Great Video Game Soundtracks

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 11:23 am

A game with a great soundtrack always enhances the gaming experience, and is capable of reflecting the emotions and setting of the game. A great soundtrack makes for great memorable moments.

The soundtrack of games have always been important to me. I love music and whenever I play a game that has great music it always makes me extremely happy. A soundtrack that is able to reflect the atmosphere (be it sad or total badass-ness) is very important to me, and I know that lots of you feel the same way.

So what are some video game soundtracks that you've enjoyed? Music that will give you instant nostalgia and great memories when you hear them. The soundtracks don't have to be universally recognised as awesome, the important thing is that they are/were awesome to you. I'm mostly looking for games with music composed for it, but if you enjoyed a game with a soundtrack compilation of music from different artists/bands that is okay aswell.

Some great and memorable soundtracks I enjoyed are:

- Goldeneye 007. I remember playing this game as a kid, and whenever I hear a song from the game it makes me happy. The game had some awesome music in it in my opinion.
- The Monkey Island series. I don't know how many of you that have played it, but the music composed for it is amazing. The remastered soundtracks from the SE edition brings even more awesomeness to the music-pieces.
- The music of Zelda Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask. I still listen to some of the songs occasionally, and they give me shivers. Koji Kondo is a genius, and the songs he made for these two games will stick with me for the rest of my life. He was resonsible for alot of the songs I heard as a kid when gaming. His songs from the Mario related games are awesome aswell.
- Mario Kart games. Their soundtracks are usually great.
- Gears of War (all of them). I really enjoyed the instrumentals in these games, very good pieces that really set the atmosphere for the game.
- Skyrim. Jeremy Soule is a genius and he made amazing ambient music and other fitting music for the game.
- Pokemon. I will never forget the songs from the Gameboy, and the anime versions of the songs are great aswell.
- Street Fighter. I love the themes designed for all of the characters, they are awesome.
- Red Dead Redemption. Incredible atmospheric and emotional music.

I know I'm probably forgetting alot of games (which I always do when I make lists like these), but these are atleast some of the games that have soundtracks I found amazing.

Now I'm curious to hear about which soundtracks you guys enjoy/enjoyed!

Final Fantasy 6 (GBA) has in my opinion the best soundtrack ever made, with the most diverse collection of songs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobuo_Uematsu is a genius.

I'm personally a fan of the Red Dead Redemption OST. I love how it all fits so perfectly together when it shouldnt.
I also love the L.A. Noire and Fallout 3 sountracks. They really introduced me into swing music which is now one of my prefered genres.
The Brütal Legend sountrack was pretty good too mind :P
But overall, TES sountracks are my favorite. Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim all have completely different styles, but are all perfect.

Damn right :P
Can't say I was fond of Skyrims music.

Halo soundtrack is amazing.
Final Fantasy XIII has some good songs - Leona Lewis' "My Hands" was probably the most fitting song for that game.

Ermm, can't really think of anymore.

Surprisingly, I've found the Final Fantasy XIII-2 soundtrack to be absolutely marvelous. It has such a perfect blend of electronic and symphonic styles, I fell in love instantly. I haven't even played the game yet, which is even more impressive.

Despite my dislike towards the Halo series, I quite like the soundtracks for them.

Nothing else really comes to mind, but there's others..
