Good indie rock bands

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 10:45 am

Pretty much every band I enjoy listening to either stopped making music, is on hiatus, or changed there sound so drastically I can't enjoy it. The reason I want indie rock bands is that I love that feeling of getting an album you watched and waited on for so long, unfortunately because of the aforementioned reasons I don't often get that feeling, the last album I waited on was the most recent Flogging Molly album and even then I felt a tad disappointed in there changing sound. A friend of mine recommended I listen to The Shins but from what I've heard there songs are more music for the sake of music than music with a feeling and a meaning that I prefer. What can some of you guys suggest to me?

You may be interested in a band called Boyce Avenue (their YouTube is linked in my signature). They are more or less Alternative Rock, and they started by just posting covers of songs online, and now they are fairly well known on the internet. They post a lot of covers, but they have two albums out currently, the newest being "All We Have Left" which is all original songs.

Indie is a pretty big genre. Here's some bands and artists I like that I'd consider "indie" on some level.

Arcade Fire
Decemberists
Elliott Smith
Flaming Lips
Joanna Newsom
Neko Case
Neutral Milk Hotel
New pormographers
Octopus Project
Sparklehorse

A lot of that's not rock, necessarily. If you specifically want rock, go for Arcade Fire, Decemberists, and New pormographers first.

Death Cab For Cutie is one of the most popular indie sounding bands out there.
As Tall As Lions, though I don't know how much indie they actually are, but still good
The Postal Service
Neutral Milk Hotel
Modest Mouse, aren't they indie?
Snow Patrol
Blur
The Decemberists
Arcade Fire
Pheonix

Don't know if this qualifies for indie or not but "We Were Promised Jetpacks" is pretty awesome. Their song "Medicine" played on my local station during "The Independent Rock Block", so I guess it's indie.

I'm going to post some of what I consider indie. I've seen some already mentioned so I won't post those.

Here's some good music I've been listening to lately, not hard at all really but somebody here will most likely enjoy them. Everything I link to I highly recommend

This is a really sad song by a fairly well-known band called Eels, the whole album is amazing. Eels is an alternative/acoustic indie rock band.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3S3QSNOE88

This next song is by one member of the band Animal Collective, an experimental group. This whole album is also highly recommended (album is called Down There).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz2VGEQ4x-Y

This next song is by Strand of Oaks, really beautiful album. Genre is folk I believe. This whole album is also absolutely amazing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQzDW1IdgQ8

This next song is by a gem of a band called Snowmine, I can't understand how they're not more known already. Genre is indie/psychedelic, or at least that's what I've been told. Album is called Laminate Pet Animal, the whole thing is amazing, free download on their bandcamp page. http://snowmine.bandcamp.com/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIqqcjMzavM

This next album is also pretty well known. By an alternative/post-punk (or something) band called The Replacements.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJcCzWcgPsY

Here's my post from the music recommendations thread, only things not "indie" on there are The Replacements and Avey Tare but you might also enjoy those, so you should check them out as well.

I'll post some more as well:

Indie is a pretty big genre.

Well really it's not a genre at all, but okay.

I'd advise you check out Calexico. Great band, quite folky, should be right up your street. Have a listen to The Black Light, it's a great album.

Not too knowledgeable about indie music, but I do love me some poppy indie like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdSoPMh6kUM or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksMEXz_YOCI

(Thanks for making this thread and reminding me it's been a while since I've listened to Metric :foodndrink: )

I'll expand upon this by suggesting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1aT8fNBts8(Straight forward and hard to dislike) and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKgJiu_-9PY(Orchestral pop meets "indie" folk)

This is a great recent album. It's pretty much indie folk over ambient electronic music, very tastefully done. I recommend listening to the album in full instead of judging it by my link.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-Lr0igwLIY&ob=av2e

Other random stuff:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmjMFPSLXI4&feature=related Indie rock, simple but good song writing. Lyrics and vocals can get a bit meh at times but both are solid for the majority of the album. Everything else is good if you aren't looking for a super-serious listen.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHaCtxW6Vv8 Indie folk rockish stuff, pretty neutral towards this myself but they haven't been mentioned so I see no reason not to share.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0M6s_OIRNc Gentle indie folk/rock.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_GFfUBBQVw Not indie(I hate using that word to describe music) but since you mentioned feeling and meaning over everything else this might be something you appreciate. The mind behind it all is christian and he calls the band a christian one but it doesn't show too much through the music. I recommend the older albums Gold and Silver but you might end up liking the newer ones more as the vocals are much clearer on them instead of the mumbled/distorted vocals that dominated Starflyer's early releases.

Also going to recommend http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ns9M6DcjtY just because it's the blues clues guy and who doesn't want to hear the blues clues guy make serious music?

OP, you should give us names instead of just saying all of the groups you're into don't make music any more. Would make providing accurate recommendations much easier.
