It doesn't matter what race you pick, so pick whatever.

Dunmer or perhaps Khajiit, but the latter is a little cliche in that arch-type. =p I will offer one piece of advice. Don't let your playstyle get in the way of the race you wish to play. Just roleplay along with your disadvantages, much more fin that way. =p

There are no disadvantages however, so race selection doesn't matter. Be who you want to be.

I went with Imperial. I knew people who could talk aggressive people down when he stole or started something, so why not Imperial? Voice of the Emperor helps with that. Also, Imperials can find more gold. Thieves love gold. A master thief can smell the gold!

There are no disadvantages however, so race selection doesn't matter. Be who you want to be.

It still depends on what racial ability you want. Highborn is pretty darn useless if you never use magicka.

Highborn doesn't have any affect on how well you Sneak thus it's not a disadvantage. A High Elf can get their Sneak up to 100 and equip boots with Muffle just like every other race can.

Dunmer: intrigue, decent all around.
Kajiit: Thief/Warrior
Argonian: Mage/Assassin. Shadowscales are bound to the Dark Brotherhood, but I wouldn't think of them as "thieves" per say.
Redguard: light infantry, pirates

I'd pick a Kajiit over Argonian anyday if I were playing as a thief.

If you want thief then choose Khajiit because they are more known as thieves. Argonians are better known as assassins.

Race really doesn't matter much in this game, any race can be as good a thief as the next,so pick your race depending on what you think looks best or you just generally like best.

That said I'm a Bosmer pure stealth,archer with alchemy as back up.No magick,no one-handed or two-handed weapons.
Lockpick, pickpocket, speech and a little bit of lightarmor as secondary skills.

If I were goin to mix magick with stealth I would most likely be an Argonian, simply because I can imagine them useing some magick and still be a pure stealth thief like character.

To be a thief you do not need a specific race.

What you require is a reason to steal.

Pick the race you like the most and decide what is prompting your character to steal.

Wow this is the 100th thread I've seen like this, people always thinking race will effect their playstyle. Just choose which race you desire most, the only difference is a small boost to certain skills.

Race should have some effect other than just getting a +5 to Heavy Armor skill.

Do you honestly feel the need to complain about everything on every thread? If you really hate Skyrim so much, then why do you play it and post on the forums? Seems counter-productive to me.

Anywho, I'd go Argonian or Khajiit for the sneak bonuses. The Argonian racial ability (Waterbreathing) will prove helpful for a thief. My thief was an Imperial, though.

Again, you don't have to like, love or drool over something to talk shop. And why do you have to divert the conversation off topic to something personal? I don't ever make comments about how much people gush over the game, yet people seem to be very good at commenting on those who disagree with them.

The point was that your racial choice doesn't matter thus the original poster doesn't have to worry about what race to choose.

Dunmer, Khajiit, or Argonian.

With the mage element, I'd definitely go Dunmer.

There are statistical reasons for this (which hardly matter), but I'm coming at it mostly from a lore standpoint. RP-wise, Dunmer is where it's at for what you're wanting to do IMHO. Khajiit is the pure thief archetype, and Argonian is a great fit for an assassin-type character. Of course, you can do whatever the hell you want and create your own reasons (if necessary) for doing it that way.

There are thieves in all cultures.

As others have mentioned, coming up with a good backstory will be helpful. Try to consider why and how your character became a thief.

True enough. Although can't that be said for the past games? Can't an Orc be just as good of a mage as an Altmer or Breton? Orcs don't suffer from being a mage, Altmer only have a starting bonus of magicka.

Any race is perfectly fine, Unless you want Night eye, since that can't really be attained by anyone else than Khajiit :|
(Unless you count that spell "Vision of the Tenth Eye", but that takes forever to cast)

Never said Orcs should suffer from being a Mage. But I believe that in Oblivion a High Elf was always much better at being a Mage than any other race because they could have far more Magicka. While in Skyrim they get 50 extra that doesn't touch how much they got in Oblivion. Just because it has been done in the past doesn't mean it should continue in the present and future. Races should have something that can clearly identify them with the archetype they are designed to be best at.

Probably Imperial. It really doesn't matter what race you play as in the end skill wise, but the Imperial Luck skill would still add 10-15 more gold than you would have found if you played as any other race. Gold = Thief fuel

Why?

So that my Orc Warrior feels different than my High Elf Warrior.

As someone has said before, I have the ability to do anything I want, like pick up a guitar. Just because I can pick up a guitar and learn to play it doesn't mean I am going to be Hendrix. If everyone could be Hendrix then being Hendrix wouldn't mean anything. The fact that I can make a High Elf Warrior be as good as, and play pretty much identical to, an Orc Warrior, means there's nothing special about being an Orc Warrior or a High Elf Warrior.
