad Company 2

This game set the standard for FPS's in my mind. Destruction 2.0. The leveling. The vehicles. The tactics. I just fell in love with every ounce of it.

Fallout 3

Although I was skeptical on the whole idea of a post-apocalyptic RPG, I'm glad it caught my eye. Without it, four hundred hours of my life might have actually been spent on something worthwhile.

Uncharted 1 & 2.

In terms of story, not many shooters can come close to matching Naughty Dog's precious jewel. It was a wonderful, action pack thrill ride that I'm very glad to have experienced.

Assassins Creed 2 & Brotherhood

A badass story, intriguing characters, amazing assassinations and free-roam, plus a surprisingly well-done multiplayer experience.

Mass Effect 2

Though I have never played the original, the cloud that hung over my head as I played through every segment of Mass Effect just kept me hooked all the way through. Knowing that every choice I made could have dire effects in the future made me re-think every choice, right before I made it. A spectacular game from beginning to end.

Heavy Rain

The Greatest (and only) Interactive Drama of this gaming generation. Its worth picking up a PS3 just to play through this game. Knowing that any one of your characters could die at any time allowed for a gaming high I have yet to experienced with any other game to this date. A truly magnificent title.

Went a little overboard, huh? :P

Morrowind of course. it introduced me into indepth rpg's and actual role playing rather than games I had previously thought to be rpg's like fable, but were really more like platformers with light rpg elements.

Far too many games made me what I am today, provided more than just enjoyable playtime. Planescape: Torment is a great example though. Lately it's been Fate of the World (which is a deal on Steam until later today, so CHECK IT OUT).

BUY IT! BUY IT NOW!

Seriously though that game is so special to me. It's what kicked off my love of games. First game I ever owned when I got my N64 back in the day.

PS: I am insanely jealous you get to enjoy it with improved graphics and gameplay and in 3d no less.

Off the top of my head, I can think of two recent purchases:

Minecraft, which I wasn't entirely sold on at first. But after I started to gather up enough resources, found a decent place to build, and began the first iteration of my house, I was hooked. Really, really addictive game.

Portal 2. I haven't played the first Portal, so I wasn't sure I'd like this game, especially since I had heard that it's pretty short, but after hearing all the good reviews I decided to go for it. I knew it was going to be epic the moment Wheatley came through the door. I spent two days doing basically nothing but play Portal 2, and I loved every second of it. Hilarious characters, puzzles, and sci fi? Not sure how it can get much better. :D

As a side note, I stumbled upon the Portal Gun mod for Minecraft, and it is AMAZING. The portal mechanic really compliments Minecraft's gameplay, imo(especially since the Knee Replacements mean I don't have to worry about dieing and having all my building material scattered across half the country when working on my floating towers). Portal+Minecraft=

UO: I probably have more hours logged into that game than any other two games combined. I played it fairly soon after it came out, till about the time Necromancers and Paladins were introduced.
Daggerfall: Despite the fact that ot was so buggy that I needed to load a patch into it the same day I bought the game to even play it.
Morrowind: I have to admit when I first bought it I hated it. I probably uninstalled the game 8 or 9 times, I kept going back to it out of bordom. One month I was so broke I couldnt afford to do anything and was tired of my other games so I forced myself to play it, and it became one of my all time favorites :D
Oblivion
Fallout 1, 2, and 3: Not so much New Vegas, but it may grow on me.
WoW: There I said it :P I dont play it now and cant imagine going back to it, but I had a lot of fun with friends online. If it were a single player game though I probably wouldnt have played it for long.
Age of Empires + the expansion pack, a name that slips my mind at the moment.
Freelancer: As much as I like the game it did feel incomplete though, and no flight stick for a space combat simulater always bugged me.

Ha I wish I had the money for one. I'd honestly buy it purely to play that one game.
Someday I'll have to get around to ordering a new n64 controller so I can replay the original since all mine have broken control sticks :brokencomputer: .

Just Cause 2: Best sandbox game I've played yet.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent ; A game that is freaking intense. It can scare some people, but I don't scare very easily but even so the game still gives an intense vibe that can keep you awake for a long time.

FFXIII-Despite what most people say it's really not a bad game and it is one of my favorite in the series

Dragon Age Origins-Though I'm not feeling a second play-through anytime soon

Mass Effect (both 1 and 2)-Wasn't sure what to expect from the first Mass Effect game and at first I didn't like it. It grew on me and it's one of my favorite game series now.

Fallout New Vegas-I was a bit wary of getting it considering how big of a let down Fallout 3 was for me. A lot of issues I had with Fallout 3 were improved upon in F:NV and I really enjoyed the game.

Portal 2 - I'll get the first one eventually.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas - My introduction to both Fallout and open world RPG's...And to shooter-RPGs. Both very fun but quite different games.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood - I enjoy these games for the fun stuff. Killing things and climbing things. Or climbing things to kill things. I get to do alot of that in Brotherhood. Plus it's multiplayer is awesome.

Half-Life2 - Great game. 'Nuff said.

Metro 2033 - Fun game. Looks AWESOME. More tactical than CoD, less than Rainbow Six. Quite challenging at times.

Baldur's Gate (The original) - This is the very first game I ever played to any serious extent. I was young, real young and played it for hours on end. I bought it from GoG a couple weeks back and have been having a blast. I swear it was easier as a kid...

I know the first three are obvious, but here they are:

Oblivion- I was 16. I didn't know who Bethesda was, but somehow I ended up getting this on release day. It didn't take long for this to become my favorite game.

Fallout 3- I saw this in Game Informer and didn't think it looked that great. I also, somehow, didn't notice it was developed by Bethesda. I finally got it like 4 or 5 months after it came out, and I was hooked. It became my new favorite game, and it is still my favorite. It also made BGS my favorite developer.

Morrowind- I loved Oblivion so much, I had to try this, and I loved it. I actually ended up getting Morrowind and Oblivion for both 360 and PC.

Bioshock- It took me a few years to finally buy this game. I had heard it was good, but I just never tried it. When I finally bought it, I was amazed. The gameplay isn't really that unique, but when it comes to this game, that's not important. The atmosphere and the story to this game are just incredible. Not necessarily the Main story, but the overall story. From the creation of Rapture to its downfall, it's all good. I didn't actually buy Bioshock 2, but I felt the same. The gameplay was no different, but it was just another awesome experience in a game world that I love.
