Games with literary merit. Are there (m)any?

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 5:22 pm

Gamgee, I absolutely could not care less whether something is "literary" or "pulpy", as long as I enjoy it. I'll take enjoyability over artistic merit any day. I wanted to round up those games which were above and beyond the norm, because I was kind of curious about how far video gaming's progressed in this respect. Seems to me we have a few more decades to go, yet, before video gaming's taken seriously.

The motive for me starting this thread was to satisfy my curiosity. But apparently I just want to get kicks out of kicking others. It's funny that I'm being accused of doing exactly what the last few posters have been doing to me.

Have fun on your next witch hunt!

[censored] it. Whatever. Thanks for hijacking the thread, guys.

What was the point of the thread in the first place? You say that you are looking for "literary" games, which would be games that are like books (of which there are not many, and those that are are often considered "interactive novels" rather than games), but then you start arguing about how good the stories of various games are. Unless you just don't know what the word "literature" means, and confused it with a descriptor of the depth of a story, which is my best guess.

Even in that case, however, can't you see that that's subjective? You said that you're looking for games that are literature, which you apparently think means "games with deep stories", but then you said that this isn't a thread for discussion. So, if we're not supposed to discuss anything, then what is this thread for? Did you just want us to submit games to you so that you could tell us whether they pass your definition of literature?

Except you do... your clearly looking for the "best". Or ones you like. I'm sorry if you can't handle that fact. So on some level you have a way to distinquish good and better from bad, it's why we have those descriptors. I don't care if you want to be in denial of your own actions though, I'm not trying to be hostile. Just explain we're all human here, and then you go and start snapping at me for some reason. I can see some of the others being a little too hostile, but me? I dunno, I think your taking it to personally. The funny thing is, movies werent taken seriously once, and now that they are people go back to all these old classics and marvel at them. So go ahead, don't take them seriously. They will be one day, even the old ones. Time will make sure of this, you can't fight time. But feel free to try.

I also never said you got kicks out of kicking others, I said you could. Or might, again no idea why your hostile to me. Perhaps the only one in this topic trying to be reasonable with you. Oh yea, witch hunt. Implies people want to find you. I think your giving yourself a little bit too much credit after how you've snapped at us all in turn. A little overy dramatic here.

This wasn't actually meant to be a discussion thread. There are some games that are largely considered better than others in this respect. I was trying to find out which those were.

You cannot honestly tell me that people who actually know about these things would consider ME "literary".

I started a thread so I could bully people? REALLY?

Well, no. You obviously did not start at thread to bully people, the over-reactive posts of a couple members to the contrary. But... your statement "This wasn't actually meant to be a discussion thread. " tells me why the thread went a bit off the rails. This is an internet forum. A forum on a gaming community. People have ideas and opinions and if you make a thread, it means you are discussing something. You cannot control who or how people respond in this way. I thought you were getting some interesting responses, even if you did not agree.

I will close the thread, if that is your wish. I can clean out the more... off-putting posts and try to get it sorted, if you would like me to. PM me.
