Pick what you like the best. I really like the glass because it actually slightly resembles a real combat weapon you wouldn't be afraid of getting stuck in a victim. I'm personally not a big fan of over-the-top japanimationesque gear and weaponry. But that's a personal preferrence. Damage-wise , endgame there's really a minimal difference as you hone your playstyle and your gear continues to get better. One of the light armor perks falls right into a melee fighter's bread and butter , stamina regen.Even if it's more effective out of combat , which I've personally not really noticed , it's the warrior's version of fortify magicka regen. So to answer your question , no you won't be hugely gimping your damage output by going up the light side.
One-handed perks and blocking perks after smithing can have a massive impact on your game experience.Once you get standing power attack damage bonus and the charge attack perk , you'll dramatically approach fights differently.Single-wielding with a shield will make these perks more useful and not as overpowered as if you were dual-wielding them.My dual-wielding fighter after getting these two perks tivialized almost everything in the game , but the same perks coupled with a shield make sense. You could even go up the block tree and become an absolute crowd demolishing monster , but you'll still have the problem of really long combat times which is the biggest liability for any PC.But you sure won't lack for laughs as your enemies flop around in the air helplessly.
Basically it's going to boil down to late-game experience for you if you decide to perk into melee combat skills coupled with all the crafting skills , you'll become untouchable at a certain point bordering on complete boredom (for me). My strategy now is not to spend perk points just because I have them , I spend them when the game seems to have bumped up a notch and gotten a bit more challenging.
