If going MMO is a bad idea, what's your !dea?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 5:38 pm

opinion:
I think that it would be a bad idea for Bethesda to go mmo. I don't feel that the mmo scene is up to the quality standards that I have for an Elder Scrolls game. I put Elder Scrolls games above mmo's in the list of quality rpg games.

!dea:
I think they should go multiplayer, but somehting more along the lines of Borderlands. Some sandbox world with about four player coop, and then add a separate multiplayer vs mode.

vision:
The Elder Scrolls worlds are already so robust and life like that I would really only want to play with about three to five other players at the same time. It would be nice to have been able to run around Morrow Wind/Skyrim with my friends, questing and looting. I would like to see a system of social interaction implemented instead of scripting the whole thing. Some type of content delivery system, that would offer quests from a pool of content from anyone how you interacted with. Hard to describe but I can see it in my head.

I'd rather have an TES-MMO than a TES-Borderlands.

I'm completely fine with the idea of it going MMO. It all depends on how the combat ends up.

An MMO that doesn't try to be World of Warcraft.

My idea is this, Are you ready, this is going to turn the mmo world on its head:

Don't make a TES MMO, keep TES single player. :o

I'd rather have a TES MMO that is actually TES instead of a WoW/TOR copy with a thin coating of TES on top of it.

A skill-based rather than class-based action RPG sandbox MMO more akin to Ultima Online meets Planetside than another cookie-cutter theme park MMO. I swear, the people who claim that you can't do anything else with MMOs must think WoW was the first MMO ever to exist.

Well, from the screenshots leaked online, it's going to owe far more to WoW and the aesthetics of Dragon Age than those of TES. Not really a surprise. Not being made by Bethesda it will not be a true TES product.

An innovative MMO, maybe something like World of Darkness http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/03/27/world-of-darkness-permadeath-and-politics-hanging-out-in-bars-could-be-a-powerful-play/

What bothers me is that it seems they are not bringing nothing new to the genre.

I played a lot of pen and paper RPGs on the 90s, and when the MMOs apeared I thought: Hey, RPG online, sweet!

But that was not true, MMO dont have that much space for roleplay. Maybe WoD can finally deliver this, and TES Online had the potential to be the same for medieval fantasy.

Change the name to Big scrolls online. The epic online fantasy game very similar to Tes.

I think that would be good for us, but probably risky for business.

Not the first, but the modern day standard to model after. I don't disagree with you. We are worried that ESo will be WOW with a different skin, and I'm sure that's not what the game designers are going for either. But I think that it is important to rationally look at what is best for the company.. b/c that's what the designers are going to have to deal with. How can I prove that my game design with generate revenue? Why does WOW rake in so much bank? They are a proven system, how should we be like them to guarantee revenue, but be different to steal their customers.

Does anyone know where to find the numbers on how many people play each of the most popular mmos?

A sandbox MMO rather than a themepark MMO. Inspired by for example Mortal Online. Mortal Online is more Elder Scrolls-like than TESO will ever be.

My idea is don't make a horrible mmo, make TES VI. You know a single player game. One where you can explore and use your imagination! :D

I'd either want it as split-screen or LAN. It's not a game you'd want to play with random people. Plus no latency issues that way.
Other than that I see no good alternatives to an MMO with its own mechanics.

Go instanced MMO until technology allows entire worlds for players..

example

lets say the mmo takes place in skyrim, morrowind and cyrodil
in towns everyone is visable
outside of town only your party is visable ( i think guildwars does it this way)

there can be PVP zones, and dungeons, as well as PVE single player, multiplayer and super large battles as well for all i care.

the problem is the perfect TES MMO is definatly undoable, as the perfect TES MMO would be skyrim but 10000 times the size, place the player in a random spot and say "play the game do what you want"
if you would see another player you could kill him and take his stuff like eve online :3
you could pickpocket him like a champ :3
you could ignore him, or help him with killing that dragon troll monster.
go questing or dungeon hunting with him :D
you could make armor and sell it to others
you could repair armor for yourself and others
you could collect arrows people left behind
you would have to eat food and drink water or beer.
NPCs would react based on what you do or did
crime wouldn't be a simple " pay the fine" it would have to be a big deal.
Arena vs players, and co-op arena vs NPCs
Dungeons for loots
PVP battles PVE battles, such as everyone vs thalmor

the world would be so big you could travel 24/7 for DAYS and still not get to the other side.

the problem is none of it is doable on current technology.

So expect the "real" TES MMO several decades down the road. Until then we have this semblence.

I'd much rather see TES stay as the pinnacle of immersive, single-player roleplaying. It's pretty much the only game in the genre at this point. TES has created its own niche, and they're going MMO just like everybody else.

We are going to keep hammering in "Elder Scrolls Online and the single-player games are made by seperate companies" until the nail finally gets all the way through that thick skull that a lot of people seem to have  . For the love of love, there will be future TES single-player games and they will be made with no less effort than any of the previous ones!

I don't have a problem with TES going MMO. I just have a problem with the execution.

Elder Scrolls has many "tropes", things that people commonly associate to the series. A first-person, real-time combat system is one. A dark, rich design aesthetic is another. And an unobtrusive interface with certain staple elements (a health, magicka, and stamina bar, a compass, and two hands). Music by Jeremy Soule. And so on.

None of these elements seem to be present in the game, and I'm wondering, at what point do you cross the rubicon? When does it stop being Elder Scrolls, and something else instead?

To not even attempt to include many of these elements feels to many a little tone-deaf, as if they don't know who they're trying to sell to. 3rd person, hotbar-based open world PVP in a primary-colored world are not the reasons I enjoy playing TES games. And like many, I would love to be proven wrong about the direction this game is headed in. I want to like it!

Can I have your crystal ball, pl0x? :bonk:

While I am inclined to agree with that, frankly, we do not know if/how TES:Online will affect the future to TES games.

Seem to have a large population of pessimistic people that like to make assumptions, based on all the posts... (Not directed at you....)

<---- Vehemently opposed to the idea of introducing thousands of players to a WoW-based TES MMO and a general chat full of Chuck Norris jokes. I'm a PC gamer who spent over £2000 on a new rig last year.
