I picked the mage stone. Too many mage skills to level without it in a quick amount of time. Once i get my skills to a higher level I'll switch but not quite sure which one yet.

My current character went from mage stone, to lover's stone, and now uses the lord stone.

I start with the warrior/thief/mage stone as appropriate to my planned character, then go and grab the Steed stone around lvl 10 or so. Love the extra carrying capacity and having armor weigh nothing.

For any characters not focused on magic, Atronach is the best stone.

The Lord Stone, its pretty hax. I barely take any damage now from magic and melee. I remember Dragons Breath attacks would almost surely kill me,now I can just run into them and not worry.

Edit: Infact, using the Lord Stone made the game so easy, that I was forced to higher the difficulty.

Same here for my mage characters. It's hard enough increasing Magic skills as it is ... that little extra boost is nice. I think I've used the Lady Stone and Lover Stone both for a short while ... but must have used the Mage Stone 90 -95% of the time.

My melee characters will use Warrior Stone untill around level 20ish, then I do the Pieces of the Past quest cuz the final location is right near the Lord Stone, which is what I then swap to.
My theif/assassin used Thief Stone untill Sneak was level 70, then took Shadow Stone. Very useful if something gets FUBAR.

Atronach on my warrior and on my mage. I would also like to try the Apprentice at some point.

Always warrior, because I`m a warrior. I still don`t like the way it`s a dumb stone in the middle of nowhere. I found another one really far away north of Winterhold which was really isolated- I think it was for Archers. First time I made a mistake and picked some mage thing, but didn`t know what to do.

The thing is this is supposed to be like your Birth Sign at the start of the game, but you have to wander around and hopefully find the stone of your choice- Which might be never if you`re unlucky.

So what `birth sign` was I before for the past 20 years or so - a Nothing?

It`s just stupid. I don`t like things that are stupid.

You can't be THAT unlucky. As for the Nordic implementation of what Imperials and Dark Elves use as birth signs, I'd say it's a rather clever way to make the constellation bonuses actually flexible.

Lover stone. Can't argue with 15% faster learning of all skills.

Steed Stone's awesome for me. I actually forego a shield or any other off-hand just to get as much carrying capacity as is possible, so +100 to that is awesome. And Sheogorath knows I need it, as I'm always swimming in loot, especially dragon bones.
