Gametrailer's roleplaying game of the year goes to...

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 10:39 pm

Dark souls has not yet interested me enough to think about playing it.

To any who've played, is it any good? I've heard good reviews, just oh so satisfied with Skyrim and it has set my game schedule back quite a bit. Haver games I'd like to buy, but might as well not purchase them as thy will go down in price and I wouldn't be playing them anyway.

Won't be done Skyrimming for a loooooooooooooong time.

Dunno, depends on if hardcoe titles appeal to you.
I haven't played it, but it's supposed to have a similar steep learning curve to Monster Hunter.

Dark Souls is a very good game, and the combat is addicting as hell. Played it quite a bit before Skyrim came out, but they're really not the same kind of game. I'm glad it got a GOTY, it deserves it.

Congrats to Dark Souls. My RPG Open World GOTY is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Skyrim shouldn't have won anyway. It's much more of an action/adventure game than it is an RPG.

Dark Souls!

Thoughts?

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/best-role-playing-game-of-the/725240

I'm having a hard time to decide for myself, whether the GOTY should be awarded to either Dark Souls or Skyrim. Having played Dark Soul's predecessor quite a lot, I found it too easy, thus not justifying the "Prepare to Die"-claim. It definitely didn't come close to the hardness it promised before release, it was fun, though.

Skyrim has its own problems, and I hope that among these there isn't an unsolvable one. The game is immersive, much longer than Dark Souls would ever be...

Well, I wouldn't want to decide which of these two should be awarded GOTY.

Congrats Dark Souls! In its current PS3 form Skyrim needs more fixing and not awards. I have never played a PS3 game that is so broken from freezes, broken main quests, broken side quests, lag, corrupted files, etc. If only I could get my money back. Well lesson learned, I will never buy another Bethesda game again, nor count them a trusted publisher of great content.

I love how people overanolyze these games.

dark souls isnt a rpg its a hack and slash game

skyrim isnt a rpg is a action adventure/simulator

just need to accept that rpg is a rather wide category nowadays.

rpg doesnt mean you roleplay anything you want, i tcan also mean you roleplay what they give you. hence why bioware games are still rpg's, it might not be the role you created, but its teh one your playing.

skyrim its "your" role, dark souls your role is that of a random cursed undead.

either way, as much as i love both...i htink neither shouldve been GoTY, witcher 2 is above and beyond the most amazing rpg ive ever had th pleasure of playing. and ive played nearly every rpg (excluding some japanese titles) since diablo. Bioware likes to tout the choices matter slogan a lot, but witcher 2 did it without boasting and did it a million times better.

They should port the damn game to PC, there's definitely a market for it and From Software doesn't seem to realize it.

Dark Souls combat was slow, boring, and cumbersome.

I guess those qualities are the niche thing this year.

From what I played of it, also, the online hint feature is a joke. So many "I can't take anymore" and "go here" in front of ledges.

I can't tell if this is funny, sad, or a pathetic attempt to slam Skyrim. Dark Souls deserves to win a better reward like unique IP of the year but there's no comparasion to Skyrim. Skyrim does everything better then Dark Souls.

Reasonable. Dark Souls and Skyrim are similar in many ways, except DS actually works most of the time.

I haven't played Dark Souls but I have played and finished Demon's Souls and if its anything like that then no, it's not better than Skyrim, imo.
Regardless, they gave the best FPS award to MW3 so I don't consider their opinion valid at this point.

I only play on PC so I don't know about DS.

All I know is Skyrim is already the game I've spent the most time with.

A decision made specifically to push people's buttons, don't fall for it. Everyone knows Skyrim is GOTY - those who say otherwise in a category like this are just looking for attention.

?

Just like you, I have an opinion, and that's all it is. Dark Souls was the better game.

GOTY is a flawed concept because it depends entirely on the individual playing it.

There are a lot of great games that came out this year. This might be one of the better gaming years in a long time. Not sure how to judge them all.

This is true.

I hear all the time that Witcher 2 and Dark Souls has more deph than Skyrim.

From are a Japanese developer so it probably won't happen. :(

I'd buy it again on PC, it is that good.

I prefer Skyrim or the Witcher 2, and the former out of the two. As much as people say Skyrim "IZ NOT A REAL RPG" DS is less. It's almost completely a Hack and Slash, in fact the hack 'n' slashing It's Its main selling point. A good game anyway.

Also, Deus Ex: HR an RPG?

Oh, and nominating DA:2? Are these guys serious?

i liked DA2 tho i dont think its award worthy.

whoever said dark souls combat was cumbersome..../boggle, its probably the most precise, skill based melee combat out there for any rpg. unless you were a fool and tried a large weapon with 0 poise, or tried to go without shield.

while i love dark souls, and me personally it ranks higher then skyrim, i dont exactly see it as GoTY material simply because it draws people in as much as it alienates others. not everyone is up for the challenge.

i do laugh everytime someone mentions skyrims graphics as a benchmark simply because the witcher 2 has flat out better graphics, even if you dislike the art direciton its still better graphic wise. and imo struck a nice chord of simplistic yet rewarding melee combat.

So innovation and mechanics are Skyrim's weaknesses. I agree.

I didn't play Dark Souls. But I feel they are trying to teach a lesson. A much deserved one. Totally late though, if Oblivion was treated like this, things would go very differently.
You mean selling [censored]loads of copies and winning several more GOTYs than Oblivion, as well as the arguably biggest one, VGA's? I think the only lesson they'll learn is making more TES games.

sadly yes, the "streamlining" aka dumbing down (some of it really was) and the pretty graphics fail to impress on the more discerning ploayers but a lot of the new players (consoles) are just enthralled since they havent had much like it. i say this because even with morrowind on consoles it didnt get that widespread, and oblivion was bigger but had its own set of issues.
