Good Old Ponies becomes just GOP.com

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 10:30 pm

After years of specializing in downloadable retro releases, Good Old Games is changing its name and focus. Tomorrow at 9 a.m. GMT, the CD Projekt-owned digital storefront is changing its name to simply GOG.com, and will start offering brand new indie games, as well as recent frontline titles from larger publisher's catalogs about one-to-three years after their debut.
The new approach kicks off this week with a site overhaul incorporating new social features and the addition of indie games Trine and The Whispered World to the GOG catalog. Other new indies on the way include Machinarium, Darwinia, and Spacechem. Like all games on the services, the new additions will be available for the same price worldwide, and will not include any manner of digital rights management.

:D :cryvaultboy: :touched:

Awesome.

As long as they continue to offer reasonably priced games with no DRM then I don't really care what they call themselves. :)

Gog is Welsh slang for people from north Wales. As a southerner this displeases me.

Indeed. And as long as they keep offering classic games that are compatible with modern systems, I'm perfectly happy.

I'm looking forward to the bigger indie focus. There are a lot of titles I've wanted to get but didn't because of Steam. Hopefully they get Amanita on board, soon, too. And Quest for Glory, Lucas games, System Shock, etc. :)

Ahh, I thought it was always GoG.com?

By that, nothing changes for me I guess.

Oh it's always been gog.com, they just stopped using the name "Good Old Games".

They've also started offering new indie games and other titles.

Yup.
And not surprising. Everyone calls them GoG already. Kind of like how Federal Express went with FedEx, since everyone used that to refer to the company anyhow. Brand name recognition...go with what the customers want/know. heh

Great titles on the front page...

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/03/27/good-old-games-gone-relaunches-as-gog-com/
... the crucial thing, I think, is that they’re sticking by their previous mantra of no regional pricing, and no DRM. And in that light, the move is really interesting. Carrying more recently released games, but insisting that they sell nothing loaded with DRM, will be something to watch.
Also worth noting is the apparent addition of a new pricing level, with The Whispered World going for $14.99. At two years old, it’s slightly disappointing to see the game not dropping to $9.99 (although it currently costs $19.99/£14.99 on Steam). The new site has a bunch of new features, and the new downloader will apparently be faster, as well as download new extras and patches, and even alert you to PMs and forum replies.
Quite how many new games will be willing to launch via their service, unable to fiddle with regional pricing to gouge the Europeans/Australians etc, as is the wont of our lovely industry, will be interesting to note. The current plan is to wait a while after the initial release before selling more mainstream games, perhaps a year later, at a point where publishers may be happier to see the DRM gone. But this of course gives more sensibly-minded pubs the opportunity to avoid the web of Steam/Origin’s intrinsic DRM. Interesting stuff.

Yes, it's exciting stuff. The past few years I've lived somewhere where price gouging just isn't possible, so that's not really a draw for me. DRM-less-ness is certainly attractive, though.

Steam needs more competition, so this is good. A DRM free alternative that doesn't screw you over with regional pricing. I can see it being rather popular for Europeans and even more so for Australians.

Plus all the extra stuff they tend to give you without charging extra (soundtracks, manuals, wallpapers, artwork) is also very nice.

I am rather curious how many publishers will put their new games on GoG though, a lot seem to be very stubborn when it comes to DRM. Don't expect Ubisoft titles.

It'll probably be a lot of indie games.

In a perfect world I'd have already dropped a ton of money on GoG's classics, but I just haven't been able to buy anything unless it's on Steam. I just like everything in one place. :P

While I probably won't buy any of their new games, one of these days I'm going to play through half their old library.
