Getting my first Pony

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 1:49 am

So my mother has recently told me that I can go get a part time job if I want.

The only place I have in mind is a fruit farm just down the road within riding distance.

But how do I even ask? Do I just walk in and ask?Do I need to see the manager?

Can you tell me anything I need to know?

I'd phone them and ask if they have any positions available, I guess. Or send them a CV.

When I got my first job (first job EVER) was just 9 months ago. I got the job through filing an application through Internet (the job was listed in a site managed by Ministry of Labor). I filed total 6 applications, to the last of which I got in and 2 others later contacted me (which I turned down). All they asked was my personal history and details and CV (which was near empty, in my case). I filed the applications and just two days later my to-be Boss called me and asked me for interview.

With me I took my army service record because it was perfect (maximum points in all evaluated fields) and thus it would assist me greatly. My to-be boss was impressed, and I topped that off with a handshake, proper grammar, clean clothes and a cheery attitude. I got the job in about 5 minutes and started immediately.

Thus, some instructions:
- Call them or file application through Internet. Today's world is so hectic that many corporations don't take walk-ins anymore, at least here in Finland.
- If you have any documents that could help you, consider taking them with you.
- Make sure you are wearing clean clothes and you are otherwise clean.
- Look the employer in the eyes when talking to him, utilize all common good-guy tactics.
- Be yourself.

If it's a farm getting hired will be much more casual, just go and ask if they're hiring, show initiative.

Can you tell me anything I need to know?
That costs extra. I'll have my people talk to your people and we'll work something out.

Doesn't serving in the military count as a job?

Finland has conscription, so no unless you are an active duty officer.

Most of the jobs I've had, nepotism was the answer. I thoroughly recommend it!

Tell them you'll stop stealing fruit from their farm to sell to kids at school (mention how it tastes like crap) if they give you a job.. or else you'll clean them out. (shake your fist menacingly too)

Or you could ask a manager if they have any jobs available, but that's far less fun.

Yeah, I've got another application in the works but it's even-more unlikely (and I don't want it as much) I'll see if the place I'm at gets me a sponsor (they have a good record) and will apply for AWE again next year.

Just walk down there and ask for the person who's in charge of hiring. When you meet him or her, give them a firm handshake and tell them your name and just ask if they're hiring at the moment.

You work your butt off and they don't have to pay minimum wage. At least in the U.S. I worked on a farm for a year and a half during high school. Made like 3 bucks an hour and he hated giving that. Very labor intensive and dirty.

My first job my madre got for me, I was a janitor because I promised myself that I would work any job for a first job so long as I had a job because I had to begin somewhere.

I got my second job recently, about two or three weeks ago, I'm a cashier at a pizza place. I just popped in, asked if they were hiring (luckily the manager was working cashier that day), she said they needed a cashier and they gave me a new hire form. And that was it, I was hired when I turned it in the next day, didn't even have to fill out an actual application.

Of course I had tried to apply to multiple stores before that, it just takes some initiative, a friendly smile, and some luck. Or connections, either one works really. Good luck to you!

EDIT: Forgot to mention that they asked if I could speak spanish (I can, fluently). So any other languages you know may also be helpful in getting hired, so be sure to mention them and any skills you have that you think may help you out in whatever you'll be working.

Proving your maturity by calling me a kid. Well done, my good sir!

And no, that's not how the world works. You can get a good job without marrying the bosses daughter, but that's cool that you did.

I think he was being facetious.

OT - Working svcks. I miss school. Work hard, show your boss that you're dedicated, and get ready for disappointment.

I'm currently writing my résumé at the moment. :)

What do I do if the manager isn't around? Do I ask the person at the front desk?

Really? Interesting I didn't know that. Then again the Finnish army has always been a very capable one for it's size.
